Bing Lee have both the 42LG50FD (2" bigger, and 3 yr warranty, not to mention better picture) for $1499. http://www.binglee.com.au/LCD+Television/3773/LG+42LG50FD+10…

They also have the same Toshiba for $1499 - http://www.binglee.com.au/LCD+Television/3889/Toshiba+40CV55…

    Disclaimer: I'm a salesperson @ Bing Lee.

  • Rather a 40" Series 5 Sammy for around that price.

    • If you can find one, I'm sure we were doing LA40A550 for under $1350~.. problem is no stock, only display models available at that price.

Still the 42LG50FD has the best picture of the lot.

Wow damn it I wish there was a Bing Lee here in WA, but there ain't! I have been hunting for a big screen lcd tv for the last week, and my budget is 1500 and that LG would fit it perfectly! Grrrrrr. Anyone know of any really good deals here in WA? I missed out about a week and a half ago, The Good Guys were selling a 37" Toshiba for 899 only.. wouldn't have minded snapping that up and saving myself 600 bucks. Need help!

Also, I'm giving this a negative because this is NOT a bargain whatsoever.. I have been watching JB's website/catalogue for the last week and this has been out for awhile, and almost all their prices are higher than The Good Guys, Harvey Norman, etc. So negative for getting me all excited about seeing an big screen TV post, then realizing you've just regurgitated an old catalogue price with no research whatsoever.

        • I know The Good Guys in Osborne Park ( WA ) had the 42lg50 for $1599 less for cash last week , I am presuming it came down to around that mark.

I was in looking at the 50" 5 series Samung plasma and they had the 7 series over $1000 off + $250 g/v ( deal posted http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/11908 )

          Hope this helps

        • Ah! sometimes people post to find out if it is a good deal! I am not sure if this one falls into that category.

          1 person doing research=good, multiple ozbargainers research=priceless!

Not sure about the quality of the Toshiba tv's but I would be avoiding LG like the plague based on past experience with their poor quality products.

    • I kinda have been reading that as well, but is it true? Or.. I mean it obviously has truth behind it, but from a budget-constained person's point of view, maybe it's a good enough deal? Obviously if I had like 3k to burn I'd invest in a Sony or better, but unfortunately that isn't the case.. but should I really be avoiding LG? And maybe go for… Hisense? :)

Hey Skinny, I understand what you're saying, but then that would fall under the forums category, and not New Deals! You have to understand, my fingers are itching to bust this money on a tv.. you can't cry 'wolf' and not expect me react badly. :P

      • I have never really been a fan of the quality of the LG LCD panels. Unfortunately in this area of electronics you definately get what you pay for even with reputable brands like Sony and Samsung. If you buy even a cheap Sony/Samsung, chances are it will be a low end panel in the display. That being said I love the Samsung LCD's in general and for the most part their service is great.

Sony by the way all use Samsung LCD panels and in fact have a business partnership with Samsung with regards to the LCD panel business :)

        • There's a fair bit of conjecture surrounding that…

          http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/11/22/samsung-announces-plans…

Whilst Sony may have been using Sammy/Sony-built panels in the past for lower end models, it seems now they're more likely to be using Sharp panels. It's sorta hard to find anything credible beyond the press release from '06.

Besides which, there's more to the TV than just the LCD (i.e. led vs. ccfc backlighting).. although it definitely does play a large role!

          • @pais: Well here is an article backing up my previous claim of Sony using Samsung panels from mid 2008:
            http://www.forbes.com/2008/03/04/sony-lcdtv-samsung-markets-…

However like you said the panel itself isnt the only factor, but the quality of the electronics driving the panel as well. Which is why you should avoid brands like Kogan or other generic brands that claim to have name brand panels but poor electronics behind the panel itself.

  • theres a wiki about hd tv prices you guys should have a google

  • Not a bargain, they have been selling this at this price since it came out. Even then Bing Lee and co are cheaper. I've seen it at $1390 before.
