Johnnie Walker Blue Label $159.95 at Dan Murphy's

590

I think these are generally over $200 so I was surprised when I found it at Dan's for $160….! Not every store has them in stock, but I managed to pick up a bottle from the QV site.

Dan Murphy's have got Johnnie Blues on sale at 160 often. Thanks for the post anyway.

Personally, I'd prefer to spend that on 3 bottles of the Double Black and have change left over to buy some of the 2ltr Cokes at Coles…

    • +2

Personal preferences aside, I thought it was a good deal…. :)

        • +19

Maybe a different target audience considering the price.

Bogans prefer the black - it's cheaper.
The smarter folk with better taste prefer to drink something that isn't Johnnies. Hence the lower rating.

Bogans prefer the black - it's cheaper.

          Bogans drink Jim Beam…

        • +7

I thought the red was more of the bogan bottle. Or Black Douglas.

        • +4

          Lies! They prefer Bundaberg

        • +6

45$ a bottle of Johnywalker black is for bogan? That's one rich bogan !!

        • +2

No idea why you've been negged so much, ah wait it's just because you're jv…

Your completely right. Blue label is only that expensive because of the rarity that Johnny Walker claims it has it has nothing to do with quality.

Both black label and double black have higher rating and are arguably better blends. I know I would certainly prefer your option over blue label.

        • +9

Bogans drink 500mL cans of Woodstock.

        • +1

cashed up bogan! its a thing

        • i always cringe and laugh when I see people with a huge trolley of booze and a big slab of that swill..

        • -2

          bogans mix coke with scotch

        • Bogan doesn't mean poor. What about all the bogans working in the mines or as tradies. They're loaded, but still bogans.

        • +2

Pretentious people can't enjoy a drink because they are too worried about what people think of them.

    • +4

glad to hear you enjoy your scotch in whatever combination … but I wouldn't do that :P

      • +25

        I only use premium Coke…

    • +1

That makes sense if you mix whisky with coke, then the very ordinary JW Black is fine, don't waste your money on a good whisky.
But if you drink it straight, or in simple cocktails then you need a good quality whisky.
I've never tried JW Blue but there are some excellent single malts at DMs for the $100 mark.

      • any suggestions on single malts of those around $100 mark that you mentioned plz?

If you are new to whisky, Glenfiddich 15/18 is very approachable. Glenlivet 15 is nice, also Aberlour. The Laphroaig 10 is a personal favorite, but definitely not one to try right off the bat.

Needless to say, it would be heresy to drink any of these with anything more than a splash of water added.

        • -4

with anything more than a splash of water added.

          3-4 drops of rain water…

        • +2

If you want to step away from scotch whiskies, some other great whisky's are:
          - Starward
          - Yamazaki

        • +2

+1 Glenlivet. Doesn't have to be 15 year. The 12 year is very tasty.

        • +1

Note that these 4 are Islays and probably quite challenging to the new whisky drinker - smells include band-aids, iodine, sea salt, etc.

A great way to start on decent whisky is read the DM World Whisky Guide: http://danmurphys.com.au/list/whiskyguideintroduction

Glenlivet is a good one. I personally like Bushmills Black Bush (blended Irish) for my daily drink.

        • +2

8ml of pure Arctic glacial melt or GTFO.

        • bushmills 10yo is the best value whisky i have ever tried

        • +4

Agreed, the 12 yo Glenlivet is awesome. I drank a bottle once and no hangover the next day. Its the best single malt scotch whiskey for under $60.

        • Impressive feat! If I were to attempt such a fine accomplishment, I fear I would temporarily lose my site.

          • Nikka
          • Hibiki
        • +1

+1 to lagavulin…..if you like a smokey/peaty taste :) also like the yamazaki aswell

        • I was thinking of getting the blue label but ended up getting the 10 tee Laphroaig for $69 at vintage cellars

    • +2

Groan, here we go again. Johnny Blue is garbage - single malt all the way blah blah.

If you like the deal vote. If you don't move on.

      • +8

It's a bargain site. Explaining what makes something value for money is part of this site, otherwise you're unlikely to get a true bargain.

        • +3

Agreed. However when it comes to drink and food its entirely personal opinion, which while interesting (to some), belongs in a forum either here or elsewhere.

Posts that criticise peoples choice of drink (which happens Ad nauseam when it comes to Johnny Blue/ Corona etc) is a downright pain in the a$$. I'm a big boy if I want to drink Johnny Blue n coke and wash it down with a Corona stuffed with limes and lemons I will.

          IMO

and yesterday I had a spaghetti pizza (well, it was on their menu) at La Porchetta, and my italian wife has virtually disowned me

        • Hang on, did I just read spaghetti pizza? Dear lord!

        • +3

yeah, coz there needed to be a pizza invented that had more carbs!

        • spaghetti pizzas are awesome, I get one occasionally from La Sera in Vermont South, its even better with chicken breast and mushroom

    • dup.

    • +1

Mixing whisky and coke should be a punishable crime.

      • +5

punishment is to drink it !!!

      • It really depends what whiskey. Some are pretty much impossible to drink without being mixed, but anything over $50 (of actual quality, not some overpriced/marketed rubbish) should be enjoyed on its own or on the rocks.

Personally, I'm too cheap to spend money in alcohol. I rarely buy a six pack of beer, prefer to spend my money in good food or other things.

  • +4

just make sure this isn't green label with a faded label

  • +1

quite cheap considering it's $25 per drink (for the Blue) at the Ivy. Yes, it's not completely comparable and yes it's the Ivy …

    • Buddy Franklin can afford it…

  • +2

You can probably get it for $1 cheaper at a First Choice Liquor Store as part of their Price Beat policy: https://www.1stchoice.com.au/Ordering/Pricing

  • +16

Thanks OP.. Picked up a couple for the kids

  • lol at paying this for a blend. massively over-rated and over-priced.

  • Would be good for anyone who got the AMEX deal.

  • +4

These posts always polarise. I agree, for a Blue its technically cheap.

However, for $80-120 a single malt tastes well better in my opinion - this has been outlined above.

Don't be blind sighted by the blue - it's a marketing product that sells for a lot more than it should. Again, my opinion only.

But at $160, it's cheaper than it usually is….which doesn't make it cheap.

  • +1

Not a bad price, but the scotch is not as nice as the middle range from Walker, the platinum shits all over the blue and is 60 dollars cheaper. Some people get a kick out of the price and like to brag about how nice it is, those people are idiots.

  • I still prefer brushing my teeth with a bottle of Jack.

  • -1

I now sip tea instead of Whiskey. Just as good. It's all in the mind.

Props to the OP for posting this. But do yourself a favour.

ANd IMHO the two best bang for buck whiskeys EVER (in order):
    http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_73487/highland-park-12-y…

      Barely legal xxx

    • Highland Park 12yo FTW

Way better for the price IMO (of course there are many others that are way better + cheaper).

I thought everyone knew by now that Blue Label is ridiculously expensive for what it is. There's a reason it's price has been falling steadily over the past however many years…

I'd consider paying $100 for it, but not $160. Not even close to a bargain, unless you want to impress your friends…

  • Does anyone remember the Johnnie Walker blue label "TIffany" release? I always thought the only difference was the thicker blue glass the bottle is made from. It seems to be the normal bottle anyway? Maybe I was dreaming when I saw a Tiffany release of JW Blue

  • -1

hehe, funny how self proclaimed whisky connoisseurs would prefer a cheap single malt to a decent blend.
what's next, drinking it out of a tumbler?
