AVG Internet Security 2014 1-User 1-Year License FREE

360

AVG Internet Security 2014 for free, it isn't the best antivirus out there… I probably wouldn't put it in the "good" category, but free - nothing to complain about.

Some T&C:

This is a 1-user 1-year license, for home and business use

  • Please take note the way AVG runs freebies is they provide extended "trials" instead of licenses. This freebie is really a 365 day extended trial of AVG Internet Security 2014 instead of an actual 1-year license. In terms of features and protections, there are no differences between a trial and a real license — you get all the same features, updates, and protection. The difference arises in who can install it. If you have used AVG Internet Security in the past, then you might not be able to install an extended trial and thus won't be able to get this freebie. (If you haven't used AVG Internet Security in the past, then you can get this freebie.) That is why AVG does it this way: they want to attract new users with freebies, but don't necessarily want to give a free year to existing users.

  • Free updates for one year

  • No free tech support
  • Must be downloaded, installed, and registered before this offer is over
  • May not be resold
  • No refunds and exchanges; if you are having trouble activating or registering, please ask for help

You are not getting pay to use it?

    • unfortunately not, but better than having to pay for it!

  • AVG is great. I've been using it for years and never had a problem - it caught quite a few dodgy sites and potential malware.

      Never mind

    • Yeah the problem is aside from anything else is it has a shockingly bad rate of false positive detections.

I'm really over using AV that is any more intrusive than it has to be so for me free is too high a price on this application.

      • +1 Yeah, I'm starting to think that way. I've used Avast for years, along with Spybot Search & Destroy, and Malware Bytes Anti-Malware. Then I did a manual scan last week and found about three dozen virii - which was great the programs found them - but why should I have to do a MANUAL scan to find them!?

After some research I think I'm going to pay for Kapersky. (That's a big step for me, considering the last software I paid for was Putt Putt Saves The Zoo a decade or more ago.) It had a low rate of false positives, a high virus detection rate, and lesser impact on system resources.

Just be aware you get harassment message popups for renewing like 3 months in.

  • Anyone want to give a testimonial on how well AVG performs? I have used just about every suite but not AVG. Avast, Kaspersky, Bitdefender, Avira, Norton 360, Mcafee, ESET.

None have been perfect. I have gripes with all of them. False positives is a big issue on almost all of them, and the other problem is how resource intensive they are.

One product might perform really good and I love it.. until a major update changes everything and now it's slow, and I switch to another product which performs better.. until a major update does the same thing to that one. But a future update might make one of these good again. I haven't been able to settle on one product for very long.

The only major products I haven't tried yet are AVG and Trend Micro.

What do people think of AVG?

I want to get a code for this so I can try it when my current subscription expires, but it seems you have to install and register it very soon, and I don't want to do that just yet because I have quite some time left on my current internet security.

    • I still remember when last time I was using AVG via free license promotion like this, their automatic update put my PC into boot-up BSOD status. They apologised about the situation later and published some emergency patch but was pretty difficult to handle it. Of course, uninstalled immediately after recovery.

    • Trend Micro is very heavy, using avg wouldn't say its really reliable but good enough if you are tech savvy.

      • Does TM produce a lot of false positives?

It's annoying how files on your HDD from 7 years ago which were never flagged as malware up till now, but with the latest update, the AV you've been using all this time has now decided it's Malware and automatically quarantined it for you.

  • Other than less features, is the free version of AVG I've always used any worst at detecting viruses than this "paid" version of AVG?

    • No, same anti-virus program.

    • A lot of free antivirus detect alright, but they require you doing a manual scan. Who wants to be running scans yourself every day.

    its spyware

  • I've used a few different packages in the past and always come back to Nortons. You can always get a much cheaper than retail versions from places like Ebay for around $30 per year. I do computer support, most people that have been hit by a virus / scam ware have been using AVG so I cant recommend it. I've even had fully paid version users getting caught out with AVG.

      Yes I agree with you.
      I always use kaspersky…

Check out your anti virus real world test results from respected av comparatives right here, this is october 2013:

    http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php

    Green is good.

Maybe best to also read other info here from same site:

    http://www.av-comparatives.org/dynamic-tests/

    • Looks like it's somewhat dependent on where each of the companies are with their testing. At a high level Kaspersky, Trend and BitDefender seem to alternate with who is best in any given month if you look back at the historical real world test results.

Ive followed the link and installed it all.

but im only getting 30 days trial?

    • Same here. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling but still only get 30 days. :/

  • thoughts on whether antivirus is enough or internet security is worth the investment?

    • I think it depends on how aware the user is. If you have Automatic Updates configured to install automatically (as well as Adobe Flash and Java), and don't download anything you shouldn't then Anti-Virus probably isn't needed.

Mac users almost never install Anti-Virus, as it has never really been needed; but Windows users still tend to use AV due to the serious nature of the security problems that Windows had 10 years ago.

PC's do run faster without AV. But if in doubt, use it.

      • it's worrying that mac users feel they are immune and don't need AV because osx viruses are on the rise

        • ignorance is bliss… until they get malware ;D

    • I don't believe antivirus is enough. I haven't downloaded any pirated software for years, don't use Internet Explorer, don't have my email set to download or view email automatically… and probably a bunch of other precautions I forget at the moment. Yet I still had 3 dozen virii and trojans recently. The only other place I could have got them was via webpages with malicious code.

I'm probably going to buy Kapersky after refusing to pay for software for years.

  • problem is when these free AV eventually becomes the V itself, had a hard time uninstalling Avast! as it refuses to remove itself from windows :O

best is a clean Windows installation and some common sense when browsing.

    • Removal tools for a few anti virus programs are available here:

Scroll down the page to section 2 and follow directions

      http://support.kaspersky.com/7580

      • Thanks for this. Probably need this soon, LOL.

  • It's free because they collect your data and sell it.
It also slows your PC down.

    • What data have they got to sell, I think google skying on everything you browse is more creepy
and most of the PC are fast enough to take an AV program now… no more 2005
