  • $6.99 at Ikea for a very similar one…

    • smaller and without lid?

    • +2

I bought 2 of Ikea one $10 with lid, very good quality for this price, much more durable than my old bigw one. remind you that it doesn't have and wheel and locking clip for lid, but you can buy clip separated. If used for something light weight, bigger is better, otherwise 45L or smaller is better size.

    • +1

Ikea ones are not as good as the Starmaid (these). The lid clips are fiddly, and they are not as strong - the lid bows more when stacked.

  • Which one is tougher? This one or the home collection rolling 55l ?

ALL the Woolworths/Home Collection branded boxes I've purchased have broken, sometimes within hours or days of purchase. They are flimsy and prone to completely shattering. AVOID! Luckily I only bought a few as a test, but my mother bought ten for use at her shop and they all cracked before she even made it there. Took back for replacement and the replacements all cracked after putting things in them. They are maybe useful for clothes and blankets but nothing else.

      • Thank you!

$6.97 at Officeworks, exactly the same size…

$6.40 each if you buy 5

    • +3

The $6.97 Officeworks ones are rubbish quality, nothing like this Starmaid brand. They are also opaque and have wheels. Totally different product, they simply can't be compared. Poor quality boxes are flimsy and prone to cracking or shattering, as opposed to good quality boxes that can take a beating.

If you want good quality wheeled boxes, check out Supercheap Auto's selection, they're usually about $8-9 but often have sales of 3 for $20. If you need clear containers and don't care about wheels, these Starmaid ones are a good deal right now.

      • -1

        they simply can't be compared.

        both are used for storage
        both have lids
        both are 52 litres…

I reckon they can be compared…

It just goes to show how overpriced Woolies items are in this category… Definitely not worth over $17

        • +13

No offence, but it goes to show how little you know about storage boxes.

Boxes that crack after putting anything more than clothes or blankets in them are no use to some people. Boxes that crack if pulled at the wrong angle or have other boxes stacked on top of them are no use to many people. That's what cheap Woolies, Coles and Officeworks boxes are like.

These Starmaid ones can take a beating, as do ones Supercheap Auto sells. After being filled with stuff they can be stacked with five or more on top of each other without flexing. Cheap ones crack, sag, bend, shatter if trying to do the same. I put a Woolworths Home Collection box on top of another and tried to wheel it across the floor and BOTH boxes cracked. Useless. But I have ten year old SuperCheap Auto boxes that have been kicked around for years and are still going strong. These Starmaid ones are very strong too, just clear and with no wheels.

If you have a weekend stall or a van full of items that need to be boxed, they'll take a beating, and cheap ones will break very quickly. I've seen very expensive tools damaged after people went cheap on storage boxes only to have the box shatter as they moved it, and all their tools fell out onto concrete. Worth spending a bit more sometimes!

        • +6

Yer, we have the starmaid ones here at work (52lt and ~100lt) and we THRASH them. Not one has broken. The plastic is certainly of a higher quality and has much more flex in it. I've got heaps of the cheapies at home and most break after a bit of use because the plastic cracks under a bit of pressure.

        • FYI: Starmaid is "Made in Australia".

        • -8

Handy to know they are made in Australia, overpriced with little to no quality difference. Australian companies make crap products too…

        • +1

phunkyfeelone, have you even owned/tried one of these to compare?

I was in the plastic industries. those cheap one(OW/HomeBrand) uses recycled/mixed plastic material which breaks easily! the local one, use better quality/original material to make these storage container.

so don't compare Suzuki with a Porsche even though they both are "car", and says they are no quality difference…..

        • -1

Yes I have, see my other comments, brittle as anything and sharp edges on broken ones. Ikea ones are great value (every day), and guess what, not made in Australia…

The above comment (which I knew would get negged) - just because it's "made in Australia" doesn't make it top quality. Australian companies can produce rubbish products, and low-cost companies can produce fantastic quality at a much lower price.

I've been in low-cost country sourcing for well know companies, Australian companies complaining that they produce better products than low-cost countries are kidding themselves, there is no proof to support this but keep telling yourself this.

        • Hmm… going through the whole thread, you are the only one that finds the Starmaid brand poor quality.

Either you have it confused with another brand or you were just unlucky and got a bad one that doesn't really represent the whole product line.

        • +2

Also worth noting, is that the comment about being made in Australia was not making a statement about it being better quality.

Given two identical products, at an identical price point, it would be logical to support your local economy. It is therefore worth noting as an important factor when deciding which product to buy.

      • i find the ones JV is referring to not that bad.. lasted me a couple of months so far. to me it seems like along as you don't put very heavy items in the OW ones these do just fine. Otherwise go starmaid for sure

        • I found with cheap boxes like the OW/Target/Woolies brands even putting heavy blankets inside made the sides sag and the tops difficult to put on. If there's more weight in one corner of the box, the lid won't fit well because the box is bent out of shape. Smaller sizes of box might be OK, but the larger sizes are affected. If trying to stack a few on top of each other when they're full, the lids will bend and break very quickly.

For light use they'll make do, but you may as just well spend another $1 and get something decent like these Starmaids. Or wait for a Supercheap Auto 3 for $20 sale if you prefer wheels, it'll be the same price.

  • +1

thx used a $10 off voucher and got free delivery.

    • if you spend over $40

    • what is the $10 voucher?

  • -1

These things are really brittle, and the smashed pieces are as sharp as glass. Learned that the hard way…
Go the Ikea ones, much more durable and always priced well.

    • +2

Are you sure you're not confusing these with another brand 'Starmax' which I did by accident last week? I had some that looked very similar to the Starmaid ones but they were cheap knockoffs and did exactly what you describe. But the Starmaid ones we've used are extremely sturdy.

I haven't had any experience with the Ikea ones. Might check them out next time I visit.

      • I was in Woollies today so thought i'd double check.

The STARMAID boxes were not on special at my local (Highett, VIC), but coud have just been a ticketing error.

I have a garage cupboard full of IKEA ones in various sizes, and still stand by my statements that the IKEA ones are of a higher quality, more durable, and same low price every day.

  • Anyone else having problems with Woolies Online not showing these tubs? Can find their "Home collection" tubs, but searching for Starmaid or going through the "Home & Outdoor » Household » Storage" category gives zilch :-(

      • Cheers Mely, but it comes up with no price or add to cart option. Does have a link to find in store, so it might be that they aren't offering it to specific areas online because they are out of stock (in my case, Melbourne).

        • Everything is normal here, they are still available online in QLD.

        • You have to set your location to see the price, it clearly states this on the page.

        • I already have an account & have ordered before, so it remembers the delivery location. If I switch to Click & Collect, it lets me add to the trolley. But if I switch back to delivery, I can't add it (says "Find in store" only, no add to trolley). So it looks like a restriction on delivering in my area.

  • does anyone knows if this is available in store at the same price?

Was thinking of buying one to test before taking a plunge in ordering another 6.

    Thanks

    • specials (except online only ones) are the same instore, but if your store is out of stock you can get a raincheck

    • They were in my normal woolies catalogue this week.

      • oh ok, thanks for the replies…

I'll check my local store tonight…see if they have some in stock

  • ENTBOOKTENOFF and NOV130 codes give you $15 off for orders > $50.00.

    • input NOV130 give me this:

Sorry, you are not eligible for this coupon promotion. Please call our Customer Service Team on 1800 000 610 for assistance.

      • i think it only works, if the code is tied to your account (ie you were sent the code)

      • Try NOV140 or NOV150 as well if you are not using the ENTBOOKTENOFF code. I tried the codes randomly yesterday on the huggies promo after the code stacking was disabled.

  • +2

We've had some of these for a few years and have had no trouble with cracking or breaks.

    ENTBOOKTENOFF doesn't work anymore

  • +2

    u can try
    tenoffentbook

ordered again, and hopefully they have stock of starmaid this time, and not the substituted ones!

    • If they gave you the cheap woolies ones you can always return them in store as I did.

  • Got mine delivered just now, one of them is already broken. Seems not that durable…and two lids are not made well, with very big bubbles and rough edges.

    • mine was finally delivered yesterday, the quality seem fine but a little dirty.

you sure yours is not "Home Brand"? :-P

      • No. The quality looks worse than Home Collection's.

  • I just step on my 52L Starmaid, I am nearly 60Kg and the side flexes but did not collapse or break. I stepped on the sides of the box with the cover on. Speaking about the cover… the blue lock on mine broke, it breaks and I am not a very careful person I am pretty rough with stuff. I broke quite a few. I bought them a few years ago, hopefully the new ones are stronger.

Yes it's made in Australia, this gets my full support.

  • +1

Never seen the ikea storage boxes but ive tried a few different ones but im happy with the starmaid ones. I have loads of these stacked 4-6 high. Books and heavy stuff in the bottom to play it safe.

Never had a clip on the lid break, but im pretty careful with my stuff.

  • they only had 6 left when i went to pick up my order of 7 today

    .<

  • Not available online anymore.

    • depends on whether your local has updated stock levels in the online shop.

i can order them still here in SA (my local is Hallett Cove 5158)

      • Maybe it's a NSW thing. When I search on 'starmaid' I get 'no results found'. When I search on 'storage' there are only home brand containers. Gone for me.

  • its back on

  • These are Out of stock according to an email I just received from Woolworths for my home delivery order this evening.

    • it depends on what store stock is like. you can get a raincheck instore.

    • when did you place the order?

      • I ordered 7 on Saturday, then another 7 on Sunday, both $10 off and free delivery. Stock levels seem to fluctuate because I couldn't order any online earlier this week.

        • they cancelled my 6 as well

        • +1

Ordered online 14 of them giving them a full week to stock and deliver them.
Came delivery day and wasn't looking forward to woolies emails. First they changed the delivery time. Then came the only can deliver 11 email.
So the driver turns up before the rescheduled time with 5 home collection and 6 store mate tubs.
          Hilarious these guys are.
Anyway I refuse to sign for them and the delivery man said I should've written 'no substitutes ' on the order.
          Whaaaa? I shouldn't need to.
So the woolies operator wants to speak to me to authorise the return and wants to refund my money above all else as she can't deliver items that are 'sold out on special'. Well they weren't sold out as I managed to buy them fine in good faith and they had a week to own up to this error.
This is classic bait and switch that would make Gerry harvey blush…
I'll give them a week to get it together but I already know they will renege on all 14.

        • Sounds similar to mine & other people's experience (from other Woolies deals). Even if you do tick no substitutes, we still got the Home Collection tubs. Emailed them straight away & they refunded, but doesn't help me get the tubs I wanted.
Based on another Woolies deal, turns out you can ask for a raincheck instore that lasts a month. If I had known I would of just done that instead of failing to buy online, then swinging past 3 Woolies to check if in-stock.

        • shows how POORLY MANAGED Woolies online is!
if I am the shareholder I'll be worrying!

how could these clowns manage the Woolies online? they don't know anything about customer service, and surely nothing about stocks allocations or reservation for customer who has PAID 1 week in advanced! if they can't do the job in detail, DON'T DO IT!
