    You bet - just for 3DS. You might want to consider getting him a 3DS (or 2DS) and Pokemon X or Y. They're amazing games and if your son loves Pokemon, will LOVE these new ones.

    Gamefreak has said that they do not really like the paid dlc scene.
    This is a completely different game (storage system) which will support future generations and allow you to transfer from previous generations, the fee is to pay for running the servers.
