Whoa! DDR3-1066 RAM? You'd almost double the cost trying to populate it.

  • Hmmm I have been wanting something like this - a low-powered web browser capable of consuming 1080p movies as well.
Really I want all the features of a decent laptop but without the screen/battery
Are there more obvious choices with this type of PC?

  • +1
    • + $34.96 shipping to Australia. Cheaper if you are willing to wait a few more days.

Also, this computer takes a 2.5" HD, so not possible to recycle those spare 3.5" HDs you may have salvaged from desktops.

  • Would this be powerful enough as a mame box?
Also can I install windows 8?

    • You would really struggle to use it as a game box, I can't see why it wont run Windows 8 though

      • +1

A mame box should be OK, but i would do a linux based install and not windows.

    • +1

Wouldn't take much to run many MAME games I remember doing it on an AMD64 ages ago and I could run most games on that. Might want to throw in a X-arcade stick on it :)

  • What about the operating system? Have to buy that as well?

    • +1

Yes - you could go Ubuntu for free though.
Maybe call Microsoft and transfer over the OS of an old laptop if you have one- should be good with XP/7.
Not sure how big a PITA the drivers would be.

    • +2

Just run XBMC. Best HTPC software IMO and it's free!

  • Interesting - specs list DIMM memory sockets while the description & pics show SODIMM.

    wow, superb deal!,
my old Revo R3600 was the single core 1.6Ghz atom and that played anything i threw at it, including a fair chunk of MAME and N64 emulators, 45 gig blu-ray too!
This, just chuck openelec on it….you're laughing!
it'll run windows 8 a treat too, make sure 4 gig of ram though if you do windows

I'm sorely tempted, and I only bought my N40L last year ;-)

  • Muggins here: can you please explain this for me?

"2 x USB 3.0 ports powered by Renesas (NEC) chip (optional)"

Does that mean you have to add that chip to get USB 3.0 ports? How much does that cost?

    see there for spec

looks like it has 4 USB2.0 ports and 2 other USB3 (blue colour) ports to the side!

    • It is the word "optional" that is throwing me.

      • It means 2 sockets are on the mobo and more ports can be had by connecting cables to the mobo header pins.

Can anyone in the know please chime in with the obvious competitors for this?

Want a reliable "nettop" computer (basically a decent laptop but without the screen/battery), just no idea about good/bad/ugly in this field.

  • would this do DTS/Dolby 5.1 via HDMI out?

  • 1 x CPU fan header
    1 x System fan header

    What does that mean?

    • Aha socket that you plug fans into

I strongly recommend you guys to wait for another month before ordering any Intel NUC or any x86 mini PCs. The reason being a new Ivy Bridge Celeron 1037U is being produced and you will see it in mini PCs soon enough. It almost doubles the performance from a Celeron 847 and runs circles around any ATOM to date. This CPU is getting very popular in China (You can find a lot of Mini PCs / Motherboards with this CPU on Taobao, AliExpress etc). The price is almost the same as the current Celeron/ATOM lineup. I suspect this is Intel's big gun against AMD Temash, well at least before Silvermont emerges.

Here are some links you might be interested:

    • What I would like is a mini pc with one of them new fangled 1037Us, 64gb ssd, at least 2 USB 3.0 ports, no HD and no OS. And a fan!

I've bought a smartphone and a tablet direct from China no problems but they are mostly battery powered except when charging. Can you do that with a pc?

    • Thanks pal, excellent info.

    • These boxes are simple, they have a motherboard with a BGA CPU (1037U in this case) and 2 DDR3 SODIMM slots, PCI-E (full size, half size) and a SATA connector. Different OEM manufacturers will come up with different sizes of Chassis. mSATA SSDs can always fit but not the 2.5"/3.5" drives. On Taobao you can always negotiate with sellers to exclude certain components for a cheaper price (not sure about AliExpress).

It wouldn't be hard to find a seller which offer a barebone only. It's still sort of the infancy stage for this CPU but a month or two from now these Celeron boxes will get a massive volume boost and more choices will be offered.

Chinese electronics tend to last longer in a low humidity environment despite their lower quality. However, if you plan to leave these computers on 24/7 I would wait for a bigger brand like MSI, Acer or Asus.

      • Right because with electronics, cheaping out on ANY component can be the death of it.
Its hard to buy non major-branded stuff because quite often the fan, power supply or capacitors can be the "gotcha" that brings the whole system down, despite apparently "good" branded motherboards and other components.
Obviously a major brand with a rep to protect are much more likely to have decent quality across the whole device.

  • I'm interested in this one as I already have memory & HD to suit. However, default express shipping is boosting the cost (USD 113.69+ USD 35.28 = USD 148.97) which converts to A$165.
    What have I missed?

    • Not much by the looks of it.

Similar parts can be sourced locally for about the same price.

  • ok there's ONE big problem with these

    they run the gma3600/3650

there is only very bad Win7 x86 support

there's no Win8 nor any Ubuntu

I have an Atom motherboard and i use it as a nas so i dont care but I bought it knowing it will never run any Windows o/s well (it might run XP ok)

  • Is there a small unit like this one which will let me install a slim 12.7mm blu-ray Combo drive?
