    Whats Akai's brand like reputation-wise?

After a bit of googling they seem like rebranded cut-down Samsung panels.

    • They are a cheap brand, but IIRC they've been selling in Australia for decades, so not quite a no-name.

Even if it was, that's a hell of a price…

    • I had an Akai Hifi system, was great !

      • +4

Akai as most people remember it went into (extensive) liquidation a number of years ago now. the brand was sold off as part of the asset firesale. its now no better than whatever you'd buy from Aldi or JB Hi-Fi in their medion/bauhn/soniq type teles.

same goes for AWA branded teles you see a big dubs.

still, for $299 who cares - its a bargain.

        • and Telefunken.

        • And my favourite (not) Palsonic

    • wow, this is the same brand that makes high end headphones.

  • How much is extended warranty? This warranted to 3 years would be mint.

    • I think it should be about $40

  • +5

    "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" - my bank account.

  • +1

Just called office works fivedock said sale starts Thursday but in add says Wednesday, have to say though girl sounded like she had no idea

    • +1

The ad I got doesn't have a starting date,I will amend ad to show starts today.

  • on sale now?

    Edit: nvm..

  • +1

Can I use this as a computer monitor with the HDMI to my GTX650?

    • +1

      yes

    • +4

Do realise that it won't look as great as an actual monitor, TVs generally don't reproduce the image they're sent pixel perfect so text won't look as sharp - you're missing some of the finer detail. I'd say this would be good for gaming or watching movies or something, but web browsing or writing documents will probably suffer.

Technically though it will work fine, just hook it up with a HDMI cable :) It might overscan when you do, as in cut off some of the edges of the picture. If this happens you can search in the TV's options for something like 'PC-mode' or 'overscan' to correct it, most TVs have this option.

      • unless it's a 4k tv.

        • +2

Cheapest 4k TV I know is a $3k Hisense from JB hifi. Pointless as you can get a high quality 1080p TV for that kind of money which will produce a nicer image than a crappy 4k.

    • I tried my Aldi 32" FHD on my 7950 and it looks like ass. The text was unreadable. I think you need 4:4:4 compatibility to use it as a monitor and these cheap TVs generally don't have it. Most brand name TVs have it.

      • Looks better if you go over VGA

  • Is this state specific? Anyone in WA sighted this in their junk mail? I looked up Akai on their webstore and got zero hits for that TV

    • not sure,im in SA where the ad is.

    • I got the same ad in Qld

  • the 2-year warranty is good,
as most other brands or no-brands would only give 1-yr warranty these days. (not sure of their after-sale support)

  • Anyone know what the picture quality is like?

  • Just called Lewisham Officeworks said starts Thursday also

  • +1

The offer is available in Victoria too. Just saw the catalog today.

  • +5

AKAI used to make its own products but now just rebadged generic Chinese products they can buy at the cheapest prices.

Still $299 for it isn't too bad, but I can't find it being sold anywhere else or even a model number.

Still spewing I missed the 50" Sanyo for $498 from last year though, I always regret not buying it.
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/74610

Will probably pass on this one and hold out for something better.

Been using my projector to watch TV and movies for about 1 year already but I don't really leave it on much like I would if I had a TV.

    • +9

That was a long time ago mate.

    • +23

Move on buddy. Time to start the healing process.

  • Dilemma.
This or the kogan 42" for 339?

    • Exactly what I was thinking. In the end you'd have to wait another month for Kogan's and it'd probably end up delayed anyway.

      • +9

Officeworks vs Kogan for after sales service, Officeworks any day thank you!

  • +5

I would stay away from kogan this is 299 and extra year warranty only losing 2inches

    • +21

My girlfriend said every inch matters….

I assume shes referring to our small tv

      • +19

I hate to be the one to break this to you but it's actually height and she plans on leaving you for a taller man with a larger TV.

        • +25

thanks for the warning, I just broke up with her before she could break up with me!

          Oz bargained her good…

        • +2

          way to get her.

  • +1

Dam, It went down by $100, my mate put the display model out to tad early last week, and had it removed, I scanned it and showed as $399, now it's $299, great tv I gota say, compared to the soniq 40 for $349. It's ashame it's way under cost price, staff 20% doesn't even work.

Il get more info for this tv and have a update, it's 50hz rf rate btw.

  • well spotted!

  • Super deal!

    • Only $100 off RRP but still an excellent price.

  • Looks like it's popular in India, at least targeted for that country.

    • just like the slogan says ..AKAI …make sense

  • Anyone know if it's available in WA? Tempted to replace my 32" Soniq with this. Don't really like the Soniq for gaming.

    • Does anybody know if this TV is any good for gaming e.g. response time ?

  • It should be all Officeworks, just do a store check with the product code "Sku" online order it over $55 free delivery

    • No luck. SKU search gives no results.

  • yeah I can not find the TV at all on the OW website..

$299 is good but it is still only 50HZ….

    still tempting though.

    • 50hz is standard in this price range. Not a problem for me.

      • Surely it can do 50 and 60Hz? I can't imagine that a LCD/LED TV would be 50Hz only.

If it's 50Hz only then this should be bolded in the O.P.

  • Would this TV support as many movie formats as in Samsung. I am more interested in watching movies from the Disk. I have a Samsung and used to have Hisense. I found that Samsung supports more formats.
Any idea about this? There is no place to find this info online. Someone who has already got this TV please comment on this.

  • Can you wall mount this tv?

  • Any info about NSW stock?
I'm thinking of going to OW at opening time tomorrow so I don't miss out.

    • +1

seriously I dont think this will be a very popular deal to the general public

      • I just called up and put one on reserve. It's gonna be a monster in my bedroom :)
Why do you say "not popular"? It's a big TV and it's cheap - what is there not to like about it?

        • Probably because of the brand. Most likely similar to Soniq, AWA, etc… You get what you pay for. Obviously you wouldn't get this for a main TV, but for a bedroom, spare room or hooking it up as a secondary display it should do just fine.

        • Turned out that I am very wrong :) It seems that everyone is jumping tot his deal. My initial thinking was that people would likely to go to JB or HN to get the like of Sony and Sammy rather than visiting OW to buy a TV.

  • New catalog is out with nsw stores included. Just picked one up myself from Sydney.

    • +2

Did you pickup the catalogue or the TV?

      • Picked the tv up, last one left. Attendant said they sold in 30 mins.

        • Does it have a headphone jack or RCA audio out? Seems a silly question but most TV's at this price point don't seem to have it or have quirks when using that function (Kogan buzz, another where hdmi source doesn't work for headphone jack). Want to use it with external speakers as assuming the built in ones are turd…

  • So this is available now? or the catalogue is available now?

  • Bought 1 from Auburn in NSW for $299. not many left. Thanks OP

    • How did you get one early?
The Indian guy at Wentworthville was firm about it starting tomorrow and told me to arrive early as they can't put them on hold.

    • I just called Auburn and the guy flatout refused to sell it today… He said they had about 8 in stock

  • What a shambles.

Out of 5 Officeworks around my area; 3 had stock and wouldn't sell until tomorrow and the other 2 had stock that was all reserved.

Surprise surprise at the shops that wouldn't sell, they wouldn't allow reservations.

As a shift worker who pulls nights I guess I will miss out on the rush.

  • Edit: Dupe post. Sorry.

  • Ringwood, Vic store said no stock till tomorrow.

  • went to blacktown and castle hill, stock was already gone. one of the attendants said the wentworthville store had a few but weren't selling them until tomorrow

  • I am sending the wife down to my local ow at 7am as I will be working..lol..

  • Spoke with Officeworks at Keswick, SA. They advised that they should receive approximately 10 per store and that stores should ONLY be selling them from tomorrow.

  • Hoping that 32" will drop to $150 & 42" down to $250 by Dec xmas sales…

    • Doubt it. Tv prices at the bottom end have been stagnant for 2 years. How much cheaper do you expect them to get?

      • I believe 4K TV will become a norm in 3ish years (much like the current LED). I expect the prices of LED TV will drop to bottom and be eliminated just like LCD TV.

  • Bugger, I had to work early today, I'll have to just try my luck at 3pm this arvo ….

    • No chance mate. My local ow sold out at 7:01 am. I was standing in line to get one before opening.

  • Managed to get one from Glen. Thanks.

  • Thanks OP! Picked 2 from Brisbane CBD store just now! Completed the OZbargainer checklist too to make the deal even more sweet:
    1. Pay in 6 splits of 99$ each using ING and get 5% cash back
    2. Confirmed that returns policy is 30 days for change of mind
    3. Handing the bill to a friend tomorrow who is travelling overseas to claim GST! This May or may not work as my friend will only tell the TRS office that he has checked in both TVs and if they believe him he will get the money back!
There were 2 more left when I bought them. The store person confirmed that there are 11-13 available in Milton in case someone is in Brissy and is feeling the urge! The Milton store opens at 8 so rush now!
Can't wait to get home and test both TVs!

    • +4

Item3: Your friend is 'brave' (read dumb) for taking such a risk. A TRS officer in a bad mood could have a field day with it and get him in all sorts of unnecessary legal hassles. When you check an item in, you get a baggage 'receipt'. It's not that hard to verify it. But hey good luck, I got a fridge receipt too if your friend wants to try.

      • ^^Thanks for the heads up….I have already got 30$ cashback using ING which makes it TRS return for at least one TV :)….will save my friend an act of courage and not worry about TRS!

  • Damn all sold out around St George area nsw. And I was around there at 7.05 . Called other stores after that :( all gone.

    • Thanks for letting us know. Save me the trouble of checking Carlton branch later on.

      • No worries. The guy in carlton told me they sold out yesterday!

  • I managed to get one from gilles plains.

  • Got one from North Sydney. Probably the last one as I didn't see anymore on the shelf besides the display model

  • +2

For those who got one, any comments about features or quality? Can it play movies or mp3s from a usb device?

  • +1

Thanks for the heads up guys… queued up at Noarlunga and they only had 7… managed to snag the second one, they all sold in like 5 minutes as there was 10 people lined up. Excellent xmas present for my mum, she doesn't need more than 50hz and 1080p is awesome for this price.

It does have a headphone jack in the back.

  • +1

Played black ops 2 on it with a playstation, surround sound option on the TV is actually is pretty good!

    • +1

Can you tell us if it's 50 and 60Hz or just 50Hz?

    • +1

Xbox looks good via hdmi. No input lag whatsoever. I was concerned about the response time as it is not stated in the specs sheet.

the remote control is horrible and clunky and tacky. Probably the only downside of the tv.

  • Picked up 1 from OW south Melb just right now. I insisted to make the payment now and pick up later today, but the manager said they just sold 1 in past two weeks and there are 10 left in the shop. And he can put one on hold for me, but I made the payment anyway.

  • Vic park in wa sold out within 10 seconds of opening.
    Got one!

  • +1

5 people waiting at 7am at Kew East.. so Kew's probably gone.. looking forward to testing this out..

  • +5

    Its 50 & 60Hz, Direct Led
    Sound is 10w
    2500:1 Contrast ratio
Does Mkv, mp4, mp3. No sound on some, prob cos codec. WMV didn't work, but only tried 1 file.
Decent colour. Need adjusting depending on source
    Tops for $299

    • Thanks for that.

What are the inputs on the back? The specs state 3x HDMI and 1x AV but I was thinking that seems too low and there must be more. Component, composite, VGA or anything else?

      • +3

All of the above. I'm using vga connection to my PC and audio in jack for sound.
