Sony RX100 $479 + Free Shipping

70

Not one to boast about a Kogan listing, but this is the cheapest that the camera has been ever (postage included).

Kogan removed the free shipping shortly after I posted this, sorry. I'll remark as active if they decide to put the free shipping back onto it.

The RX100 is well regarded as one of, if not the best true compact camera (actually fits in a pocket) on the market today.

A great video review here:

Obsolete replaced by RX 100 II

    • +6

Yeah, about a year ago. There's a few reasons the original still moves more units than the successor; The new ii has almost a stop of increased low light performance at the cost of sharpness (do you shoot more in low light, or do you like sharper images across the board?) and also it's $200+ more expensive. But if a tiltable screen, 24p recording, increased low light performance and a hot shoe adaptor are worth $200, then by all means go for the mark 2.

It's a deal killer without the hot shoe adaptor.

        • +3

And what's the point of a hot shoe adaptor on a pocket camera exactly? Would you like to put a hulking flash on top? How about a $500 EVF? You like to put down the camera but it sounds like you have no idea what you are talking about.

Now if you said tiltable screen I would have agreed its worth the extra money, but hot shoe adaptor? You lost it there.

      • And WiFi..remote shutter CIA phone plus more for the mk2…there is no cost in sharpness as a setting can be changed if you like additional sharpness in the mk2, but many pros complained about the loss in detail by the mk1 default sharpness, as you can always go sharper but lose detail if setting is to sharp by default which induced to much noise for there liking. More than meets the eye!

    < For the pro-sumers

Ok for the enthusiast, but for pro-sumers, LOL. Where did this reviewer come from?

    • +3

He comes from a place where he knows what he is talking about, entertaining to watch, informative, unbiased and likeable. The polar opposite someone who thinks a hot shoe adaptor is a deal killer on a compact camera and puts down youtube reviewers who are much more knowledgeable than themselves.

Seem to recall that particular YouTuber distinguishing himself as not particularly trustworthy. But I agree it's just nonsense to suggest the existence of the significantly more expensive RX100 II has made the original 'obsolete'.

  • No free shipping for me?

    • Reloaded the webpage and now it's showing up as + delivery for me too.

Could be a glitch as I'm seeing free shipping on a lot of their other items. Maybe they just took it away for this listing to make a few more dollars, pretty dodgy.

      I'll mark as expired.

They had free ship for Boxing Day on everything

  • +1

Yup, cracking price doubly so with the free shipping. I finally stopped deliberating between it and the Canon S110 (another class leader, though in a slightly different class!) and grabbed it a day or two ago.

Can't wait for it to arrive, it will be the go everywhere-with-me-and-wife-especially-when-a-DSLR-is-inconvenient-which-is-alot-of-the-time-slash-baby camera :D

    • It's everything and more, even after reading all those 10/10 reviews. I'm constantly blown away by the results I get even after expecting DSLR quality. For me it was a toss up between the Pentax MX-1, Canon S110, Fuji XF-1 and Sony HX50v. Same reason as you - I never took my DSLR anywhere because of the bulk. I was also considering some of the compact systems like the NEX, PEN and others but then I realised I probably would be leaving those at home too.

Have a read of this. It's true about the 50i into a 25p timeline for best quality and shooting as flat as possible with DRO on. More detail in the highlights and shadows and setting up a custom memory option for 1/50 shutter speed with all the other options set makes it really fast to pull out the camera and get insane quality video out of it. This applies to all recent Sony cameras that shoot AVCHD also.

My next purchase will be a 52mm threaded Carryspeed Magfilter for it. Not having a built in ND filter makes it hard to shoot 1/50 (180* shutter angle at 25p/50i for proper cinematic video) wide open at f1.8 on any given day without blowing away significant highlight detail.

      • Nice, that sounds great re: your filter. Your shortlist of cameras mirrors exactly the ones I was umming and ahhing over. I too considered the NEX cameras, I think they're terrific, but realistically they have the same drawback as a full fledged DSLR in the context wee're discussing, namely portability.

Thanks for the link - I've looked at about a million other reviews and seen sooooo many photos from across Flickr/imgr/pixelpeeper/plain old forums - the RX100 has not once ceased to amaze me.

Even the 'gimmicky' filters, like the extraordinary water paint filter, gives astonishing results SOOC.

I adore my K30, but there are times where it is an inappropriate camera, and of course, I simply can't take it everywhere with me.

  • kogan sucks but the deal was sweet with the free delivery (at the time)
