LG Z360 13.3" Ultrabook $1094 at Harvey Norman, Caringbah (In Store Only) Reg $1399

20

Available only from Harvey Normans stores as far as I know and it's not on their web site. Since there is no link to the deal, I have just put the product url.

Specifications:

13.3" FHD (1920x1080) IPS panel (non-touch)
Intel® Core™ i5-3337U
SSD 128 GB
4GB (DDR3L 1600MHz)
Webcam 1.3MP
2 x USB 3.0
2 x Micro-SD
Mini RJ-45 (+ adapter)
HDMI (full size)

Weight is 1.15 Kg, just 90 grams more than the Sony Vaio Pro equivalent, which is supposed to be the lightest ultrabook to date.

The LCD panel is crisp and colourful, but it is non-touch. That wouldn't be an issue for me because I'd wipe Windows 8 anyway. The case looks attractively thin but is made of ABS plastic with a matte white finish.
There is no SD card slot but there are 2 micro SD slots, which seems to be a unique feature in ultrabooks. It also has a set of Windows 8 special function keys down the left hand side (saves hunting for the charms with the touchpad, I think).

Generally speaking, web reviews are favourable with some finding minor issues to nag about, mainly the touchpad operation.

I've not been a fan of LG in the past after a couple of dud products, but hopefully LG have lifted their game a bit since then.

  • Hard choice between this and a macbook air.

    • If you're planning to install Windows, you probably should get the 256GB model. I just bootcamp'd my 128GB model, and the largest I could make the Windows partition was 24GB … with a lousy 6.5GB of free space after removing the default 4GB swap file. Having said that, probably should take Google's advice, not mine…

  • LG laptops are so rare

    • They have just re-entered the market a few months ago.

  • 128MB is only just enough, I find that I spend too much time cleaning up…

Other than that, nothing has ever come close to this in terms of value for money: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80721

    • Well this is why I thought at least one of the micro SD slots would come in handy.
Add 64GB micro SD card if you need to, and it's removeable.
But it really depends on what you want to keep on it, for me 128GB is plenty.

  • Could have been a decent deal if it's at least a 4th gen intel and 8 gig ram (not that I will notice any difference, but at the back of my head it might be).

    • CPU not so much other than maybe battery life. But 4GB ram is pitiful these days.

      • As I understand it, Haswell gives you the best battery life if you're just a light user.
Give it some hard work to do and it won't be much better.
Look at some of the tests that are done on laptops … battery life is drastically reduced under heavy use.
Not all other ultrabooks are using Haswell yet either.
As for RAM size, 4GB is the most common in ultrabooks and should be plenty for most purposes.
My old laptop has 2GB and when I checked how much was being used for web browsing with multiple pages open, etc., it was just 1GB. But that is using Ubuntu, not Windows.

  • LG used to have non-existent support for their laptops. Very difficult to obtain warranty. They looked ok, but never released Bios updates, driver updates (for newer OS's).

These days you can just go the manufacture for most drivers, but I'll never buy another LG notebook, while there are better manufacturers out there (Asus, Dell, Sony, Samsung).

    • Hopefully they have lifted their game if they think they can compete with the big boys.
      Time will tell.
I had reason to require support from Lenovo recently and that was no walk in the park.
I'm not trying to defend LG as I've been no fan in the past either.
But having just spent time looking for a new ultrabook I am just posting what I thought was a good deal, price vs specs.

  • "Sony Vaio Pro" equiv. except this is Ivy bridge and non touch screen?

    • $200 cheaper than the cheapest vaio pro 13 http://www.i-store.com.au/product/?CategoryID=29&productid=3…. but I do think the Sony vaio is worth the extra $200

      • That's if they have them in stock. Regular retail is $1499 on the Sony
But Sony's web site cuurently shows they are out of stock.

Who knows, HVN might be even more flexible on the LG since they seem to be so unloved.

  • Dosn't seem to have a back-lit keyboard, which will be a pain for 'before sleep in-bed' use.
