Bauhn Dual Hard Drive Docking Station $29.99 (Aldi)

660

Looks like a good deal to me.

According to staticice, Gamedude has a slightly cheaper dock at $29 but is USB 2.0:

    Looks like a toaster.

      Yeah toasts hard drives :-)

  • They always come handy when you need to check a drive. I love them and for sure will go for it.

  • Supports 2.5"

    So it supports SSD?

    • SSDs work great. Got one of these over a year ago when ALDI sold them last, and I reckon I turn it on to get access other external storage at least 3-4 times a week, and never had any issues. Great transfer speeds as well. Never used the one touch clone button, though, so cannot comment on that.

      • wouldnt clone a bootable drive with windows

        • It would.

        • Limited to 1 partition per disk?

  • Can it copy HD to HD without PC?

    • Picture says one touch clone function, so it should.

      • -1

Can it copy hard disk with bad sectors and ignore bad sectors?

        • +1

Try it for yourself - 60 day return policy.

      • some brand dual docks will say (not on the box and only in the enclosed booklet!) that they can't do (one touch)cloning to another hdd of the exact same capacity.
But try anyway … my jaycar came with that chilling proviso, so i tested the function many times, and found all clones are flawless, regardless.

    • I bought one years ago but couldn't get the cloning feature to work on a ssd. Otherwise it still works ok.

      • me too was yours ritmo by any chance?

  • +1

I got one of these ages ago - Its sweet kit.

    • This exact one?

      Did you have this problem?

I'm a bit uncertain of any review where the reviewer does not know their measurements.

<quote>3.5″ laptop drives to 5.25″ full desktop drives </quote>

Whilst I have used 5.25" hard drives, that was about 20 years ago, they were 20MB, and used ESDI, RLE or MFM interfaces, not even IDE let alone SATA. I can't say I ever saw a 3.5" laptop specific drive.

Someone should point out that he probably means 3.5" and 2.5". Either that, or it explains his problem.

      • I had that problem. I bought mine the last time this was sold. The connector was too close to the left wall of the slot so my Crucial SSD and Samsung 2.5" HDD won't go in. I think I didn't have any trouble with 3.5" HDDs.

        • I've got that problem. I might just pull a couple of cables out of my computer and use them as an "Extension cord" between the drive and the dock.. works in my head..

      • I just bought one and had the same problem. No matter how I tried my 3.5" would not fit.

Also, once you pushed the clone button, it got stuck, you had to force it back out.

I think the plastic molding is the culprit in both.

I have now returned it to Aldi.

      • I am using two 5.25" hard drives in it at the moment.
I can recall that the first time trying to insert the drives took quite a while.
        Now they just slip in.

  • Dangit… OzB is gonna make me spend more moneyz. This is pre-zackly what I need to mount a couple of crusty old 3.5"-ers (as the actress said to the bishop).

Will report stock level at Aldi in BuddyFranklin St Melb when I pick mine up at 8:32 a.m. on Wednesday (they open at 8:30, but it'll take me a couple of minutes to get in, get the kit, and get to the checkout).

    • +1

That's not good enough. You should be able to get to the checkout by 8.31am.

      • It's now 10:42am… and no mention of stock, surely "Diogenes" couldn't still stuck in the checkout.

        • Don't only read the numbers, notice the DAYs. Diogenes won't be lining up yet until Wednesday.

        • Phew!! Thought it was Wednesday today.. Nearly wasted my lunch break going to Aldi. Better I wait til tomorrow.

    Compliant with USB 3.0

I wouldn't be expecting USB3.0 speeds with that wording..

    • +3

      but it does say…

      Up to 5Gbps Transfer Rate

  • +1

I bought one of these over a year ago from Aldi and it worked great, full USB 3.0 transfer speeds and everything.

Unfortunately it died about 14 months in (out of warranty) and I was lucky enough to find stock of the model they released then.

    New one works a treat.

Much cheaper than equivalent models on ebay/staticice - worth checking out with the 60 day return policy.

    • +1

Sorry to hear that. Any chance you paid by credit card and forgot that your credit card has extended warranty cover? (and paid the 0.5% credit card surcharge)

      • Have you read the credit card terms and conditions?

        • No, I haven't on this. A friend of mine has claimed something before though.

  • +1

Anyone know if it can handle drives >2TB, >3TB or more ?

    • Box states up to 4TB

  • I have two hard drives in a PC that recently died… would this be the simplest /cheapest way to get the data off them?

    • Sure would. As long as the reason your PC died is not due to a corrupt/failed hard drive! You'll also need to be able to navigate the folders to find your data….

    • Depends a bit why they are dead. If the drives are dead putting them in a dock won't magically revive them. If it's the PC that has problems e.g. the SATA controller has dies then yeah sure.

These docks aren't normally used like that unless the PC is dead. If it's still running then you should be able to get the data off using it alone.

  • Jaycar has USB 3.0 drive Docks that hold 2.5 or 3.5 External HDD for similar prices.

    • At Jaycar dual station costs $50 and single around $40, but fair enough at least they might have some stock.

  • +1

I've had 3 and 4 TB GPT drives in mine from last time without trouble.

    • Thanks, this is what I wanted to hear. Gonna pick this one up.

  • I use this one Astone DOC-150E DOC-150E.USB3/E-SATA 2.5"&3.5"SATA HDD docking station cost $29 never had any problems.

    • The Astone one looks like it's only single bay though.

  • what about DX equivalents of these dual docking bays?

  • I've had a Vantec single bay unit for years…. These docks are great… Mine even has eSATA (pre USB3.0 era hardware) but a dual bay unit would be even more useful.

    • Have a vantec as well which i use for my offline backups. Quality product and my model was only one of few supporting USB3.0 and eSATA

I got this from Umart ages ago. Essentially same thing, same price. Always has been…

    • +2

      Single drive only
USB 2.0 although possibly this isn't really USB 3.0
      Limited to <=2TB drives

      Not the "same" at all.

  • I have 3 different hard driver dock. Bought it last year from Aldi. This is the best one.
USB 3.0 and 2 hard driver. The only thing I dont like is the power adapter. But still worthy buying.

  • hmm…very tempting to buy one..but wondering if i could get one after 11th from Aldi? as their website that product will be ready from 11th sept?

  • Guys anyone know about the reliability of this brand?

I was about to buy a Vantec one for about $60 because I trust it but if this one is 100% and half the price. So should I get it?

    • No worries with ALDI's 60 days return policy.

      • Does this apply to all products? If so go ALDI!

        • I think everything except food….

        • Heh good call. Imagine people taking back a ball of green fuzz claiming their banana is faulty…

  • Gr8 Dock I had one from last time and will be getting a couple more :)

I brought another one which died just returned it and got another one so all good… they have a gr8 return policy thumbs up

    • Out of curiosity how often does Aldi do this HDD dock deal?

  • Got one. Heaps at Mudgeeraba QLD.

  • Got 1 at carindale store. There looked to be about 6 sold in the 10 minutes or so I was at the store.

  • Got one in Burwood VIC, there were 2 others getting it while I was there

    • +2

Did you attempt contact with them using the super secret Ozbargain 'bargain hunters 4 life' handshake?

  • Picked one up, just chucked in two 3.5 drives and its working great (Apart from one of my drives has a clicking noise so it might just be kaput…)

  • It's allowed me to retrieve data from a few of my HDDs … but three are (as I thought) 'dead, all dead' - and one's an IDE, so I'll have to dig out my old Jaycar cables and stuff…

  • Just tried to put an old drive from my laptop in. Doesn't physically fit! The plug is about 3mm to close to the left.. Damn!

    • The laptop drive should fit. Are you sure there isn't a metal shield or similar that is making the drive wider than standard?

      • 100% sure. The only thing these had on them was an "adapter" thingy but that came off a long time ago.. fits in another external case!

    • +1

Had the same problem. Found that I had to visually line up the pins on an slight angle away from the side, the tilt it in place. This will scrape the side of the dock.

Looks like a design fault where they have not allowed enough space.

Also try putting the drive in the other dock as on mine the pins on one is further away from the side than the other.

  • picked one up. They were behind the counter. It works very well, I've got two laptop drives in it. Speeds are great! Looks very sleek.

Only problem I noticed was that if one drive is defective, both of them won't mount. Odd.

    • I noticed that despite it claiming "hot plugging", it didn't really work. I had a transfer going from one drive in the dock, then plugged in a second drive and it disconnected the first one for a tick. Other than that seems great. Oh, mine had smears of some clear oily stuff on it when I took it out of it's packaging, don't know what that was all about.

  • Perfect. Just went and picked one up. Works great.

  • Just trying the cloning function, the manual said LEDs 1-2-3-4-3-1 light up alternately when cloning is in progress but didn't work for me.

How long I need to press and hold the one-touch cone button before it will start?

    UPDATE:

Found that when the 1-2-3-4 start flashing I have to release the button and it will start cloning.

BTW also tried put in a hard disk with bad sectors but I think didn't work the LEDs 1-2-3-4-3-1 will not light up alternately. I think the dock detected errors and stopped.

  • This is going to sound dumb, but is this product apple-mac friendly? I'm new to SATA docking. Help a newbie out please?
