HCF Health Insurance: One Month Free When Joining Online (after 2 Months)

21

HCF are offering one month free when you join online and use direct debit. Plus you get instant access to many extras benefits.

I have been watching HCF for some time and this is the first one month free offer I have seen them have (I am in no way affiliated). I am switching from 8 years at BUPA (formerly HBA).

The reason I like HCF:
* Non-profit - they return ~91% of premiums vs industry ~85%
* They don't do kickbacks like iSelect, BetterBills etc. which I think reduces premiums
* No excess on most hospital cover for kids, any accidents, any day surgery (haven't found another fund that does this)
* Some extras include paying towards swimming lessons for kids without any GP medical certificate (only fund I can find that does this)
* Friendly twitter support team

Terms and conditions of 1 month free offer as per website

This web offer is limited to new members taking out new policies through hcf.com.au by 31 October 2013.

It is limited to new hospital only and combined hospital and extras policies on direct debit, with a limit of one month free per policy.

The one month free is applied after serving two months of paid membership on direct debit.

The offer excludes: Extras only health insurance, Overseas Visitors Health Cover, Ambulance Cover, Life, Travel and Pet Insurance.

It is not available in conjunction with any other offer or discounts (excluding the waiting period waiver offer).

Any refunds will only be available on premiums paid.

  • They only have their own dental clinics in NSW. I am with them for over two years now and still have to Google my way into find a Dentist who accepts HCF, which is not good enough. I have thought of switching to another, but then again, their value is better in other areas. On that, does anyone know a good Dentist around Melbourne who accepts HCF(including their 'More for Teeth' program)?

My dentist isn't in the program either, but I'll get over double back per item what BUPA currently pays me.

  • Isn't insurance the same as gambling?

    • +1

gambling with tax benefits. also, if you are in a position where you know you will need lots of services, it could be cost efficient (gambling whilst knowing the outcome). in addition, it adds incentive for you to look after your health - you've already paid for your dentist visit so you might as well go

    • We've had 3 babies in the last four years via PHI. Each cost our insurer BUPA in excess of $10k in hospital/medical charges for a $3000 annual premium which includes extras I have also claimed.
Also just claimed private hospital vasectomy (too many kids!) which adds much more to our claimed benefits.
We've definitely claimed more than we've paid, but that will probably change now no more babies and hence why we're scaling back to a cheaper cover with HCF.

Also just claimed private hospital vasectomy

elective surgeries aren't covered by most private health funds…

        • I think most funds cover it, like wisdom teeth removal.

Vasectomy reversals are a different story: they aren't even covered by Medicare.

        • We also had elective c-sections which were fully covered.

I think the point of private health insurance is you can elect to receive treatment: as opposed to waiting in the public system.

        • -1

Elective surgery is what private health insurance is all about. You can elect to have surgery without having to wait like in the public system (where you can wait years for elective surgery)

        • Why the negative then?

        • +1

Wrong! Private Health Insurance(PHI) does cover your NON Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme(PBS) medication costs up to 80 percent, where PBS doesn't cover. It covers for dental costs where Medicare doesn't cover. It covers for alternative medical therapy as well. In Public Health System, whether it's elective or not, unless it's n medical emergency, you'll have to wait.

        • I negged the deal, not private health insurance (though admittedly some people would view private health insurance negatively)

I have private health insurance. I haven't used it only because I'm relatively young, haven't had any health issues, but like it there in case I do need it. I only have Hospital cover as I have no need for Ancillary cover.

Did you consider just getting Foxtel?

        • Foxtel doesn't give you hugs

        • +1

          Hugs don't make babies.

  • I wonder how many % you can actually get back from HCF? (extras cover)
I'm with Frank and I get 80% back everything as long as it's not over the limit.

    • It varies.
I left my previous provider who offered a similar deal. I was paying a premium for top extras, yet I was also paying about $100 a year on dental cleaning too.now I get "no gap" cleaning with HCF, And they also pay for 1 term of swimming for each of my kids, and free glasses for each family member - unlike my previous provider.

Funny bit is that I lowered my cover with HCF. I pay nearly half^ of what I used to with my previous provider, and I'm WAY ahead compared to the other provider.

^ I get an extra 10% off with RAA, which makes it a bit cheaper and a slightly unfair comparison.

    • I looked at Frank but their extras cover doesn't cover services we use.
For example- they don't cover occupational therapy at all.
The xx% back is usually a gimmick coupled with very low annual benefit limits.

  • Any one can compare with HBF in W.A.?

  • Not really a deal. HCF and all other health insurers do one month free all the time. HCF also do kickbacks with iSelect (not sure about BetterBills)

    • When is the last time you have seen HCF do this? I haven't seen them do it in 6+ months…

      • I've seen them do it only a few months ago while I was checking for health insurance deals. They don't really advertise much so had to go look on their website specifically.
