  • Kogan Mobile has collapsed leaving it's customers to find another network.

    http://delimiter.com.au/2013/09/09/ispone-sold-without-kogan…

    • Telstra pulled their plug for them.

  • +1

Thanks ruraro. I've been waiting to find one of these around this price again. Hubby got one last time to replace his work-supplied phone that was a piece of junk. It's fairly straightforward and works the way it's supposed to without any headaches, so will be perfect for the person I have in mind.

  • Perfect phone for my cheapskate dad. The only thing he needs is to check the cricket scores(apart from calling and texting ofcourse)

    • +2

i wish my kids wouldnt post here. :P

bought one earlier this year, moved from 3/voda to aldi and havent looked back.

between the wifes S2 (from a friend), this huawei and the daughters telstra smartphone 2 ($9 in the target selloff 6 months ago) all on aldi sims we are doing it cheap.

  • Perfect for Kogan Mobile

  • I have been asking around the mobile phone kiosks in shopping centres for a case/cover for this phone and no one seems to have them. Anyone know where I can order a flip case (to protect the screen) online ?

    • +1

don't bother for that price, unless you have really a "rough guy"….Just get it replace if the screen or phone get badly scratched

    • I gave up looking for cases for my LG L3 phone and others, & just bought x3 soft cases for next to nothing ($7 for x3) which do the job well.

    • I got two from ebay…
Just search ebay.com.au for Huawei y201.
If you do not find anything suitable then search for Huawei Y200 (one model down)… specs are very similar and there are many more cases available.

    • A basic ebay search for "Huawei Y201 cover" comes up with multiple results. Sort them by "Price and postage: Lowest first" and pick your poison.

    • I bought one at ebay http://goo.gl/HVGdyQ
      anywhere from $2-5.
I got the one with the android eating the ice cream!!

  • Very good phone for the price, the Cutom JB ROM works great and makes the phone more smoother.

    • Is there a ROM in particular that you found good ?

      • I'm using this - and very happy with it

      • +1

Here is the Jelly Bean ROM for Huawei Y201 - http://www.myhuawei.net/Thread-ROM-4-2-2-CyanogenMod-10-1-U8… (in German)It's working perfectly on my backup phone.

BTW, FlyBuys hasn't credited 25,000 points so far (I have bought the phone in April this year)

        • 25,000 points!? :P

I have already received mine bonus 2500 points, you should contact Flybuys customer Service - you might have to provide them your Teltra number (from the sim you activated)

        • +1

          Thanks Bappy.

        • -1

25,000 points worth 125 flybuy dollars, it was REAL bargain. LOL.

Y300 is now $99 at telstra shop.

    • That's been RRP in some stores like Dick Smith

  • It's baaaack!

  • This deal doesn't show up in the SA catalogue. I'm going to check it out it still because I missed out on the last two offers and really need a cheap phone!

    • It isn't in the WA Coles catalogue either.

      • It isn't in the WA Coles catalogue either.

Damn…was keen on getting one this time around too :(

        • Oh, its not available in WA???

  • Bought one few months ago. For some unknown reason, the internal screen was cracked. Does the warranty cover this?

    • there is a pamplet in the box which advises you about the warranty

  • In 6101 Victoria Park it is the samsung Galaxy Y for $59 with 750 flybuys and sim must be activated by 9th october.

What is this galaxy Y like?

  • +5

Just a word of warning about this phone - I bought one 6 months ago for $39 because it was so inexpensive and then never used it. The curse of the ozbargainer.

  • Awesome, will be getting one after work and use it as a 3g modem. Thanks OP

  • mmm so if i buy 8 phones i can take overseas and get 10% gst back nearly pays for unlocking code. Do they come with micro sd card.

    • certainly didnt previously

  • Thanks for sharing! Have to grab one tomorrow.

  • Someone please confirm if I can use the app called Skout on this phone?
I use iPhone 4 as modem for my laptop. I guess using Huawei as modem may be nearly as good?

    • Huawei as modem will be as good as iPhone 4. Tethering being a standard feature of the Ice Cream Sandwich Android OS.

  • what's a good cheap sim plan with a long expiry and a good amount of data (or data only)? I'm planning to get this as a backup phone and use it as a wifi hotspot in emergencies when my home internet crashes (which it seems to be doing more lately :/) and for internet while out and about. Any ideas?

    • A couple of months ago I would reckon Kogan (Telstra 3g, 6gb data, unlimited call cost you $29) but they have stopped this service.

It depends on how you define 'a good amount'. 2gb? 5gb? 10gb? I am using Vaya now and you may check out the BYO plan from Virgin.

      • Vaya seems pretty good thanks!

        • +1
        • thanks a million Bob19 - a real life saver
I think i will just stick to the Aldi mobile service
there was positive & negative feedback, but mainly negative

    • I've been a happy PennyTel customer for several years. $35/month for 5GB of data and unlimited calls/text in Australia.

    • Try amaysim

  • got 5 from april deal.

Bag man unlocked them for $5 each.

good spare phone for this price.

    • you need 5 spare phones?

      • +1

        Spare, spare's spare, spare's spare's spare, spare's spare's spare's spare and spare's spare's spare's spare's spare.

That's 32 (2^5) times securer to have a working smart phone.

      • yeah i might be running an illegal gambling syndicate. you never know.

    • You don't need to unlock the phone, if you can install the custom ROM on it, it will unlock by then after flashed the ROM .

I have installed Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean ROM on my Huawei Y201 - http://www.myhuawei.net/Thread-ROM-4-2-2-CyanogenMod-10-1-U8…

It's much faster than the Android 4.0.3 which is from the box.

      • Really? Mine is running slow recently, was thinking to get a better handset like the N4. But if reflashing speed it up a bit, my wife might be ok with it for a little longer.

        • +1

The original ROM actually it's made for Telstra, it has some of boltware on it and it will slow down the phone.

You need to root the phone first then flash the JB custom ROM. it would be much better than most of low end Android phone when Android 4.2.2 ROM is on it.

        • What is the phone won't put out?

      • Do I need to root and install CWM on the phone first to install this ROM.

        • Yes. Root it(hahahaha…..sigh) and then you can install the ROM.

      • is this able to be used for all mobile types to be unlocked ? eg: samsung, nokia etc.
        when using the below ?

    Thanks ruraro.
Can I use the app Skout on this phone?
I use Skout on iPhone 4 (App Store) and used it using Android Store.
    Someone please confirm?

  • I bought this one last time and it is a great phone for the price. Then I bought the Y300 for $99 and it is a great phone for the price . They are both Telstra blue tick. Last week I dropped my Y300 in the deep end of the swimming pool. I took out the battery and sim card and basically put it out in the sun in one of those "closet camels" for a few days and at this stage its working as normal.

  • If used for ALDI mobile, there are reports of the phone constantly checking for Telstra firmare updates, so a heads up for unwanted data charges.

    • settings will allow you to restrict it.

    • I had the same problem but I think it was checking Huawei web site for updates.
Must have accidentally been started whilst going through settings and it used up the whole $5 credit from Aldi before I realised.
I eventually found the app was running all the time and canned it and it's been right ever since.
I also found the screen to be more responsive to touch after I took off the protector.
It had air bubbles under it anyway.

  • Do I need to buy a telstra sim pack with this deal?

    • No - there's a Telstra SIM in the box

      • Mine had $10 credit on the sim talk n txt only

  • Waiting for them to have the Y300 on special.

  • no its included

  • -2

Has anyone used the app Skout, or if it can be used on this phone?

    • 3 times

  • -1

Where is it in Coles? I had a look where there phones were but all I saw was the Huawei y100.

    • Starts tomorrow.

      • Ah I see. I completely missed that. Thanks.

Can vouch for this phone. I got one 2 months ago when it was also this price (Cheers OzB!).
Can be a little laggy at times. Camera is only OK for Facebook & Instagram photos.
At this price you can't go wrong.

  • Has anyone used this phone and get wifi from another phone like iPhone 4 through tethering, and use the app Skout on Huawei, and doesn't lag too much?

  • My $0.02 worth…
Excellent value phone. Got mine at the last Coles sale, same price, unlocked it from Bag Man. Still running stock OS. Have used it with both Telstra and Optus here and on AT&T in the USA. Works great, strong reception (even in Amish country!) I tell people it is my $30 mobile phone ($39.50 minus call credit on the included SIM) and they do not believe me. I may root it and install later OS but no a big priority so far.
Camera is not great, but you do not buy a cheap phone for the camera!
Now, if Coles ever put a Huawei P1 on sale…

  • Just bought one from Coles, the one I got is locked, so have purchased a code from the Bagman. My Mum upgraded from a Nokia bar phone to one of these a few weeks back and is loving it. Time to upgrade my 75yo Dad now.

  • just bought 3 they are selling like hot cakes. Might root it later to get rid of telstra stuff.

  • What is the best way to jailbreak this phone and which software? I wanna use the app Skout on it, and hopefully doesn't lag too much.

  • Just scored one in WA from Coles in Warnbro :D

Wasn't in the catalogue, but scanned at $39.

Wasn't asked for Fly buys card or anything…happy days…cheers OP!

use this link to install cm10-1-on-y201 if you can not read German
    http://www.ctrlaltdefeated.us/2013/08/installing-cm10-1-on-y…

to root your phone, find the link below
    http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/huawei_ascend_y201_pro

Took me 2 hrs for the whole process to finish including trial and error but it's worth it.

    • Thanks for the English version of the CM10 install instructions!

      • You're welcome. Sim unlocked confirmed after installed the ROM.

      • Another link you may find it useful later down the track.
[FIX for HD CM10.1] "android.media.process has stopped" If you get this erros frequently after installing some apps from Playstore.

        http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40561225

    • Thanks, I tried the similar instruction mentioned above. I don't know what I have done but it freezes at the starting screen now. I can boot into the CMW mode but it doesn't help even I wiped everything. Any idea?

      • You said it freezes now right?. Try press Volume Up and Power Button at the same time for 5 seconds till you log into CMW mode.

        • Yeah, I entered the CMW mode and did a data/cache wipe. After reboot, it just freeze again. I did some research and it says I can do a hard reset or reload the firmware. But I couldn't find the stock rom anywhere.
Is there any simple way to just 'reset' it?

        • I didn't experience any freeze but I took out the battery every time when I do something wrong i.e. SD card not mount when install the ROM. Did you insert a SD card when booting up? My first SD card wasn't compatible with my phone so I replaced another one and the installation went smoothly afterward.

  • Can confirm this is available in SA despite not being in the catalogue, bought one today.
