  what aspects of performance are affected by low ram? is this evident all the time? (ie, making calls and sending/receiving texts?) or just when you try to run intensive apps?

      on a pc ram will determine boot and program load speeds. large programs that require more ram will be more affected by the need to use a swap file than small programs that do not take much physical ram.

      hence the question.

      once the device is booted, does this threshhold affect basic operation of the phone, or is it only evident doing multi-tasking with lots of memory intensive apps?

        Half a gig of RAM these days generally mean a slow and frustrating experience but for this price plus depending on who uses it and how it will be used, could be worthwhile

        If you don't run too many background apps, and keep your installations minimal then it should be fine.

        Google has said they are optimising the next version of Andriod to run well with devices using as low as 512MB of RAM so it might not be that noticeable

        Problem is you can't have many services running in the background with such low RAM such as account sync, Facebook, email and many others that some people may consider as basic functions will cause slowdowns

        And as soon as you load up Chrome and start browsing with a few tabs open your RAM and performance will drop dramatically

        So maybe Google can do some magic but I wouldn't count on it

        You have pretty much nil probability on getting an official Kit Kat firmware on a cheap china phone like this.

        Could try XDA but generally comes down to how popular the device is on the modding community.

    All of the above , In fact it's just the general sluggishness of the phone and the time it takes for the phone to respond to touch. Everything gets bogged down, I'd get a nexus 4 with 2 GB ram only if it had an external SD card…

  God..Please my fellow Ozbargainers, Gumtree a nexus phone or similar 1.5 year old Android phone. May end up being a few dollars more but hell…..even for abused, dropped, bashed Motorola / Samsung / LG / Asus / HTC will be so much better.

  I should think with android_unofficial 442 indicated a month or two away, I will prefer wait for a new, MTK-Turbo with 5.5"/ppi ips 267 minimum (this is ppi 220)-china on board with at least ⅔ of the Note 3's wonderful 3 gb, and also Cyanogen-11 would be just fantastic too. OfferAU200.
