better future? does it allow time travel as well?

Android and Windows Phone is gradually eating up Apple's market share but from the statistics it appears that the uptake of Windows phones seem to be much, much slower or lower than Androids.

        • Android yes, Windows phone is closer to Blackberry at the moment. It will be a long time before Windows phone takes a large chunk away from either.

        • Actually WP market share growth is far in excess of both Android and iPhone… http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS24442013

        better future !
what about the present - when you want to use it now ?

        Former WP user (Lumia 820)
Liked it when I had it, but glad to ditch it.

You know you have a problem when a company sells a mobile phone based mostly on its lens and photo taking capabilities !

        Good Luck to MS though

        • Why did you ditch it? And for what?

        • Why ?

Lack of apps which I was used to using on Android. And the ones which existed had their own problems, such as the Whatsapp app which was pretty notorious for being a battery hog.
No orientation lock FFS !, No decent data usage app, not even from the providers themselves, no mobile VOIP app ….
And then the WP Youtube app which was released and retracted! (lol, is there such a thing as WP Youtube app ?)
And all this was in 2013

But, there is one exception. Nokia Here was THE BEST smartphone navigation suite I ever used. Would love to get it on other platforms

Nokia is not the problem here - its Microsoft. Its not without reason, Nokia is now bringing out Android handsets (and it was probably already in the pipeline before MS bought them out.)

          for what ?
          iPhone 5S
This is my second iPhone ever. (First one was the 3GS)

Not here to bash, but thought I just chime in regarding your points regarding some apps.

Whatsapp is quite updated now, certainly not as fluid/polished as iOS/Droid, but it's definitely better than when it first came out.
It doesn't really hog battery, as I'm quite certain most heavy smart phone user's battery doesn't last longer than a full day (meaning you'll probably need to charge it before you sleep, or when you first get into work the next day).
That being said, I charge my Nokia Lumia 900 every night. It's about 20-30% battery remaining at around 11pm, and I unplug it around 6am.
I use my phone quite a bit, having 4 email accounts with push set on. 3 with instant push notification, and another with 1 hour delay.
On heavy usage days (like using Nokia Drive) the battery obviously gets drained pretty quick, but that's using it with those big apps.

The data usage app (cellular data) I use is called "Call Credit" and it works with many Australian phone carriers (I have mine set for my Optus Postpaid and Prepaid, and also my TPG Postpaid). Works beautifully, showing all previous bills, phone and data usage. The delay in data is based on how quick the data is displayed at the carriers website (therefore, Optus refreshing your plan usage every xx minutes etc). I bought lifetime subscription for $2.50 but it has been well worth it IMHO.

I can't comment on VOIP apps, haven't used any.

The best youtube app (from what I gather) is Metrotube. Have to pay some $ but sounds/looks good. I don't youtube much, and if I do, I just use an app called "Tube Pro" which was free to download. I don't have any gripes with it, does the job well from my perspective.

Anyways, Windows phone is great for simplicity. If you're not a huge app whore, and simply want to just call/text, have facebook chat integration in text area then it's great. Fluid, smooth, and does the job.

Pretty much most of the huge name apps are on Windows phone. May not be as polished as you find on iOS/Droid, but at least it's there and does the job well (like Teamviewer, Shazam, Pandora, Gmaps etc).

That been said, I can't comment for everyone and I believe people shouldn't be to harsh on the OS. It's rather young, progression is going slowly, and at least it's not restricting you into a certain environments (pointing at the evil itunes :-p).

Thought I point it out that I also don't mind Droids, but I personally wouldn't grab an iPhone only because of the iTunes ecosystem…. shudders.

Also, my last gripe about Windows Phone OS is that if you're an avid/active stock/currency trader, then there's no good apps out there. No Metatrader app which will make your trading life suck….

          Over and out, my 2.5c

PS: 31.9% of the people that uses an iPhone hate iTunes.

So apart from the lack of rotation lock (which arrived with the Black update on my 920) the issues you describe relate solely to the delayed availability of apps on a new platform. Sounds like the OS wasn't the problem at all.

Regarding Youtube there have been third party apps like Metrotube for ages. The official app support was killed due to Google acting like d-bags… http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/15/4624706/google-blocks-wind…

I just open youtube.com in the browser (videos play full screen). Same with internet banking…why use a gimped app with less features and stupidly low transaction limits? Apps are cool and all but not crucial to me.

    • You just beat me to it by seconds

      • I'd rather you swap Nokia WP for iPhone in your sentence, but yours is ok too.

They're different sized phones, with different specs.

      The Nokia 1520 is a 6" phone with a 20mp camera.

Sure, the Nexus 5 is a lot cheaper, but the specs are worse (if that's what is important to you).

It's like asking why someone would want a Samsung Note 3 (which is a similar size to the Nokia 1520) over a Nexus 5!

The best phone OS is Android hands down…

    • I don't know about best, but it is the most popular.

Cheaper than iPhone, blitz marketing by Samsung and "me too" purchasing decisions. Android's OS is not a sales driver in itself.

You guys should imagine a world with just Android, sad.

Competition is good and the consumers wins

Windows Phone 8 has some very unique features, very good drivers and Nokia handsets are built to a very high standard and also very unique

The thing that I think would keep me from buying something like this is Internet Explorer is far behind Chrome. One big issue is you can't hover so many website menus won't work. A Phablet needs a top notch web browser and accompanying apps which Windows Phone lacks

I think Windows Phone 8 is currently great for a phone but not for a Phablet, something combining Windows Phone / RT would be much better I think but still having the above issues

    • Thanks for that, I've never had any interest in windows 8 phones because their specs were generally low (specifically small screens). Unfortunately now that they have fixed that with phones like the Nokia 1520 it turns out the OS is not ready for it :(

      • Actually WP8 GDR3 which has been released (know have it) supports 1080

        • I believe that the Nokia 1520 ships with that version or a higher build (as outlined in plasmapuff' comment/link below). Considering the issues outlined in that review it seems that the introduction of high res support is 'beta' at best.

I will wait a little longer for the next generation of big screen WinPhones, but Windows phone looks to be developing into something I could get used to.

    • ArsTechnica sums up WP8's woes with phablets very well here:

I imagine with WP8.1 the browser will get upgraded to the IE11 core, which is pretty decent - the main issue with it becomes that web developers are lazy and sniff useragents, see Internet Explorer and proceed to serve it something that would look fine in an older version but actually breaks the new, decent version.
