Great deal, but buying bottled water is wasteful :(

    • +1

While I agree, people only concentrate on water bottles. Yes, it would be easily substitutable with tap water, but water bottle in land fill is no better or worse than a coke bottle.

    • +12

      You're right…this isn't a bargain!
I'm gonna stick with the $0.69 I pay per kilolitre. WAYYYY CHEAPER.

      • Where do you live in Adelaide it is around $3 per kl

        • +4

          Brisbane!

        • +1

          Now with free chlorine/fluoride

        • +1

That's so much cheaper. In adelaide we pay around $3 off the top of my head, in the suburb I live in we have what you call recycled water that is only good for gardening and that is still around $2 per kl.

        • +2

$0.69 is not what you really pay for water, when you take into account all the fixed costs before you taste a drop. Even when you takes those out, you're paying way more than that. Have a look at your next water bill.

Brisbane is not a cheap water paradise.

        • "Now with free chlorine/fluoride"

Which makes your teeth healthier and stops bacteria from being able to breed in our water supply.

In turn it saves you from being sick, and broke from dental fees.

        • But fluoride also killed Jesus. Haven't you heard the "truth"? Put on this tinfoil hat and I'll tell you all about it.

      • Brisbane FTW!!

So we've won 8 origins, and we also have cheap water, woot woot lol

        • +1

          "we've won 8 origins"
You won an origin? Which position did you play?

    • +2

      Like buying bottled air…

      • +2

        You mean like this?

        • +1

          LOLLLLLL haha

  • +1

Does this type of packaged water come with a use by date ?

    • -1

It does but its still good years after it expires.

Fact: food is good potentially years past its expiration date, companies put the date on there in hopes that you'll throw it away and purchase more of their product. (npr.org)

      • +9

Fun fact, sometimes there isn't a conspiracy and they did go out of date.

        • +3

You mean that beef mince I bought three years ago isn't good anymore?!

        • Its fine… don't eat the green bits.. :-(

      • +1

        eXtremist…

  • +21

They should send all these bottles to The Philippines.

    • -1

The Philippines needs money, not random collections of stuff from around the world.

      • +2

        The Philippines needs money

"Philippines survivors of Typhoon Haiyan face battle for food and water"
        http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/philippines-survi…

Great idea mate, what are they supposed to do with money? Eat it?

not random collections of stuff from around the world.

You class bottled drinking water after a severe natural disaster that has severed water supplies as "random collections of stuff"?

Can someone please decipher what this guy is writing here? Please. Somebody.

        • Proper disaster management can make much better use of money than physical donations. It allows them to source goods regionally, usually more cost-effective and more efficient distribution, as well as restarting the economy.

        • +1

Don't disagree, but it takes time for that to kick into gear… basic necessities run short in the days after a large event like what has occurred.

        • +2

Did you forget we are talking about the Philippines ??

corruption in the Philippines is a very real problem.

        • +1

It's now much more common these days for aid organisations to specifically request money rather than aid.

Groups like the Red Cross are integrated and experts in disaster management and are very good at stretching every dollar they receive. Not only that, it allows them to shift resources very quickly. Physical donations have actually been a problem in recent years because it's hard to anticipate where they come from so it can become very inefficient. For example, recently in America they actually called for people not to donate food and water because they had no means to transport and distribute it.

If you want to talk quick response, there's likely nothing by way of physical donations that would reach there quicker than what they are sourcing regionally.

It sounds counter-intuitive and even ungrateful, but they are very good at what they do and it is still the best way to help.

        • +2

"Did you forget we are talking about the Philippines ??

corruption in the Philippines is a very real problem."

This is very true, and sad. When people donate money to 'charitable services' they should really ask the company how much of their dollar will actually go to helping people, and how much goes towards marketing, salaries, lawyer fees, import duties, ect. That doesn't even include the corruption afterwards and also every step of the way.

If you are ever accosted by someone shaking a tin and you want to give money, please don't, unless you are 100% sure (after researching the organisation) that the charity is non-profit and has ethical standings. But then remember that you wanted to give money to charity and give it directly to those in need at the first possible convenience.

        • +1

I agree, it is very hard to bank food donations in your secret Swiss numbered account.

  • +1

I'm surprised nobody has come up with a concentrate for this to reduce the bottle size…

    • +12

This is concentrate. Just add water to dilute it.

    • hmm.. that's a good idea.. smaller bottle with two chambers - one for the hydrogen and one for the oxygen.. plus you'd need an igniter to start the chemical reaction to combine the two. it could easily fit in your pocket! you'd get water and heat (and a lot of noise) out of the one bottle.. kids would think it extremely cool.

      • And that would definitely not reduce bottle size. You wouldnt even get liquid state H20 if you only have a pocket size bottle of oxygen and hydrogen.

        • +1

Personally, I wouldn't even bother with Hydrogen and Oxygen. I'd just carry around a bunch of protons, neutrons and electrons and make my own…

  • +1

Are the bottles the cheap thin plastic or the hard plastic?

I hate the thin plastic that some mount franklin bottles have

    • According to their website, the flimsy bottles use 35% less plastic. On the bottle, it says that you are doing your part for the environment…

      • -2

I honestly couldn't give a stuff about using less plastic. Customers before environment!

        • dude, you should see the shores on some of the hawaiian islands. plastic doesn't biodegrade. it breaks down in to smaller and smaller pieces. there are literally beaches of plastic sand.

there is a 700,000 sq km patch in the pacific ocean where all the plastic that gets in to the ocean accumulates. it is an environmental catastrophe.

pollution affects the food chain and ends up in the food that you eat.

        • Don't care. I re-use all water bottles I purchase for a month or so, then throw them out. Where they will be buried, effecting no one.

  • -1

Limit of 6 kills it for me, can't be bothered wasting liters of fuel getting to this place to pick up 6 bottles of water. If it was a carton of 24 I'd make the trip.

    • have you tried multiple orders? or creating a couple of accounts?

  • I keep getting logged out and getting this:
"Your session has timed out due to inactivity.
To prevent unauthorised access to your account we have cleared your shopping cart." >_<

  • +1

cant see this being worth it

you can buy a carton for $3-$4.00 at the local marts

i agree buying bottled water is crap but i have a carton in the boot of my car so i can grab a bottle whenever i'm out and need a drink and cant find a vendor and/or dont feel like paying $3 for a bottle

    • +1

how many units are in the carton you mention?

Coles sells an 8 pack for $8.66.

Your post suggests that you are buying 24 units for $3 or $4…… I doubt that.

  • +3

Might not be the most popular thing to say… but IMHO, this is not a deal. Water can be obtained cheaper from a tap. Bottled water is the biggest waste of money. Not to mention the environmental concerns with littering and landfill.

    • +1

Martijn and Scrooge - you obviously live in a city where the tap water is fairly potable. Some of us don't and to us this is a deal. I don't think your neg is valid, just because you don't agree with buying bottled water.

I have concerns about the wastage and landfill as well, but I do think this is a good deal.

      • I don't think your neg is valid, just because you don't agree with buying bottled water.

Martijn clearly stated that the -ve is because water can be obtained cheaper elsewhere…

      • That's a fair point.

Just for a reference I live in S.E. Melbourne and get 30ppm 7.2ph from the tap. Buying bottled water round my area is just bad for the environment and wallet.

  • +2

I paid $3.50 for a bottle of water from the vending machine at uni because I was thirsty and didnt bring water with me.

    • -1

And there was no tap around?

      • +1

Nope. Tape water isnt cold though, on a warm 30degree day.

        • Still around 17C…
Plus all unis that I've been to have bubblers somewhere.

        • -1

          Tape water isnt cold though

use the water cooler in the staff room…

        • sydney uni ?
if its sydney uni there are cold water available for students for free

        • Pretty sure that's every uni, everywhere.

    • +1

Did you fill it up with tap water and take it with you next day ?

      • yep! I did!

Will not tap water, filtered water. or boiled water.

        • +1

Boiling water can actually increase the levels of heavy metals and contaminants - some of the water evaporates, thereby increasing the concentration of toxins in remaining water.

        • Do you live in Australia?

are there places here where you need to boil the drinking water?

  • +5

A true Ozbargainer would claim the 10c Refund at SA/NT Collection Depots on the empty bottle making the total price 7c per bottle. Definitely a bargain!

  • +1

Max order is now just 2 bottles

  • not worth it unless you live close to a store. Not a real bargain.

  • -2

I can only downvote bottled water, I can't think of a situation where anyone should buy except for when randomly caught out and with no other option, water from the tap is next to free, better for you and better for the environment.

    • I love being negged by factless people who can't be bothered with putting their point of view across, it's awesome. You can't neg a post without a comment but you can neg a person. What's up with that?

  • +1

Where the f is Mt Franklin anyway?

    • +1

      Somewhere in Australia, I hope.

      • +1

I am pretty sure it's fictional. Also I don't thing the term "spring water" means anything except "not sea water". Friggin coke marketing bullcrap (Amatil owns My Franklin)

The bottom line is they bottle what comes out of our tap and sell it to mugs for ridiculous money. There is seriously nothing stupider (not even tge word stupider!)

        • "Neither the source of the water or any historical link with Mount Franklin, Victoria are mentioned on the Mount Franklin water website." -wiki

Same with the Coke fruit juice "Goulburn Valley". Does it have anything to do with the place?

      • +1

It used to be in Hawthorne, Victoria, but I hear that it's making the move to Sydney.
