40

Hey ozbers

People probably already know about this deal but I couldn't see an original post for this new kogan phone.

Excellent deal Ruslan has done it again with his amazing rebranding skills. Only thing missing here for me is 4g.

At least its 720p 5" this time !

Kogan deals never seem like deals…. I could swear some people around here are one commission from them.

    • +1

Even Ozb people buy from Kogan crap. That is just shocking

      *on

Well kogan have a pretty good rep here with their pricing error and their vouchers to compensate! Would buy from Logan given that their is a good deal that is.

        • -3

Good rep? Most would only ever buy from him if the deal is clearly making a lose, just to scree him over.

In the case, is definitely pay a $100 for nexus 4.

a friend just purchased this. camera is terrible, however overall not a bad phone. would i buy it…probably not as there is not enough mileage to see how long it will last. cheap chinese crap tend to be cheap chinese crap.

    • +5

Yep, and without knowing the original brand, there are little options for software updates. If something is broken in the firmware, you could be screwed.

I'd take a known China brand phone over this, and you can get them for roughly the same price.

    • I bought the original 'cheap chinese crap' Kogan phone at the start of the year and it's still going strong. Within a month of owning a Samsung Galaxy S2 I returned it due to the glitchy Samsung software and went to a Windowsphone for a more stable OS. The vanilla android experience from the Kogan has made me appreciate android all over again.

Would I buy the new one? No… Because my original Kogan phone is the best phone I've owned and still does everything I need it to do :)

I have this phone. I replaced a Galaxy S3 because I wanted a Dual SIM - no requirement for data on one of the SIMs as it is for overseas and I don't use it.

This phone is great - beats the S3 for battery life hands down (3 days vs 1 day battery life!!!). If you use whirlpool forums you will find that this phone is an Indian manufactured phone from a very reputable Indian manufacturer (did I just write that!) - http://www.micromaxinfo.com/mobiles/smartphones/canvas/A116-…

The Whirlpool forums for this device also shows how to Root the device if you want to, but I find it more solid than my S3 (never have to reboot) and because its not running Samsung bloatware, it runs very well. Having said that, I got my S3 modded to run cyanogenmod and it runs alot better now running stock standard Google.

Holy crap I've wondered who made these phones for them. Just looked them up and their latest phone (micromax canvas turbo A250) is an absolutely brilliant phone.

        Screen 12.7 - 5" (1920x1080p IPS)
        OS Android Jelly Bean 4.2.1
        Processor 1.5 GHz MediaTek Quad-Core
Camera 13MP AF Rear and 5MP FF Front Camera
Standard sim + micro sim (dual sim)
        2gb ram
        Bluetooth V4

Seriously brilliant stuff and all for $340AUD (converted not shipped).

        • That does look good.

        • nice it would be my next phone if it weren't for the nexus 5 (and even then depending on the price(

This phone has a 2000 mah battery. I doubt that you can make it last 3 days unless you kept the Wifi off, used the phone only in 2g mode, made few phone calls and with very little 'screen on' time.

        • +1

If I wasn't such a heavy phone user, mine would last well over two days. Over a period of four hours, my phone dropped from 6% to 4%. The only use during that time was to show the phones capabilities.
Maybe the bloatware makes known manufacturers phones use lots of battery power? Regardless, from someone that owns a Kogan (original) I can see how three days (maybe two and a half) would be very possible.

        • It is mostly the screen that drains the battery, and the bigger the screen, and the more pixels it has, the more power it drains. If you keep the screen off, then obviously you may even get 3 days standby on 2000mah but this is not a typical scenario for a smartphone.

A 5" 720p display on a phone with a mediocre battery size such as 2000mah will probably only last you 5 hours of actual 'usage', possibly less if cellular or wifi is on.

Micromax is an Indian company that rebadges named Chinese phones for local consumption / sale.

      • Micromax has two main drawbacks:
        1) 2000 mAH battery with 5 inch screen. We cannot get more than 4-5 hrs of practical usage.
        2) 4GB of ROM with 1.5GB available for apps. It will be filled quite quickly with the minimum app requirements. 32 GB of external storage will not be much use in that case.
Not to mention there is no warranty for us in AU. In India people struggle to get service from Micromax. Both handsets from Kogan and Micromax are manufactured in some China factory. No comparison to Samsung handsets.

  • Are there any cases or screen protectors available for this phone?

Also, is the camera as crappy as described by one user? I recently bought a Chi-phone and liked it but the flash and cam were so bad that I returned it - literally useless. The flash was a joke on a 5+ inch phone that otherwise was really nice.

So you;d really prefer this phone over an S3 (assuming no need for 4G)?

    Thanks guys.

    • You could buy the plain cover and cut it .. it's more fun :)

    • If you like excellent quality pics, don't buy the Kogan. Flash is useless. Only good as a flashlight.

  • Chinese phones are fine until something goes wrong (especially if the screen cracks). You've then got no way of getting it fixed.

    • +1

For the price of changing a S4 screen, you could buy one of these lol I'd rather crack a Kogan than an S4. That's how I justified my purchase.

    • Yeah.. but usually will cost more to get a new screen fixed than to just replace the phone totally. Last few quotes of getting screens fixed was in the order of under $200.

No 900mhz 3G, which is rural optus I think, so bear that in mind. also only 4GB of onboard storage. has a microSd slot, so not too much of an issue, but some apps and widgets won't allow moving to the SD slot.

a nexus 4 at $250 from the play store http://play.google.com/nexus4 would be an option over the agora if you want a known brand that's guaranteed to get updates for quite a while. Slightly smaller screen size and no SD card slot, but twice the internal storage (8gb), twice the ram (2gb), NFC, Qi charging, a bigger battery, higher resolution screen (1280x768) with gorilla glass 2, lighter and a classy build (plus 900mhz 3G, if that's an issue).

    • Is nexus 4 dual SIM? Doesn't say on the website

      • +1

        It's not.

    • +3

only 8gb internal memory and no expansion micro sd slot!?!?

that's a really short sighted design issue.

my office computer has a music folder of 25 gig. plus a few dozen movies. fits on to a 64gb micro sd which I can fairly easily slip into my china phone, and off I go.

having a nexus 4 and having to be selective of what to fit into the 8gb limit is dissappointing.

at least, for example, when you buy a pc with a small drive you can easily replace it or add an additional drive or use an external, etc. i.e. you would not be constrained by something that should be expandable.

though, if you're never going to keep a few hundred albums or music or photos and want it as a phone then fine.

      • +4

That was a very long winded way of saying "I like expandable memory'.

      • Some people like expandable memory. And I get that. However, for a lot of people, cloud/streaming is fine. I use Pandora and/or Google music and/or streaming internet radio for music. For movies/TV, I enjoy the experience of my home theatre, so watching on a tiny screen in stereo seems a bit underwhelming. Books work well on a (large) phone size screen, and they take up bugger all room, and I can easily get away with just a few at a time on the phone. It's not like I go months between having my phone have access to WiFi/internet.
