For those who missed it earlier in the month, this is back in stock and at the lowest price ever on Amazon.com (US$15 cheaper than the previous low). Excellent price for a 2TB USB 3.0 portable hard drive (no external power supply needed).

EDIT: Price now up from $84.99 to $99.

This is also a great option if you require a 2.5" 2TB bare drive for your laptop/computer/media centre/gaming console since the drive has a standard SATA connector, unlike the equivalent WD My Passport products where the USB is integrated into the drive. Just be aware the drive height is 15mm, so it won't fit into some confined spaces (e.g. most laptops). Model number for the bare drive is MQ01ABB200.

The Toshiba 2TB Canvio Connect model is available for US$5 more (also the lowest price ever for this model). Difference between the Basics and Connect is that the Connect comes with a year extra (US) warranty, some bundled software and has a glossy enclosure: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CGUMS48

Correct me I'm wrong but there's no warranty?

    • +5

No, there's no Australian warranty here. If warranty is important to you, then the cheapest local options on staticice are currently $160+ — although there have been some sales recently at $140+. Of course, if you're intending to open the enclosure to repurpose the bare drive, you'd be voiding the warranty anyway, so it doesn't matter if it's local stock or not. :)

Amazon's customer service tends to be quite good if something goes wrong, though. If the drive is dead on arrival, Amazon will pay for return postage and issue you with a refund or replacement. They might be also be willing to refund/replace if something goes wrong further down the track.

      • Feel uneasy since hdd can fail within a week.

        • +5

If you feel uneasy about it pay the additional $60 for a local drive. Simple.

$149 at DSE at the moment with 3 year local warranty http://www.dicksmith.com.au/usb-hard-drives/discover-one-of-…

  • +2

1 USD = 1.1408240118 AUD…pfff what a rip off, but even then 106.99 is a good price for 2TB portable hard drive.

  • +3

You should always buy it in USD with 28degrees, rather than letting Amazon doing the currency.

  • So if it fails in 1 year time etc. we can send back to USA?

    How long is the warranty?
in oz we get 3 years

    USA = 1 year?

    • Pretty sure you can — at your expense — going by what I've read on here and Whirlpool. But I've never had to deal with a warranty return with Amazon before (despite many purchases over the years), so I can't speak from direct experience.

  • Just to be clear, this is a different model than the one posted few days back. That was Toshiba Canvio "Connect" 2TB vs this Toshiba 2TB Canvio "Basics". (Connect vs Basics)

That being said, I think the difference is only in the bundled software, hardware looks the same!

    • +1

basics was on special too. before the connect one. I got two myself, disappointed they are cheaper now but cannot win at every deal.

    • I forgot about the Connect deal posted recently! I believe that's also currently at the lowest price ever, so I'll add it to my post: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CGUMS48

The only difference between the two is the (crappy) bundled software and glossy case on the Connect.

    • +1

      The other difference is…

Connect - "Includes Toshiba 2-Year Limited Warranty"
Basic - "Gives you peace of mind with Toshiba's 1-year Limited Warranty"

The price difference is $5 USD more for an extra years warranty but, it still needs to be shipped back to Amazon at your expense.

      • Good spotting, I didn't notice the warranty difference. Added that difference to the main post.

  • Excellent Deal. Thank you. I am going to open the case and use it as an internal hard drive in my laptop so I am very happy with this deal.

    EDITED to correct typing mistake.

    Price rise to $100 :-(

  • Eventually pulled the trigger last night. Thanks OP

  • I got 2 of these last time and they've been great so far

  • +1

    Expried?

    • Price has gone up by US$15, which is still the second cheapest it's ever been at Amazon. :)

    • Yeah you'd think so, but apparently not.

      • +2

Well, I'm sorry for not marking it as expired but I think it's still a pretty good deal even at US$15 more, and some people might still be interested in buying.

28 days ago this exact same drive at $99 (the current price point) received 94 positive votes, so people clearly thought it was a good deal back then: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/121540

I'm happy for the mods to mark the deal as expired, though.

  • Just a heads up, the 2TB Canvio Connect model is back in stock at US$89.99 (excluding shipping): http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CGUMS48

  • Has anyone received theirs yet?
