WTF you don't think kitchenaid have reliable motors? How do you come up with that?

    • +1

I've heard that at least 60% of all statistics are made up.

    • +1

dunno where you made that up from, but they are arguably the best kitchen mixers you can buy (apart from original mix masters?).

I've used ours a lot it is extremely good quality you can tell by how heavy and solid the thing is. All attachments are well made and the motor is extremely strong. You could drop that thing from a decent height and it would only break your floor tiles. My wife and I have mixed dough, cakes, pastry, meringue etc no problems. Only issue is the price, we got ours via westpac altitude points so felt better on the wallet ;)

Depends on what you use your kitchenaid for, the motor power is only 300W, it is good for lighter procedures such as whipping cream, beating eggs whites etc. It isn't the best for kneading dough, not enough motor power.

      • +1

Really? Do you own one? Have you used it to knead dough? I do, and it definitely has enough power to knead dough i've done it plenty of times. Pizza dough and bread dough. Having said that, i use the "5 minute artisan bread" recipe for sour dough which doesn't require kneading at all so I don't need the kitchenaid to knead much anymore. Anyway, to say it doesn't have enough power is just false IMO.

Yes i do, however i have since upgraded to a Breville. I bake bread 2-3 times per week, I find the motor becoming very hot on occasions where I knead large amounts of dough and have it on for a while, it overheats fairly easily. Haven't had this same problem with Breville. I have to turn the machine off, wait for the motor to cool down completely before I can use it again. This is my personal experience, it's not indicative of all Kitchenaid experiences.

Geezus Wired00. Settle down. Do you have shares in Kitchen Aid or something?

Choice rates both the Kitchen Aid (which is owned by Whirlpool) and the Kenwood equivalents highly. Both rate highly in reliability also. However the Kitchen Aid does only have a 300w motor. It's not a criticism per se, just a fact. If you need more power (which is required for larger volumes or more viscose mixing ingredients) you'll need more juice and probably have to go Kenwood (which peak at about 1.5kW I think). However, for domestic purposes, both will probably be suitable.

        • Sorry i just re-read my post i did sound a bit ridiculous. Must have been having a Kitchen aid loving moment :)

        • Don't stress it Wired00. What would OzB be if we were not all so passionate about our products and bargains.

I also forgot to mention that (IMO) the Kitchen Aid is the best looking of the mixers. Kenwoods get increasingly utilitarian as they go up in wattage (and the KMix look like someone mixed a highlighter with the letter "G").

Hmm, depends what you use it for. Kitchenaids the issue is not the motor, per se, but the gears. KitchenAids have plastic gears and they can have a tendency to strip if you use them heavily for breads - especially large quantities or low hydration loaves (check thefreshloaf.net for many stories).

I am a very active home baker, and bought a Bosch Universal plus for approx 400 several years ago. It is belt-operated (no gears to strip), has a larger capacity, and has many more adaptor plug ins like meat grinder etc.

It is absolutely not as pretty as a KitchenAid and would not handle smaller loads as well, but for my needs it is better.

More generally, I think it's hard to dispute that part of the price you pay for a KitchenAid is having the brand name. There are many mixers on the market of similar quality and power that are cheaper, but each to their own. I feel the same way about Apple, and they seem pretty popular!

I bought one for my wife last christmas online from. Harrods. Was about $450 shipped.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/87007

Havent seen a deal like it since! Great machine, which all the accessories weren't so expensive!

Edit- just using that old link, harrods have it shipped for $600! (Remember to remove VAT if looking). Comes up as £324 shipped to Sydney.
Just need a plug converter as they use the same power rating as us.

  • Almost bought one for $299 at Macy's in San Francisco a few years back - but couldn't convince myself I'd get it through airport security as carry-on. Apparently someone else did just that earlier in the day, removing all the parts from the box and putting them into a rucksack! I can only imagine what happened at the airport…

  • If you're looking into mixers, also checkout the Breville Scraper Mixer Pro plugged by Heston Blumenthal. Cheaper and does the basics well. Several YouTube videos show that the motor is not as robust as the KA but still a fine mixer nonetheless.

Prices for the KA attachments are outrageous too.
