As an aside Event Cinemas have recently devalued the Cinebuzz Program where you can no longer redeem your points after 5pm on a Friday or Saturday night for VMax or Gold Class screenings.
So as the OP said use a mixture of Cinebuzz points, Telsta/RAA/etc discount tickets, and discount Gift Cards to get the best deal.
what are points used for ?
100 points = free film. You normally earn 10 points per film.
I think you earn 100 points per 2D film, and 1000 points for a free 2D film. VMax, 3D, and Gold Class earn more points.

Points get accumulated every time you visit the cinema and book/purchase using your Cinebuzz account. The number of points vary depending on what type of film you see (2D/3D or VMax/Gold Class) and once you have accrued enough points you're able to spend them on a movie session.
I see a Movie essentially every fortnight with the missus and we've been given the VIP status Cinebuzz card which gives us more points. We get a free movie every 6 or 7 we see and as uni students it's music to our ears :D
