Bunch of FREE (or Discounted Magazines) from The Google Play Newsstand

2680

Google are giving away a bunch of mags to promote their new Newsstand service. Good mix of magazines - some are only discounted though and not free but I grabbed myself a few issues.

  • T3 one of my favorites is free. Thanks for that!

It's good that a lot of magazines are free.
I don't tend to buy magazines anymore cause I feel like 80% of the pages are ads…

    • +4

      80-20 rule everywhere

  • +5

So they're asking for my CC details, does this mean I'll need to login before next month and cancel the subscriptions to anything I get today?

    • I think you just click "Add", seems to be the equivalent of buying a single issue

    • +1

It's standard that App Stores take credit card details before a purchase, even a free one. You'll also likely get a small charge on your credit card and a refund soon after.

    • +4

I put my $50 Visa gift card (with $4 balance left on it) as credit card payment. These gift cards are realy good for this type of situations.

  • Two free Mac/iOs-oriented magazines, and nothing for Android. Weird.

    • Sounds right to me. How many people shopping in the Android Newsstand are apple fans anyway?

  • Thanks good find

  • same question as above- you need cc details (google wallet), it states "payment begins once free trial ends"- i take it it will autodeduct money as soon as next issue is out??

    • the add feature adds only that issue, it adds it as $0.00, so unless you've subscribed it shouldnt buy the next issue

      Cool story

        Bro

        • needs more DRAGONS!!!

    • +9

Don't be so quick, I think I saw Tinfoil Hat Enthusiast magazine listed…

I do love a bit of righteous indignation.

I get all my magazine for free anyhow. Pity they're terrible to read on a 5" screen :p

  • Thanks bro

  • How do I get a free mag without giving my credit card details?

    • +1

I just used an old debit card that I don't normally use with like a $1 on it.

      • -2

        You have a credit card with a $1 limit, or does "like a $1" mean "like a $1000" ?

        • +2

he said "debit card". Its a card with access to a savings account can be used as a credit that takes from savings instead of credit

        • +2

          Ahh, misread that - thanks.

  • Cheers OP, grabbed T3 and Edge.

  • Ta. I hope these free ones that ask for credit card don't then charge for future ones.

Anyone looking for a good magazine app for iOS have a look at Readr. I got a 3 month trial recently through Stacksocial. Lots of magazines and its cheap to subscribe. Also I think you get some free access every month.

  • +3

they want you to save your credit card details on google play
increasing the chances you buy something else elsewhere

    Cough Torrent Cough Nzb hmm

    if only…

  • +8

Thanks OP, I now have a pile of free magazines I'll probably never read. :p

    • +10

To go with my other pile on Zinio….

  • -6

Is it just me or can they not be downloaded after "purchased"? I don't want some shitty online viewer or DRM'd phone app. I want a PDF. Anyone know how to do this?

  • Thanks !

  • Thanks. Grabbed some of them. It does state something about subs will start after free trial/period ends. So might be on the safe side to cancel any subs after 1 month. (Set a google event alarm :P )

Dont want to give my credit card details… are there any boobs, that may sway my decision.

  • Anyone tried this with this deal http://www.getcreditcardnumbers.com/
    EDIT: Didn't work.

  • +1

Great deal, but I really dislike Google Newstand Reader or whatever it's called. I read on my Asus tablet and every time I move the page it goes out of focus and takes a few seconds to refocus. I am going back to Zinio. Also, not sure if it has anything to do with having just upgraded to Android 4.4.

Apple does the same thing with Apple ID and iTunes store. What makes the difference?

I smell troll and a Apple fanboy here

Should not neg op for this. Go neg google or back to Apple.

It doesn't charge you anyway, and press add would not subscribe

      • +2

Screw Apple too, just because everyone is doing something doesn't mean it's right.

        • +1

I agree, you shouldn't need to provide your credit card details unless you're actually paying for something.

  • +3

Could definitely go for some Crotchet Today magazine.

  • +2

I added my credit card, purchased all the free editions, then removed credit card from Google Wallet. Magazines still work (I made sure to download offline versions).

    • How do you download them?

      • +1

If you look in the buying section there are 3 little dots you have to click on to get the download option. Can't believe they don't push to my device or show up in my magazines till I download them from the buy section. It's weird, and annoying.

  • Thanks OP !

  • +1

NB, you can read these magazines in Chrome too. I suspect any webbrowser should also work fine.

    • told me to use android app or chrome when I used firefox on my pc :( oh well….. :)

  • it doesn't work. It says 'purchase currency not supported' despite $0.00.

    sigh…

  • You can buy with your Telstra credit sim btw, even if there's $0.00 and past the plan date.

  • Why don't they accept Paypal !!! :(

    • +1

Because Google operates a competitor to PayPal?

  • i dont wanna put my cc details in there…. :(

  • I'm guessing they are only 'free' as part of the 14 day trial that accompanies the magazines?

    • No, these issues are simply free, to promote them.

You do not need to press subscribe, which would activate a subscription and begin charging you per issue.

      • +1

I hadn't set up my Google wallet (still haven't) so when I clicked 'Add' (not subscribe) it still looked like it was taking me through a subscription process including taking my credit details and full name etc. when I already had a Google account.

  • When I added a few free magazines, it sent me email confirmation too. But I can't see anything in Newsstand under MyMagazines.

  • Now how do you delete magazines from Newsstand?

    • There should be a pin on the cover of the magazine.

      • That's if you want to keep a mag for offline reading.

There's no way to actually delete magazines from your Newsstand App.
