  • Same price as JB but with the cover so yeah good deal :)

  • possibly drop to $600 with the touch cover before all old stocks clear out? or I'm daydreaming.

  • -2

also 64gb with cover for $428 - makes it a better deal than asus t100 at that price

    • +1

Where did you see that? If you mean this: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/tablets-ere…

This is not the "pro" version and has a much slower processor and runs Windows RT not the full Windows version.

Possibly still a good buy though due to free cover.

      • -2

RT is never a good buy.

        • +5

RT is pretty useful, and free office make it worthwhile.

        • about as useful as hp's touchpad and web os

        • +6

Nonsense. I have a Surface RT and use it every day for convenience computing. Much more capable than the iPad it replaced and way cheaper at less than $300 with touch cover. I have a dual screen desktop for anything complex.

    • If its jb hifi its the RT version

  • anyone knows how to expand the SSD? is it possible?

    • expand it with an external sd card :)

      • what if I put some big games into the SD card?

        • use a 64gb micro sd

        • what big games are you playing on this?

        • -1

maybe COD and Crysis? they should work fine(not perfectly) on surface pro 1.

        • +1

Crysis and COD working "fine" on an integrated HD4000? You should probably rethink your gaming machine.

        • you can actually play Ghosts on low and Crysis 2 on mid

          http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-4000.69168.0.…

        • Fair enough. 40FPS is considerably higher than I thought you'd get even on low settings. Still… high-end games on low-end machines is not exactly a match made in heaven.

        • +2

Ghosts on low is the muddiest textured game I've ever seen

    • the surface uses a mSATA SSD. its possible but will require a bit of tinkering around and will void the warranty.

    • Not really possible without breaking the machine. Google it.

  • Very tempting now with the keyboard

  • I ordered one to pickup from a store that was displayed as having stock. When I called the store they said they don't have any. The online chat person says the only store he can see that has one is Mt Druitt and he is unable to tell me if more will be coming in.

    • The Op says "well stocked around Sydney CBD", did you call any CBD stores

      • I used the online chat on the website, they said no stores apart from Mt Druitt have one.

EDIT Just went back on the live chat and magically the store has some stock now.

Nice price. I got a surface pro a couple of weeks ago and absoloutely love this thing. My poor new nexus 7 hasn't been touched since :(

Isn't the touch cover generally considered pretty crap though? Better than nothing, I guess, especially if it comes free with the tablet, but still.

    • it is the crap one, tbh i wouldn't bother. It probably inflates the price if anything and most people would opt for the type cover anyway. imo the touch cover is liveable, but it's not a walk in the park to get used to.

    • I use the touch cover on mine, I love it, I can type quickly and it's reliable, just took a little getting used to as the buttons don't physically move, after a couple of weeks of use you won't look back.

  • Anyone know if the free keyboard offer is a harvey norman specific or does it work anywhere?

    • +1

I saw the offer on the Microsoft Store with free touch cover, however they charge $739 for the Surface Pro 128GB (free shipping).

  • +2

Price is tempting…. but I am not sure about the ~4 hours battery life, which is half of Surface Pro2 (granted price is much more) but seems too little in today's world of Haswell newer ultrabooks where even 6hrs is considered low when you have most Ultrabooks in the 8hr or more range….dilema!
Anyone get any real life experience with the real life battery life of this? Thanks!

    • it is more than 5 hours especially if you want to use it as a tablet with limited cpu power in power settings.
Cos it is a very hot machine when full speed, you need to limit the CPU power to 10-30% for it to be cool enough to hold with your hand.
It is not as light as some other touch screen ultrabook , like the sony vaio pro 11.

but it is half the price.

I bought this thing at student pricing (~665) plus type cover 2 (backlight). Really love this unit, very fast. Yes, battery is not stellar, but Pro 2 costs 300+ more which did not appeal to me. Also, in the States some guys buy 26000MAH batteries from Amazon that charge this guys 1.25 times with a China cable from ebay. Overall great unit. The wedge mouse is fantastic, too. Pricey though. Make sure to have a 16GB (not 8) USB stick handy, copy recovery information, then delete recovery partition, then do Windows 8 updates, then Windows 8.1 update is offered. After booting 8.1 the first time make a system backup with the windows tools so you can come back to it anytime. If you do not do the 16GB recovery copy, Windows 8.1 will nto recognize the windows 8 recovery partition and you have 7+GB wasted space. Use Start8 as a Start button - works great. Make sure to buy a bluetooth mouse, one USB slot is not enough to be used by a mouse. Monitor connectors (VGA, HDMI, etc)can be found on ebay - don't go for the 50 dollar solutions from MS. Same counts for second AC adaptor from China via ebay = ~20 bucks. I skinned mine using a Best Skins ever skin. However, ExtremeGuard is currently on sale. Recommended because fingerprints on back are hard to remove. Now go and buy one. ;)

    • That is sure one long paragraph. Good tips though.

    • How long can you use it for after a full charge? In your opinion, can this replace a regular laptop if I will be mainly using it for browsing the web, streaming lecture videos, taking notes during class… No games or music for me btw… cheers…

Up to 4 hours if not used in eco mode. So not an all day machine. Yes, I am using it as a replacement due to its speed. Tried Atom processors before (ASUS) and yes, I love the up to 18 hours or so, but if working becomes painful, I am out. This one has the power I want. But you need to carry charger around. Screen is fantastic and it runs in my office on external keyboard and screen. Neoprene bags with charger extra pocket (important) on Amazon. If you put it in eco mode, 5 hours possible on a dark flight (screen low).

        • Thank you so much for the good tips. I've heard that people can set the cpu to run on 50% to save power, is this the eco mode you mention here?

        • you need to manually set the maximum cpu % , It is fast enough even with 30% and a lot cooler to hold with your hand for net browsing and reading ebook :D

It will burn your hand if the surface pro is running at full speed.

        • How do you tinker with CPU % speed?

    • just bought one… . .Really loving it. especially the Pen input. Cant express my experience in words… thanks a lot for your suggestion. Now the only little Problem is the battery. Hoping for the extended battery for better performance to use this unique features in this powerful device. Even I am typing (writing) this with my pen. This is saving me lot of time.

  • I just got mine on Wednesday, without a cover. I wish I knew this deal was coming, I'd have gotten it instead. Snap it up folks!

It's a great deal on a great device.

Buy a power cover when they come out soon if you're worried about battery life.

  • Should I get Surface Pro 1 or Asus T100?

    • do you want to use a pen or not? If yes, get the Surface Pro, T100 doesn't have a digitiser.

      • surface pro got a lot more CPU power, but too hot to hold it with you hand unless u limit the CPU to 30% max.
T100 is a lot cooler and batter last double the time, but the cpu power is a lot less.
30% cpu of surface pro 's i5 is still slightly faster than the T100's atom.

  • I will jump if this was touch cover 2.

    • +1

I have just bought this and if any one want the touch cover, I am willing to part it for $55.

      • +1

My wife want the touch cover so I kept it in the end. Actually quit good after a few minutes with it I am getting use to it.

  • -2

It is really thick and heavy like a brick. I played it for 2 days and sold it straightaway.

  • I tried playing black ops 2 and metal gear raising with Low Settings worked perfectly along with my Xbox controller…

  • price just went up, and live chat is claiming 698 price never existed.

    • Ya just saw the price… it went up in harvynorman but in Microsoft store its 629 under student offer… without touch cover of course…

  • JB Hi fi are advertising $698 with touch cover as of today.

  • Yes I got one for $698 with the touch cover today. Just needed to show them the JB hifi email special, although with some arm twisting you probably wouldn't need it
