If you have to buy one of these at least be smarter and spend $20 more for 5th gen.

No $199 @tgg, but price match ow for $189.05.

If have ING card save another 10 bucks, but same goes for gen 4.:-)

        • nice… :)

The 4th gen iPod touch doesn't support iOS 7, so this device is a dead end as far as major software updates goes. 5th gen also has double the RAM, a bigger screen, is ~13% lighter and has slightly better battery life. Only possible reason you might want the 4th gen is the 30-pin connector for use with older accessories (5th gen uses Lightning connector, which requires an adaptor for 30-pin accessories).

some audio enthusiasts prefer the 30pin as it allows an analogue line out which can be fed to an amp to be cleanly amplified :)

some will also argue that the newer gen ipod sounds great straight out of the headphone jack.

        • Yeah, Lightning is inferior in some ways to the old 30-pin connector. The 30-pin also supports 1080p video output, whereas Lightning only handles up to 1600x900. :)

Thoughtful discussion here. I will add my 2 cents :)

So while the 5th gen iPod does many greater things than the 4th gen, it doesn't have rear camera that can be handy at times. They are both retina display however due to size difference, 4th gen is a standard screen and 5th gen is a wide screen. Some apps will look nice with wide screen support while many of the apps will look better with 4th gen. This will be overturned in time as more developers are supporting the new wide screen aspect ratio.

5th gen 16gb iPod touch is a crippled version of 32gb/64gb and it also doesn't have the iPod loop, which is an extra accessory that holds the iPod around your hand by looping. As above, there are pros and cons about 4th and 5th. If you have 30 pin designed sound systems or docks, it is nice to just hook 4th gen iPod. If you don't have anything iPod related and don't need camera then 5th is a better choice.

One other thing is that 4th gen will only support upto iOS 6.1.3, which looks better in my opinion than the new iOS 7 look.

          Hope this helps :)

Could someone give me a recommendation for a non apple product, similar for a 12 year old girl as a present? Thanks!

    • A carrot?

    • kindle/kobo ebook reader

    • Right now, I am considering an Android phone with micro SD card for my son (minus a sim card). He is 11. Plenty of prepaid network locked 4 to 5 inch android phones (and if you are not making calls it doesn't matter) for under 200 and for as little as 100 plus a 32GB sd class 4 for about 25 delivered.

It's the way I am leaning.

      • Thanks guys, yes either a andrioid phone or kobo reader might be the way to go then, thanks!
