UMI S1 (MTK 6589 Quad Core, Dual Sim) $132 Delivered @ TT Malls (Limited Time Only)

130
2013

An excellent price for these specs: 5" screen, quad core, dual sim, 1280 x 720, Android 4.2.1, 1gb ram, 8gb rom, micro sd slot up to 32gb, dual camera, flash led etc

I was very tempted to purchase this phone, but prefer a smaller form factor. Although I haven't used them myself, Ttmalls appears to be a reputable Chinese store.

Note: best price I've seen elsewhere is @ $180 delivered

Edit:
1) a couple of clarifications: the price I posted of $132 ($131.99 to be precise) is what appears at PayPal checkout stage [low exchange rate cf. Forex]; USD 120 is the price showing on the ttmalls front page - http://www.ttmalls.com/ - better to go by this as PayPal processes the transaction in USD
2) the lithium battery issue may affect delivery time [?] - please see: http://www.ttmalls.com/index.php?main_page=news_article&arti…

  • for $5.10 more than the X1 then this is the way better deal.

battery could be a bit bigger (only 2020mAh)

  • any reviews on this phone? would be interested in this, especially if it's a clone of the HTC butterfly!

  • how reliable are these phones?

  • weird, it doesn't make any sense when i search for the phone it shows $211.16 but after i click it it shows $120. Hope it's not a price error.

    • The website is loading very slowly. I'm getting all sorts of errors with the pricing. I manged to get it to $115 AUD, but when paying the price goes to USD etc etc

It's a great price…but I think in this its too good to be true

      • indeed, it shows on their front page as a sales item which is going to be expired in 35 hours. My guess is they are over stocks items.

  • $120.00 US or $116.10 AUD, would be great if they had a forex operation.

  • Hmm, another weekend, another price error!
    Too good to be true?
    Maybe

Jump on the bandwagon, try to cover your butt on the payment method (difficult in this case) and buy

    Think later

  • Sub-Total : AU$116.10
    Discount Coupon: 2013 : -AU$4.84
    PayPal Fee: +AU$4.45
    Total Saving: - AU$ 5.00
    Grand Total: AU$ 115.74

    • Trying paying for it via paypal..The prices will go up and convert to US 119

      • +1

But it's still cheap. Hope it's not factory second.

      • +1

Yes, I just did and Paypal converted the 119.6 USD to $131.99 AUD. Talk about expensive paypal fees :p

    • Is AU$ 115.74 on your Paypal receipt?

      • +1

only on invoice page. I think their website is not really professional.

        • +1

They have no reviews on the reseller rating site. Doesn't look reliable at all. Google and found people calling them scammers.

Edit: It's a Hong Kong based company and should be reliable.

        • yea, i was going to buy it at $115 aud then pulled out when i saw $131.99.

        • To be honest, $132 delivered is cheap. Dx.com selling this US$192+

        • certainly.. i'll wait for a reply of price match from another seller that i use often.

  • "WCDMA 850/2100MHz"

    it this serious?

    • "WCDMA 850/2100MHz"
      it this serious?

probably is, but I prefer 900/2100Mhz as the only 850MHz carriers are Telstra & Vodafone…

But the price and specs of this phone deserves a +ve…

      • I just did a quick research.
Reviewers and reps in other shops is saying other wise about the network support (WCDMA 850 thing)
Also UMI X1's network support that I can find is inconsistent too. so confusing.

        • Did a little bit of Googling well here are the different variations I found… lol

          WCDMA 900/2100MHz : Umi S1

          WCDMA 850/2100MHz : Umi S1

          WCDMA 2100MHz : Umi S1 & Umi S1 & Umi S1 & Umi S1

          WCDMA 900/1900/2100MHz : Umi S1

        • Here's a hopefully helpful site:
          http://beranger.org/2013/08/17/chinaware-and-900-mhz-3g-fail….

It seem that UMI phones can be quad frequency 850/900/1900/2100 but are usually only tested for 2100 and then 850 as they are the commonly used frequencies in China, so they often under report the phone spec 3g wise, while battery life is always very optimistic.

I thought this deal looks too good to be true as well.

  • How many of you order this phone from ttmalls?

  • Our dear friend, what do you say on this new handset?

Be more comfortable with the quality of the very similar (slightly smaller and lower res) but otherwise very similar Lenovo A820 $133 at merimobiles - Lenovo are one of the worlds largest and highest quality tech manufacturers and the 820 has a big community behind it and accesories are readily available.
Also merimobiles is well known in chinese tech buying circles and has great warranty and after sales support (I have experienced this 1st hand) - with native english speakers - and are far better most chinese suppliers in my exp, could be cos they are canadian lol.

    • +2

could be cos they are canadian lol.

could be cos they are canadian eeh.

No one here on OZB is gonna buy "NOLOVE" Chinese crap after that laptop price error deal last weekend.

A heap of people pounced on something they knew had to be a pricing error. Most of them were pretty rational about it, nothing ventured nothing gained, but if they won't sell it at the erroneous price then nothing lost either.
The ACL which protects consumers makes it VERY clear that it is unreasonable to think that companies should wear a (in many cases potentially bankrupting) loss because of a small and very easy to make error by an employee.
In MY opinion it is downright mercenary and bloody immoral to EXPECT to profit from deliberately attempting to purchase something at a price you know full well is likely invalid and accidental and which you know that if they were to honour it they would make MASSIVE losses.
Are you SERIOUSLY saying that in their situation you would think to yourself 'We REALLY should reward these people for trying to take advantage of us with an obvious error in the hope we would lose money, they are EXACTLY the kind of customer we want'?
It would be different if it was a few people who had bought in good faith thinking it was a legitimate sale price, you may consider compensating THEM for the MINOR inconvenience, but their server logs would have told them by the sheer number of clickthroughs from an ozbargain page stating that it was a pricing error that it wasn't the case here. What possible reason is there for them to feel obliged to give something for free to people who they KNEW for a fact were trying to take advantage? Is that really the sort of behavior you feel we should be encouraging in our society? To the extent that we should bad mouth companies that don't pay off people who try to effectively rip them off?
I have bought stuff that unbeknownst to me was a pricing error (lowest price on SI for something i had been watching prices of for some time and buying whenever chea) and all I got was a email with an automated receipt showing a transaction reversal, and my father in law (who I had told about the deal) got the same. No explanation, no apology, no nothing other than a wait of a week for our money - and that was only about $20/10% of the item. IT-Estate were never even apologetic, and naturally it has given me (and my FIL) a bad taste in my mouth regarding them but we don't go around bad mouthing them at every given opportunity - it was a mistake, sure they handled it poorly but it was a mistake. We all make mistakes - I dont expect people to pay me every time they make a typo.
Honesty Lenovo have done EXACTLY what they should have, kept you informed, apologised and given you your money back. To EXPECT they give you more is outright silver spoon behavior.

        • Cool story bro

        • -1

So you are saying happiness is always about comparison? You must know that we as customers are actually the ones who PAY the real money to buy products or services not the other way around. By saying that, they are the ones who should deliver the goods or services when they receive our money. It's ok everyone makes mistake but when a mistake becomes so widespread from a professional company (and no, there are heaps other PC makers so no monopoly seller here like MS), it will turn into a chaos and if the company does not deal with the chaos well, they will loose future business from us and it won't do any good for the company's reputation. After all, it's their lost not us (well, except the time for mucking around). I have never owned a Lenovo and judging from this incident, there won't be any Lenovo for me.

        • -1

I dont know where the heck you get your first line from. What I am simply saying is if you pay for something KNOWING it is a pricing error then you have no right to expect ANYTHING more than your money back and an apology/explanation of the fact. Even if you do not knowingly attempt to take advantage it is unreasonable to expect a company to lose money for simple typo. We have some of the strongest consumer protection laws in the world and they say the same thing. To feel upset because you dont get more seems the height of 'entitled' behavior.

As an example if you put for sale $20000 on the front of your car in 1 letter per a4 page and the first or last zero fell off, would you seriously feel obliged to sell it to the person for two grand, or give them some sort of compensation further than an apology for the time they spent calling you? Of course not. And if they tried to badmouth you for it one would hope they would be laughed at.

The mistake hardly seems to have been widespread either - it affected ONE colour modifier (which applied to several models) and ONE screen option on another model for a period of less than 3 days, and seems quite like somebody entered the price as a negative or that there was some sort of database corruption. That these modifiers affected a number of models hardly makes them widespread errors, just one very narrow errors (an unusual colour) could be applied to a number of models. People seemed quite sure from the start that it must have been a pricing error - why on earth would they be upset to be proven right, and given a full refund and sincere apology despite their deliberate attempt to take advantage?

History shows us (and their marketing people) that nothing short of total order fulfillment would have satisfied the mob here, so what would have been the point of doing more - people would have probably seen an appropriate % off as an 'insult' and have just made it worse. History also seems that if they HAD just eaten the loss, nobody would have been grateful anyway, and they would have been seen as a joke either way. Why bother?

If you had instead done the ethical thing and (whether you bought or not) reported the suspected error to them directly THEN you might have had call to hope they would be more grateful, and generous.
I am all for great bargains, but things should be win-win, not taking advantage of others in a win-lose.

There is also a lot to be said also about whether OzBers are really Lenovo PC's target market a (given they make some of the toughest and highest end mobile workstations and corporate PCs, and models for which there really isn't any competition - its lenovo or nothing) and whether that affects the fact they aren't desperate to grovel to us, but I don't think it matters and I CBF.

The fact is they made a mistake. They apologised and made full restitution. What possible RIGHT do you have to EXPECT more?

Paypal transaction payment to [email protected] , not ttmails.com?

    I pass on the deal.

  • Don't China phones come with spare (*2 in box) battery setup? Also, 'IPS' normally given by Screen Type. Presentation appears a little opaque& inaccurate. /maybe that's why cheap ?

  • Anyone find any difference with SAR ratings? I don't want to fry my noggin

    • SAR ratings are usually higher on dual sim devices.

I'm not sure if this true to dual sim standby or dual sim active. Probably both.
But if you want lower SAR ratings I suggest you look for a single SIM phone.

      • I meant Chinese stock vs Australian stock… especially generic vs brand name.

They may be great value but I've had replicas before which felt like you could cook an egg off!

  • Bought one

I did the checkout and was about to do the Paypal Checkout … and pulled the pin didnt buy one i was just a bit sus … not much feedback about this company..

  • Hey all, so if I use only one sim with this one, does it mean I get better battery life , or are both recievers on regardless.? Anyone actually used this model in the flesh yet?

  • Guys, have a look at the video, at 3.00 sec when they skip the Antutu benchmark tests.
So stupid , they at least should show us the results so we could get an idea of its performance.
I wont buy another another 5" chinese phone, all 3 have beeen terrible, failed from 3 to 7 months.
2 faulty screns and one faulty digitizer.
And warranty Pffftt , cost me more to send the phones back than what they are worth.
My advice is buy with real warranty and/OR if you cant afford it then get something that has really good reviews,
    i.e reviews that are independent

    • antutu score is above 13000.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsV70qRdxRs

you mind sharing which phones have failed you?

      • Cmon how come you still believe antutu, i bought fake s4 (the top one with air sensor) and antutu kept saying it is a real one with 16gb and 2gb ram which is not a real specs. If the specs not real how come the result can be trust?

    • I had to return a Chinaphone after a bad ROM flash which killed the camera on the THL W8. This was Deal Extreme though which had a warehouse address in Australia, so shipping it back was extremely fast and convenient.

      • when u buy the phone, was it from dx.com china website or their AU website?

        • +1

Their DX.com website. It was shipped from HK via Toll courier.

        • surprise to find they let you return to AU distributor instead of CN/HK where you bought your phone from! DX are good these days!

    • -1

Worth noting that merimobiles pay return shipping on DDOA and warranty returns, as stated in their T&Cs, and actually follow through with it once an RA is issued, as shown in many forum posts

  • Hmm im not sure.

Time to upgrade the HTC velocity. Am on Liveconnected 3g network though so LTE isnt a concern, This or Nexus 4? I could sell the Velocity on Gumtree for $120 so straight swaps to this.

  • How bright are the displays on these phones?
A lot of cheaper LCD displays are very hard to read outdoors.

  • Very Very good price.. The best value Chinaphone was the THL W200.. This is similar specs and at least $60 less than the W200. UMI is just as good brand as THL too.

I smell fish… fishy fishy fishy

    http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-5606…

WesternUnion and MoneyGram as payments normally indicate scams as they cannot be refunded:
    http://fraudwatchers.org/forums/view.php?pg=fw_western_union

Website is hosted by Bluehost / domain from GoDaddy, don't know why but seems amateurish…

Domain created late 2011, yet copyright 2008 to 2011…

    Here's my take on it…

I think if you buy the phone, you will receive it, but any defects etc., don't expect to get anything back.
Best option is to pay with Paypal and faster shipping, and hope to dispute a transaction, if anything goes wrong.

    • +1

The best idea is to stay away from this seller.

      Why?

First, they don't have 128 bit SSL encryption on their payment page and not even partially encryption as this was the minimum requirement.

Second, the Paypal payment was sent to a gmail user name "[email protected]" and not their company name (that's a bit fishy going on).

Third, the phone description/brand name/model number was not on the Paypal invoice. They changed it to a random numbers. This isn't IG products, I don't see why they need to change product name into generic codes. The only explanation is you won't able to open a dispute and claim a refund.

Good luck to those who ordered it!

      • 1) doesn't payment go through paypal? which is secure.
        2) my ebay seller name and paypal name are totally different
        3) the description appears in the invoice emailed through following the sale.

let's wait and see what happens.

  • Well I just spoke to live chat as to why they charged me $119 USD instead of $115.71 AUD? But they were acting like it was right exchange rate so whats the matter? I was like no the invoice says $115.71 AUD not $119 USD, so now they are investigating the issue and will get back to me within 24 hours.

    • us$119 is the price given above. The 115 AUD is obviously an error, so why are you complaining?

      • Well if they say its an error that's fine! But my invoice says $115.71 AU so they should have charged me that not $119 US. So I asked why? So I'm not complaining just wanted to know if its a mistake.

    • Everytime I click to pay with Paypal using AUD currency it changes back to USD… and then sends me a confirmation email before I even pay.

  • Dead link. Looks like the deal has been pulled early.

  • I did a silly thing… i had a change of mind and purchased this phone and paid extra with DHL delivery…. i tried logging in this morning into there website on the account i created and it kept coming back with an error… un-known user… hmmmm.. tried everything ..all i can see is they have CLOSED MY ACCOUNT.. and there is no way to check the order… i have already done a PayPal dispute and will try there online chat thing later today….
BE WARNED GUYS AND GALS CHECK YOUR TTMALL ACCOUNT STRAIGHT AWAY!!

  • Just an update….they finally answered me online chat and they dont have any stock people …they are (hopefully) refunding me!

  • Refunded in full ..

  • I opened a dispute and asked for a refund as they didn't seem too trustworthy. Received full refund within two days. They only problem is, it's in USD, will paypal return the currency conversion?

    • yes.

  • Update. 8 days after ordering, still showing as "processing".
Went onto live chat and they said the UMI S1 wasn't in stock, so they'll refund me in 2 working days.
Bit naughty to hold onto the cash for so long without information.
Have been promised refund, but obviously there is a slight concern here….

    • I received a refund within two days via paypal once I asked them
