Jesus! I DON'T want this TV and I'm still close to grabbing one at this price; this TV is just that good.

    • +3

Trust me KLoNe, you want this TV :)

  • thanks for the reviews

  • +8

damn, wish there was a good price for the 60"

    • +1

Me too - dying for the 60" version of this to drop in price, closer to $1300 - $1500… but damn this is tempting!! Sad they're slowly killing off the plasmas :(

  • +1

Need a smaller one. How big do they think my house is?

    • +1

      50" big? What are you, a time-traveller from 2010? =D

  • Really tempted to pick this TV up as my old panasonic plasma died and have been given a gift voucher but with JB. Was waiting for the Sony 55" W800 to drop more in price closer to christmas or for Sony to have a Christmas promo. Need to decide this or wait for the Sony.

    • +9

IHMO plasma beats LCD hands down. It'd have to be an extremely bright room to prefer LCD (and even then I'd just go Samsung F8500). You won't be sorry if you pick this up for <$1000. And if you go to JB they might even price match (so you can still use your vouchers).

      • +1

JB would 99% price match this. Great tip AF!

        • I don't think JB carry Panasonic Plasma anymore as they only have Samsung and LG on their website. Might pop down to one of their store and have a look to see whether they have it.

        • My bad. I probably didn't really take notice as they don't carry much plasma on their website and they were all more or less on the premium side unless it was cheap LG. Will see whether they have the 50" in store.

        • They may not have in stock, but they can order it in. I got JB to order the 65" one for me.

    • +2

No LED will out perform this plasma. Panasonic have got such a great black level on the ST series, contrast that LED as a technology will not match. 1k is a bargain. $2300 for the 65 inch.

      • Panasonic have got such a great black level on the ST series

Too bad the picture is noisy - dither is very noticeable from practical viewing distance and show stopper for me. Otherwise, nice panel, soon to be extinct.

No LED will out perform this plasma.

LCD screens using LEDs for backlighting are not same as (O)LED screens (… I thought ACCC clarified all that.) And LED screens, once they arrive and mature, will more than likely, equal or outpeform Plasma.

        • -1

When did I speak of OLED? Which by the way is more like a plasma. It can completely switch pixels off, therefore greater black levels are achievable. LED cannot do this, which is a limitation of the technology. No matter how bright, sharp or how high the resolution, LED will always be eclipsed by superior contrast, colour accuracy and black level, which plasma has always had in its favour and to me are the most important variables that make for a great panel.

        • It can completely switch pixels off … LED cannot do this, which is a limitation of the technology.

You need to learn what LEDs are, first.

Hint: OLED is a type of LED.

  • +2

This is a great buy for general TV and Blurays. If gaming you will want to give it a miss. Input lag is horrendous

    • I can't speak for this exact model, but I own an older panasonic plasma and its the best display I've ever gamed on.

The motion and color reproduction are a generation ahead of LCD, most of my games are played at 1080p 60fps on PC and the only times I have noticed input lag was when playing on a console with a game known for input lag regardless of display (GTAIV).

  • +1

    Oh dear, I have the 'old' 50ST50A & now i have a new 50ST60A.
The old one has a brilliant picture and i bought the new one based on the quality of that!

    • I'll take your old one off your hands…

    • Oh dear? Kick it to me. I only have an old 32" Panasonic Viera and wouldn't mind a 50" at all. Well pleased with it's performance though. I am well overdue to upgrade my son's old (analogue) gaming/bedroom television (requires 32" so may buy a Soniq from JB) so he could have the 32" no worries there. Have you noticed that once you go over the 40" ones the prices dramatically increase? I guess no one wants them.

Ps. What do we do with the old analogue televisions these days?

  • I missed this screen on the recent weekend sale and was gutted. This has free delivery!!
    Thanks OP

  • +1

Save yourself some money and get one that doesn't have the useless 3D feature

    • +1

I don't care about 3D either, but for me this screen is about the picture quality not the 3D.

    • +5

If you don't want 3D sell the glasses and recoup some of the original purchase price.

  • Got price from Good Guys a month or two ago for $1150 which I thought was good, didn't get it yet though… so glad I waited! Can't wait for it to be delivered :).

  • +2

pretty good price but not big enough for me :(

    • How about a 65" VT60. Bigger, better and onsale.
      http://www.dicksmith.com.au/tvs/panasonic-65-165cm-full-hd-s…

$1 sale….. Bwahahhaa….. Why do they even bother to put that on sale

      • It's $501 off.

        • Crap… I was looking too quickly… Ooops.. Thanks for the correction.
I won't edit my previous post as then the whole thread won't make any sense.

        • I cant afford the VT unfortunately. Some people reported getting it for 3K+.

      • VT series… Noted by many reputable reviewers as simply the best panel they've ever seen! The ST series only little way off.

  • +1

How would it be for gaming? Not seeing specs regarding refresh/response rate..?

    • Did some of my own research, some bad feedback regarding input lag. Sadface

    • Input lag on these is bad, CNET themselves have reviewed it as "significant", then there is the power consumption, if you play for long hours…, here's a recent forum post on Whirlpool related to gaming on a 50" Panasonic Plasma(something to read about)…

      • here's a recent forum post on Whirlpool related to gaming on a 50" Panasonic Plasma(something to read about)…

That's hardly indicative of all plasma's. It was one user who was playing it at high contrast and brightness on a basically brand new plasma (he then went and changed his story about not having it at 100 brightness) and playing games for a fairly long time.

My F8500 has no issues at all with IR (neither did my previous U30 plasma), because I didn't display static images and ran a variety of full screen content for the first 100-150 hours.

I really wouldn't be taking that as an actual argument at all against plasma's for gaming, as is shown by the amount of posters on there who have proved the OP otherwise.

which one is better apart from the obvious size difference?

    • +2

UT is the lowest model. I watch several SD and a couple blue ray movies on both the ST and UT and the difference in PQ is very obvious

      • Thank you Andrew, pulled the trigger, your comment did it for me. I am still using an old 32" Samsung LCD so this will be a huge step up for me.

        • Im sure you will enjoy it. My dad has this TV at his place and we all love it. In term of PQ, this TV and the Sammy F8500 is probably the best in the market at the moment, unless you are willing to pay for the VT model

    • UT doesn't have the anti-reflective filter, in a dark room picture quality would be the same between the two. If you haven't a light controlled environment get the ST. UT is perfect for a media room.

  • got one, thanks OP!

  • if i hook this up to a pc would i run into problems with burn in?

  • omg , bought mine for $1100 last year, best tv ever, wish i got the new ver. =/

  • +1

Can burn-in be permanent? Yes. But you've got to work really hard at it. As in, you have to either be trying to burn an image in, or be forgetful enough to leave a single image on the screen for days. Because you have to be exceptionally careless to cause serious burn-in, plasma companies' warranties don't cover it. They also won't cover throwing things at the screen, dropping it in the pool, or lighting it on fire.

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20092238-1/is-plasma-hdt…

  • I have last year's 60ST50. And I probably didnt have to read it, but David Mackenzie's review of this years model is nothing short of amazing. I am getting this for the other lounge room :)

Hoping JB hifi can price match as I have a gift card there.

  • got one for my new house….lol

  • The only thing that holds me back on Panasonic panels is the 50hz bug. Pretty important seeing as we are a PAL territory. That and the floating blacks - but I think they fixed that? I had the VT20.

    • The floating blacks was annoying but was fixed with a firmware update (had to do with the auto-brightness function). And was only a problem if you had the auto-brightness turned on in the first place. Never had an issue with the 50hz bug so I can't speak to it.

      • Hi. No, the brightness shifting happened regardless of the auto-brightness setting (which I had off, anyway) - which is the whole reason it was annoying. Power saving 'feature'. Never received the update. I know they done a small update for it in Europe.

50hz bug is part of every panel, and has been for quite a few generations. PAL material is displayed inferioir to that of NTSC, 24fps etc. Not hugely noticeable, but enough for a film nerd like me. Don't think they've fixed it yet - possibly lessened now however.

That said, EVERY TV has drawbacks. Just depends on whether you can live with it. I couldn't myself, but that's just me.

  • This should be the best 50" TV under $1k. But, I suggest give this new plasma "run-in" for first few weeks.
My father has a Panasonic plasma and he watch mostly TV channel if not all, he used it for 1+ years before we swap the TV. His TV has serious image retention, which last almost 1 month before it gone (yes, the IR is all gone now and the picture is wonderful again).

  • +2

can I vote + twice?? great deal… paid about 1250 a year ago for the 50ST50… its still worth what I paid.. if you need a tv… if you want a tv.. don't hesitate…

  • +2

One of the best tvs man kind has created.
If buying instore remeber to use ing card, if it doesn't work, just purchase gift cards at $99.99 each, don't see a prob with that.

  • Upgrading from a TH37PX80 which is 6 years old but still has an awesome picture

  • +1

I bought this tv about 3 months ago. Absolutely brilliant PQ. The black levels are incredible. I've also had pictures paused for a couple of hours with no burn in whatsoever.

    Best tv I've ever bought.

  • Would the ST60A be considered as a major improvement over the GT30A?

    • +1

Yes, the ST50 was a major improvement over the GT30 and ST60 is better again with an improved AR filter.

  • Get on board! Thanks OP. Got one.

  • I'm on-board with this deal. Thanks OP!

  • No good for gaming though right?

    • +2

I think Sony LCD screens are the best for gaming… 17ms respose = very low lag.

  • -4

I got the Samsung plasma tv 51'' d550 full hd. does this one much beter for picture quality and video format .I always plug the hdd to usb port on tivi to watch movie. samsung do really good on this,no need buy the hdd player. but going to give it to my mum.

  • +6

For those of you with Woolies Staff cards they still have the 5% discount (even though dickies has been sold off). Just got mine for $947.14. Pow!

    • Hard to compare a 50" Plasma with a 40" LCD/LED

But I wouldn't buy this TV from your link - its a 50hz only, these days 100hz is minimum

      • Still a no for me - no 3d, no smart tv function

        • -2

Ask anyone you know who has a tv with the features you speak of and how often they use them.

          Gimmick.

        • +2

I use Netflix, BBC iPlayer etc a lot actually. Thanks for asking :-)

  • Seems like the free shipping is not working anymore…

Edit - Out of Stock Online

  • Out of Stock

  • Waitting for the SONY's….

  • I would get this right now, but is there any chance they'll go even lower at Christmas?

    • Maybe another $50 cheaper, but I doubt you would see any significant saving, imo just get it now and enjoy. FYI when I was in the market for the ST50, the lowest price throughout the entire year was $950 from DSE.

  • +1

Does DSE offer delivery when you buy in-store and how much would they usually charge?

    • I went in store today and they said delivery and installation was an additional $98. Not sure how different that service is to online free shipping.

  • +1

can i use this for triple display for pc gaming?
    if so, should I?

  • +1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJSAWczrwUI Here you go guys example of the input lag with first person shooter.. Difference isn't to bad.. maybe playable

    • Cant remember if I ever had input lag on my TH-P42S10A

      Guess not :) lol

      • Again waiting for the sony's to drop 55W800A especially. lowest input lag on a LED tv ever so far?

        • Same here waiting for it to drop more. Cheapest I have seen is $1600. Hope Sony comes out with a good Christmas promo or for the price to drop more closer to Christmas.

    • Perhaps input lag needs to be felt rather than seen but it honestly didn't seem all that bad to me. I did watch this on a 7 inch tablet though.

  • +1

Does anybody know Panasonic's dead/bright pixel policy for its plasma TVs?

Recently I have a bad experience with a 27" Samsung combo monitor TV. Fortunately the product is classed as a monitor, so it has a zero screen defect guarantee. After replacing the LCD panel three times, I obtained a full refund from Samsung.

By the way, LG's combo monitor TV products are classed as TVs and they do not have zero screen defect guarantees. It took LG customer service three days to give me this answer. LG will evaluate defective screens on a case-by-case basis. Factors include numbers of defect, dead vs bright pixels, defect occurring in the central vs peripheral viewing areas.

  • Bought it. Hope it doesnt disappoint

    • +1

Just make sure you calibrate it properly once arrived. Do a google search for ST60 calibration.

      • +2

Give it a month or so of normal watching with contrast and brightness turned down. No point calibrating it to start with till the panel has 'set in' a bit.

  • Does click and collect work for anyone? Not working for me.

    • This item is not available for click and collect. Just grabbed one at my local DSE this morning.

  • Yeah, both options not working so maybe its SOLD out already.

  • Panasonic just announced it's closing down it's Plasma TV production, so I'd say they want to get rid of all the "plasma TV" stock ASAP, probably why this is so cheap.

    • Source?

Even if true and OLED replaces plasma, why would they hand over all the market share to Samsung?

Plus. I'll never buy a large LED, they're overpriced rubbish.

  • Re Input Lag, here is the CNET review
    http://www.cnet.com.au/panasonic-th-p50st60a-339345649.htm?f…

that links to this test about TVs and input lag
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33199_7-57587317-221/game-mode-…

"So if you're an avid twitch gamer, should you buy a TV like the Panasonic TC-PST60, a model I gave 9/10 for picture quality, but which scored a Poor 75.73 on my input lag test? No, you shouldn't. Instead, the S60 would be an excellent alternative. If you're less avid, or play less twitchy games, input lag should be less of a consideration."

  • Option to get it cheaper: make sure your local DSE has them in stock, then buy one from the Good Guys today at $1289, per current web price (at time of this post) -
    http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buyonline/Panasonic_50%22(127cm)_FHD_Plasma_3D_Smart_TV_TH-P50ST60A

Go back soon after and say you've just noticed the same TV available today at DSE and you want the price gaurantee, knowing your local has them in stock - 120% of the difference in price - http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buyonline/ContentDisplayView?e…

    $1289 - $997 = $292, 120% = $350.40. $1289 - $350.40 means you'll pay $938.60 for this TV. Get on it quickly before Good Guys update their price online/instore.

    • +4

Too many horror stories about GG's price match policy to take the risk in my view.

    • Tried that before and they refused- below cost price.

  • They've sold out of online stock. I tried getting 1 online last night before it went into out-of-stock. Then again this morning at 7:30am, whenever I added or removed 1 or 2 of them from my shopping cart it would update in real-time In-stock and out-of-stock. Still couldn't get past the Click & Collect issue, so I called the online sales team who advised they had 32 pending online orders, no ETA for next delivery, and if I managed to get an online order in I'd probably be waiting a month.

Only option is to call up your local DSE and ask if the have any. I called up my local and they had 2 in-stock - rushed out and bought 1 (They had 4, I called at 9:45, they'd already sold 2 from 9am opening, no over-the-phone reservations, first-in-first-served). They're going like hot-cakes in-store as well.

My Heart sank when I saw this post … I bought one of these from the Good Guys in Moorabbin last Sunday for $1100 + $289 for 4 yrs warranty. I remembered the Good Guys "price guarantee policy" and went down to the store this morning. Without hesitation, they were very happy to refund not only the difference in price but also recalculate the warranty based on the new purchase price. Then they added 20% to the refund. This experience has left me very confident in buying goods from the Good Guys in the future. A BIG PLUS FROM ME !!!!
