  • Great price!!

I have the black version, they're quite excellent phones.

      Why would anyone get white!?

Is this some Gen Y thing where you wear massive headphones meant for home use in public to show off and make a fashion statement?

      • Where does it say anyone is using them in public?

        • are they too big for public? I would use them for gym?

        • Not too big but I'm not so sure they will stay on your head when exercising

      • Um… because people like it

      • +2

Headphone displays in some stores have dedicated mirrors next to them. There are definitely a good number of people who base their headphone choice on fashion.

  • Thanks op. Just ordered the red model, actually the cheapest colour/style M50 option on Amazon- totalled USD $119.97, and my personal favourite in terms of colour scheme (although I would probably prefer straight rather than coiled cable).

  • +6

Although these headphones sound great - especially for that price - I highly recommend that you do NOT get the white ones. I have a white pair and they get dirty pretty quickly. You will end up having to clean them regularly which gets really annoying. If I had to choose again, I would't hesitate to get the black ones.

    • totally agree, have to wipe my white ones down after each use.

      • Thirded

    • Why did you get the white pair originally?

      • I thought it would look cool because white seems to be the 'in' colour and I didn't know they would get this dirty. Also they were 50 cents cheaper when I was purchasing mine. In proper OzBargain fashion (no pun intended), I picked the white one.

  • ~$140 AUD Delivered

  • edit: didn't see previous comment ^
blacks at $140 including shipping and conversion, not a crazy-crazy deal

  • how do these compare to the logitech ue6000? find them to be uncomfortable, and not convinced by the sound..

    • ATH-M50 are the best purchase I've ever made. I wear them for extended periods of time and feel little to no discomfort.

    • +1

I would not get them with the expectation they will be more comfortable than the UE6000. The ue6000 is a bit heavy but otherwise is more comfortable than the M50, which has stronger clamping pressure and is less breathable.

Here's my comparison over at Head Fi with the M50 and UE6000 included!

  • Is the coiled cable better or straight ones?

    • +1

the straight one is very long, it doesn't make sense unless using it with a media setup around the TV and you in the couch.

    • I have a set of each and I prefer the coiled, coiled means the cable stays out of the way but can feel heavy and cumbersome when walking around.

I really like the look and how the coiled cable stay untangled.

The straight ones are long and get tangled easy like the other comment mentions.

These are excellent headphone! I highly recommend these, very very good value for money.

  • Quick one - in comparison to Skullcandy Aviators..?

    • +6

The brand Skullcandy should tell you these will $#!+ all over them.

      • +1

err, no, because I wouldn't judge a product by its manufacturer's name alone.

        • In this case, I would.

    • +1

At this price, these are better.

  • Great headphones at a great price, I got some of these exact colour and style from Japan a while back. For the price these are a great deal.

These are monitor style headphones so they try to give a truer representation of sound across all ranges of the audio playing through them.

Here is a pretty glowing review…

Once upon a time (maybe more than ten years ago), I wandered into a music store and essentially bought random headphones. I could have got any crap - I had no idea and luckily, those headphones were the audio technica m30s. Headphones that are still with me now - downgraded to EDrum duty - but they served me for around 10 years and were decent.

So one can only assume the M50s are a worthy upgrade to already decent phones.

I now also own the AD900 and AD900X.

You probably cannot go wrong with Audio Technica.

At a $126 price tag, these headphones are overhyped.

    • AT tend to be good value for money. definitely better than the beats crap anyway

      Kudos at honouring your username

  • Is it a good idea to use Amazon's Currency Converter, or does it work out better to pay in US dollars?

  • I got mine just before at 122 delivered

  • Note they are a closed back design, so for studio use that does affect bass reproduction. I found it fairly tricky mixing bass tracks on them. If I was to purchase phones for producing over again I would go with open back. That said I use the ATH-M50's on my V-Drum kit and they do a great job for that and are very comfortable, I don't regret buying them. I got the straight cable for the extra length and less weight hanging off them, and it's fine for me using at home but very long, if you want them portable/walkman style go coiled.

    • Opens would be very tough, too - as they are generally pretty light for bass. Ad900 and Ad900x, here.

  • Cannot recommend these enough. I paid $160 for mine, worth every penny. Also very comfortable. They're kinda big, still portable though.

  • Some find the over ear clamping pressure excessive. I don't mind it at all and can listen to them for hours.
The pleather pads were getting a bit hot and sweaty for me though, so I replaced them with some velvet ones. Much better.
They do have a small sound stage and there is a distinct peak in the treble. They do have excellent sound reproduction though and will highlight faults in poorly digitally encoded music (not a fault of the headphone).

Overall, very good for the price. I use these all the time except for when exercising (Sport-Fi M6P Memory Wire In-Ear for that).

A search on the net will show you some mods you can do to these, like a detachable cable (done it, worth it), and conversion to open cans (considering it for the improved sound stage).

    • Hi tomlut, where did you get the velvet earpads from?

Are they specifically made for M50?

    • I find the pads way too hot and sticky for summer, mix that with the tightness of the clamping and these just aren't for me. Great sound though but I prefer the open ear design.

        Order Total: $113.97

  • Bought these as a second pair of headphones for work/commuting. I guess they're good bang for buck headphone for that price but thought they sounded quite dull and not as comfortable as my beyerdynamic dt 250 (more expensive obviously).

Just found out these are now $170~ or so http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-DT-250-80OHM-Lightweight-…, I paid $300 for them years ago. If you're fussy with your sound I recommend paying bit more for something better than ATH-M50.

  • I have the ATH-M50S (black, straight cable) version of these. Excellent sound, but my left speaker stopped working last week. I bought them earlier this year from Amazon. Does anybody know the process/pain/likelihood of getting a replacement from Amazon under warranty?

    • First step would be to contact amazon?!?!?

  • It says cannot ship to your location?

  • Hi everyone, I can't seem to purchase these as Amazon said there was a problem with my order - they can't ship to my Australian address. Am I doing something wrong?
