Has anyone managed to book it? It's not active yet after a quick look on random dates at their website.

    • I can't tell if the prices I'm seeing is already supposed to reflect that offer or not from my attempts.

    • Nope - tried a few times and it seems like their website is broken:

      Access Denied
You don't have permission to access "http://booking.airasia.com/Compact.aspx" on this server.

      Reference #18.cecd…

      • Password is Llubillug

      • I had to switch to IE to stop that coming up.

    • I booked fine.

  • price is doubled when selecting 2 people, not working for me PER-KUL-PVG return March '14

  • Working for me - I found some flights in late Jan & Feb from Melbourne to KL for 224.5 per person (when selecting 2 ppl).

    • +1

not working for sydney to Kl in the same period :(

  • What Brisbane is not considered a major city, but Perth is?

    • +7

      yup

      • fix our god damn train system you oaf!

  • +8

Meh… What can I say: I person pays $269, 2 pay $224 each (PER-KUL, next year). Slight discount but usual sales are better than that.

It certainly is not buy 1 fly 2.

False advertising, so I have to neg it.

    • +1

Wait for their big annual sale that comes up every Jan/Feb.

Prices are at least another 15-20% cheaper.

    • +1

Have a look at the breakdown. You'll find a lot of that is taxes. The discountis never on taxes and charges. So if they do a 50% off sale, it'll only apply to the non-taxes bit.

I looked at Sydney - Sg on 19 April and it was about $368pp when searching for1 person and $273pp when searching 2 people.

Of the $547 total $354 are airport charges and taxes.

      So the non-tax component is $191 (booking with 1 person)vs $193 for 2.

      • +1

For the flights I looked at the 1 person price is $128 + $141 in "taxes". 2 people each pay $83.50 + $141 in "taxes". Doing a 2 for 1 excluding taxes that should have been $64 + $141.

Also, just like on Qantas, "taxes and fees" is merely a euphemism to hide the fact that the airlines add their own surcharges. The actual amount of external costs that is imposed on them by the airport and government is less than half that amount.

        • Actually at $141 in taxes is pretty fair. Although not all of it is actual taxes from Governments but it's not less than half on D7.
Considering the passenger movement tax for Australia (AU) is $55, the Australian Safety & Security Surcharge (WG) is $6.17 and the Australian Int'l Passenger Service Charge is $15.27 for a one way PER-KUL on MH for a total of $76.44. I couldn't find D7 specifically so couldn't say exactly what D7's surcharges are but the Government taxes should be similar if not the same.

        • Also the airport charges fees and charges for the airlines too. They aren't a charity letting them use the facilities for free.

        • +1

Trance N Dance has listed everything that applies on a per passenger basis. Jet* shows the same total of $76.44.

So the fuel surcharge is "only" $64.56 in this case, bringing the total to $141. Lower than some other airlines, but still dishonest, especially when it is called "taxes and fees" suggesting something external.

Fuel is a normal cost of operating their business, it has been relatively expensive for years now and could long have been incorporated into the base fare. Just imagine next time you jump on a public bus the driver tells you that in addition to the ticket you need to pay a surcharge because diesel prices went up…

        • Trance only listed the taxes not the airport fees. It seems Perth airport charges about $9 per tonne of the MTOW as well. No idea what that works out to be per ticket though.

This information isn't very available on the internet unfortunately.

        • AFAIK airport fees are absorbed by the airlines and regained by "inclusion" in the fare component of the ticket. Considering there is no way to work out how much each passenger should pay towards airport "parking fees" considering not all flights will carry the same number of passengers.

When working out the components of a ticket the fee the airlines pay to the airport is not a separate component unlike government taxes and fuel surcharges.

agree + should compare to Scoot too…

      • It does. My last $1 scoot flights cost me $260 return.

  • Doesnt work for me either :(

  • you can only find the deal is applicable only to fares marked under the 'promo' column and by selected 2 adults

    • actually i take that back. it worked this morning, doesn't work now. seems like it's a hit and miss. horrible system and customer service/support

  • It says "Buy1 Fly2 promotion is applicable for D7 flights only"

    What's a D7 flight?

    • +3

      D7 is Air Asia X. Like a G6

      • +1

        What's a G6? :P

        • +7

Something that gets you slizzard apparently.

        • This should explain what its all about.

        • something that gets you flying very high

  • +1

This deal isn't good, can get the same flights for rough the same cost when you book for one person!

  • Yeah, I gotta chime in and say I don't really see the bargain here.
AirAsia has regular sales and at prices better than this.

  • Not a deal. Usual price.

  • I think sometimes OzBargainers are a tad too harsh. Looking at this flight, it seems like a good deal.

    SYD-KUL (16 Jul) - DJ223/DJ221
    1 person = $162 (fare price) + $157 (taxes)
    2 people = $67.50 (fare price) + $157 (taxes) per person

The fare price is actually cheaper than Buy 1 Fly 2.

Let's be realistic, they can't give a discount on the taxes. Also, if it doesn't appear in the dates you want; it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

    • +1

If only it was taxes. The "passenger movement charge" (formerly called "departure tax") is $55. That is the only tax that applies, there is no GST on international flights. I would still show some understanding if they only add the variable airport fees they have to pay per passenger, somewhere between $10 and $20 depending on departure airport.

Fuel surcharges, making up the majority of the $157, are simply a fraud. I am surprised airlines are allowed to get away with it, but the ACCC obviously has no teeth when it comes to that.

      • The accc is more interested in taking away fuel discounts than closing down fuel surcharges, that rod Simms guy has his head screwed on the wrong way.

  • Never been able to claim a bargain fair from AirAsia… Every time that I get an offer for a 2 for 1 flight, it shows me the routes, then i click to look at it, then I select my departing location and destination, and it brings back full price fares for the route, and doesn't give any inclination of what dates are actually on sale, or better yet automatically generate with those dates to begin with.

$449 is not exactly cheap deal for AA. They usually have $199 pp during promo…i think i'll wait it out..

    • You might want to change the abbreviation/code you used for Air Asia as AA is American Airlines :P

      (Air Asia X is D7)

  • +1

Sadly this is just garbage false advertising on top of not even being a bargain or good deal.

I'd still like to say thanks to the thread OP for putting up the deal none the less. It looked OK at first glance to me, too. Devil was just hidden in the details.

  • about usual prices if buying well in advance…

  • This was definitely a deal for me. Not sure what all the guys with the negs were exactly having problems with (probably looked at too narrow a range of dates).
Tried booking for end of Jan SYD-KUL which was $389 one way (without baggage/food), but was $224.50 one way each when searching for a booking under 2 adults. Not sure about you guys, but a $164.50 saving is definitely a bargain for me (especially considering I intended to fly with a companion anyway).

    Neat trick:
Instead of buying a return ticket where the return leg would cost me $261 per person, book two one-ways. The return leg was displayed as 549RM per person (approx. $187 AUD) and pay with 28 degrees. I've found this method work quite well with other destinations too. Sometimes the difference is minute but was definitely worth it here.

    Pros:

    • able to book travel insurance one way
    • able to pay with 2 different credit cards
    • (specific to this deal) I was not required to book the return leg for two people - meaning we could fly separate return legs

    Cons:

    • booking is split - your booking will not be recognised as one whole booking (can't think of reasons why this is a con but quite sure it is)
    • unable to pay with PayPal both ways (PayPal was available for outbound - $0 fee. 16RM fee for ex KUL)
