Harvey Norman 40% off Toshiba Satellite Z930/00D Ultrabook i5 6GB RAM 128SSD - $764

660

Been looking for another ultrabook and it seems that Harvey Norman have 40% off all of their Toshiba notebooks. As I was looking was looking specifically for ultrabooks, the one that caught my eye was:

Z930/00D - I5 1.7ghz 6gb ram, 128gb SSD for $764 ($1199 on staticice). This is even cheaper than the superceded z830 which they are selling for $838. http://www.harveynorman.com.au/toshiba-satellite-z930-00d-ul…

Although the deal here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80711 is also bettered by HN by $38.

The Z930 was a superb deal I thought considering its a current generation processor. Have a Z830 in use in our office which I acutally prefer to the Zenbooks (we have 4 of these), the screen resolution and aesthetic is the only things IMO the zenbook does better.

edit: was unable to determine when the sale price ends.
edit 2: expires 01/10/12 - Thanks Flincky

Paid $930 for this a few months back with 4gb ram
    . Awesome ultrabook, great price.

    • Do you mean the $500 cash back promotion sale of ultrabook?

  • +1

Come on, net/note/ultrabooks. Move past the 1366x768 resolution. You can do it!

    • +1

They could, but not for this price.

      • +2

For now, sure. Hence the positive vote. But once the higher res screens become the standard it'll happen. A man can dream.

        • Some of the new zenbooks in a 13" form have full HD, haven't seen one yet but it took a long time to adjust to the 1600x900 on the original zenbooks so not sure how usable it would be. Adjusting font sizes is no good either as some applications don't handle it very well when printing.

Its just a matter of time mate!

        • +1

Sony Vaio Z series already have 1920 x 1080 in their 13.3 screen

        • Yeah, I know, I'm just impatient. The new Zenbooks (UX31A) also have 1920x1080, I believe. I just want them to become commonplace so the prices go down!

        • You can change the DPI in windows display properties to make text bigger.

Zenbook prime = Ultimate Ultrabook, 1080p screen.

    • +7

      Zenbook Prime = NOT $764. :-)

  • Hey guys, silly question…

I know these netbooks have 1366x768 resolution, but what if you output it via VGA to a 32" FHD TV?

    Could you then output 1920 x 1080?

    • As long as it has a HDMI out connector (no idea if this one does or not) you should be fine.

      • Think vga can do it too, don't know enough to say, but think it depends on the cable and the port/chip/whatever as well. Pretty sure ive done it before, unless I am remembering the wrong cable

        • +1

VGA can;t output a FULL HD signal, not enough bandwidth. I remember reading up on this and it I tested it and confirmed it.

          Unless I missed something…

      • Z930 has a fullsize HDMI connector. Check any review for details.

    • I think so

    • depends on what your tv can support too.
(not necessary the same with other inputs, best to check manual)
assuming your tv does, this notebook should do fine

      • FHD is 1920x1080

    • So long as your video card supports it, it can do 1920x1080 on the TV

    • My Lenovo T420 can output to a 26" Dell monitor in 1920 x 1080 resolution.

  • Tempting, if they had the 256gb ssd version for a reasonable increase in price I think couldn't resist. Still.. good find.

  • Got one from hardly normal at Liverpool. They had two in stock. A mate got one from hardly normal at Martin Place.

  • I would have thought that this was a better deal O.o:
    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/toshiba-satellite-u840-00q-ul…

    • i saw that, but it's the older i5 processor, is slightly bigger at 14" and has a tiny ssd for caching only.

      • Can we swap HDD to SSD without soldering involved?

        • Yes you can. Just need to open the back cover. Not sure what drive the U840 uses…possibly Sata2. The Z930 uses an Msata drive.

    • the weight is the killer 1.73kg vs 1.12kg

  • Needs better gfx :(

    • I read that as "Needs better girlfriend :( "

      I hope that's not the case !

  • The screen quality is too poor, but for this price you really can not ask for more.

  • Has anyone tried installing Win8 RTM on this machine ? If so did the standard Windows drivers pick everything up and run the machine ok ?

  • what's the diff btw z830 AND z930?

    • +1

830 uses old CPU from last year

    • and only 4G RAM instead of 6G

    • oh so not much difference,…. thanks :)

  • For those thinking about the mandatory 'price match at Officeworks'; this is their model listed online:

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/search/Toshiba+Z930

It's not exactly the same and special order only.

Wish they had the same deal on the U840/940. Better styling on those!

    • +1

Not exactly the same RAM for a start, so don't even try to match this 6Gb deal with their 4Gb model. I tried this with an earlier deal with Officeworks' call centre but the specs have to match, before they even try to split hairs on the model numbers etc.

  • I was playing around with it today at JB (harvey norman didn't have one on display). Seemed like a solidly built ultrabook. The trackpad seemed fine as well. Did not like the keyboard though. Felt very awkward to type on compared to the other ultras, maybe because I'm used to a mechanical keyboard. Still, a great price for decent solidly built hardware.

  • graphics card seems to be absent

      • +1

if its built in then its not a graphics card, Its simple integrated graphics. Itll play games already released but come next year, you'll be wishing for something with a gpu

      • I have an i5 2430m and nvidia gt 540m in my laptop and it can barely play Diablo 3 on lowest settings (23fps or so in most areas). It's unplayable using the onboard video, like 5fps.

  • +1

My two fav ultrabooks would be this toshy and the Asus zenbook. Reliable workhorse, and something with awesome styling. Either way can't go wrong

  • So hard to choose between this and the samsung laptop

    • A series 9 Samsung? Well, that really comes down to $500 vs. a higher screen resolution and a cool design. With the current price difference it is no question for me.

If Samsung upgrade to 8GB of RAM and 256GB+ SSD, then they can justify the price they charge even in my eyes…

      • No i meant the samsung from jb for 638 which i managed to get for 609, i7 3610qm which scores higher benchmark than a 3570k! With a 7670 1gb gpu, bargain!

  • +2

OK, so I bought one (actually The Lovely sent me to Hardly Normal in Richmond to buy one for her). I am typing on it right the Mod: Foul Language now, yo. It's a very handy little piece of kit - and so light.

Upside: I inherited her old laptop and I will probably get more goes on the iPad (which will become a PooPad as I play Aspalt 7 on it on the poo-chute).

Nice keyboard, good screen seems to have pretty good build quality. HDMI, 3USB ports, VGA out and such. And $1299 on the box.

Gotta go - The Lovely wants a shirt ironed. (Whu-TSSSSSH - that's the 'whipped' sound)

  • With the closer and closer MS will release their surface. I think they will have more and more ultrabook bargain.

  • Gonna go check out this sale after work but anyone seen any other decent 13.3" ones, this is a bit over my budget ($500-$600 would be good.)

    • For $600, you'd be looking at an older Acer S3 with mechanical HDD with SSD cache.

Splash out abit more for this!

      • Thanks shawn!Do you have a link to that Acer S3

My initial budget was $400ish (a lenovo e320) as it would only be used for general internet/word processing and watching HD videos through HDMI to the telly when my media centre couldn't support a particular file.

I have my desktop PC for other stuff, video and photo editing etc. So the lappy is just for basic stuff taking to uni etc I don't see apoint spending too much more on it, i'd rather upgrade my desktop PC with the difference

    • How about this new deal that just got posted http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80819
HP ENVY Ultrabook for $599. Definitely lower specs though and much heavier at 1.8kg…

      • That's pretty cool. Could probably sell the beats for $200 easily too to further offset the price. But the screen size is 14" :( a bit too large

        • The Toshy is really really light. 1.1kg or something like that.

Compared to the Toshy, you'll feel the weight of the HP Sleekbook (it's not an Ultrabook as it doesn't meet intel's specifications). Google it.

Still, a good deal with the Beats.

Are you using it for travel or a desktop replacement?

For cheaper Ultrabooks, try MLN or MSY. They often have deals on Acer ultrabooks.

        • It'll be mainly for Uni (40%), at home in bed(40%) and at home as a media centre hooked to home theatre(30%)

        • +2

          40%+40%+30%=110%
Where did you get that extra 10% from? ;)

  • +1

Picked one up from HN Maribyrnong (a few left). The clowns at HN make shopping there a terrible experience though

It's light (slightly flimsy feeling). The screen isn't that great compared to the Zenbook and Series 9.

But really, for the price, it's quite the bargain.

Pluses? There's VGA and Ethernet Port (absent from some competitors such as the MB Air and Zenbook). It's lighter than the competition. The trackpad is OK (has multitouch) but I wish the keyboard keys has more travel.

You can upgrade it fairly easily too (the 4GB RAM stick can be replace with an 8GB, taking it to 10GB Ram). The SSD is an Msata and you can find 256GB replacements on eBay for $200+.

    • +1

did you see choice's magazine summary of service experience with them? still Awesome price!!

      • +1

Yep, I was overseas but heard it was bad. I can't be bothered to retell the story about what happened. Suffice to say that I'm happy with Ultrabook not the service.

  • No store in Sydney has stock and I am travelling overseas tomorrow :(

  • +1

PS: Guys, I just got a call from the store I bought this from (long story, but I sent in a complaint email and they surprisingly got back to me within 20 minutes!).

If you buy it, make sure you get the FREE SOFTWARE pack that comes with it. There are posters around stores saying that all Ultrabooks come with free software worth $475. The store franchisee just dropped off this pack that included:

    • Intel Antitheft Service (similar to Apple's Find my Mac/iPhone)
    • MediaEspresso 6.5
    • YouCam5
    • Power Director 10
    • Photo Director 3
    • Music Creator 6
    • Tribes Ascend

    Enjoy!

    • Hmmm, I picked up the last one from Albany Creek, QLD and they never mentioned anything about this…. will contact them tomorrow. Thanks!

    • Hi Shawn, I remeber seeing the FREE SOFTWARE BONUS at a few HN stores in the past week, it also was on HN's website, however it doesnt appear there anymore. I called a couple of the stores, the 1st hasnt heard of it and the 2nd store thinks it was only on during last weekend. I remeber seeing somewhere, might have been on the HN website, that the FREE SOFTWARE BONUS was on till 30 Sep. Do you or does anyone else know any more about this!

I got a Z930 yesterday, good little unit.

      Cheers

      • +1

I am not sure. The manager rang me and said it was definitely still on and he gave me a copy of the software.

Poster were taken down though. This was at the Maribyrong Vic store.

        • +1

Thanks. I did call around and found that Thomastown store still had the FREE SOFTWARE BONUS. I purchased mine from Coburg, so I rang Coburg a 2nd time and spoken to the sales person I bought off, he checked and advised that his store only received one and I could take that one.

I went and picked it up, but not sure if it is the complete thing though - this is what i got - 'Intel Anti-Theft Service', it is plastic sealed, has a RRP of $333 and there is no mention of any of the other software you mentioned, i.e. •MediaEspresso 6.5, •YouCam5, •Power Director 10, •Photo Director 3, •Music Creator 6
, •Tribes Ascend. Have you picked yours up yet, if so, is this what you got as well?

          Cheers

        • +1

Yep, this is what I got! It's all in there.

  • +1

Tried to buy one at Preston (VIC) tonight but they only one last one, which the display version and also missing the box… Didn't want to risk it.

    • Maribyrnong had a couple of units left when I went last night.

    • Consider ordering from them online, postage to regional NSW is quoted At the princely sum if $6.95

      • +1

        Yep, just did tonight.

I actually visited the Coburg store the day after and they also only had the display available for sale. They keyboard looked a bit like some sticky fingers had touched it…

I do believe the "universe" was trying to tell me something, but I've decided to order it online anyway! Have ordered for free pick-up at the city. Hopefully, I'll be able to have it in my hands by the end of the week!

        • Haha, this is my second failed attempt at buying a laptop online. HN just rang to say they are out of stock and will be refunding my money. Sigh… It appears I am destined to never get a new PC.

        • Last night, I decided to experiment with the online Check Store Availability function and typed some relatively arbitrary suburbs. It turns out there is stock available at various stores, albeit mainly regional locations, but some even within the same state. Why wouldn't they offer to source stock from within their own network to make a sale?

Their e-mail address is laughable: [email protected]

        • +1

Oh the irony in that email address, haha!

        • Finally after much saga, I am happy to report that I finally received my order!

For my trouble, I negotiated for them to add in a small freebie as well.

  • +1

Between this and the Samsung NP530U3C-A03AU deal: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80730 (direct link to the unit: http://flingshot.com.au/products/copy-of-samsung-np530u3c-a0…)

what are the main differences besides the SSD and 2gb extra ram? They have the same processor.

Is the extra $140 mainly for the 128GB SSD and the Ram? Or is there something I'm missing like extra great build quality on the Toshiba? But I assume the Samsungs are good, I've heard good stuff about them.

The RAM is really cheap anyway and I can live without an SSD for a little while long until they get cheaper-ish

    • +1

It's also for the class of Ultrabook you're paying for. The Toshy is similar in class to the Samsung Series 9. The Flightshot deal is for the heavier, series 5.

$140 to pay for portability and an SSD is worth it IMHO. Once you go to an SSD, you'll never want to go back to a mechanical drive!

      • Oh right, thanks Shawn.

I actually played with both of them today and although the Sammy is slightly heavier, I liked it better than the Toshiba. the Toshiba feels flimsy and too much like it's going to snap in half. The Sammy felt better typing for me too.

Also, not sure if you can upgrade the toshiba's HDD's/ram? I don't think I saw any doors underneath for access. The Sammy you can though.

How's build quality/reputation on the Sammy vs the Toshiba?

        • You need to open the entire bottom cover of the Toshy to upgrade the RAM and SSD. :-)

The Sammy equivalent Series 9 is better in build quality than the Toshy. Not sure about the Series 5.

  • There is an fan noise issue with the Z930 model. I got one from HN yesterday and returned this morning when I discovered the fan kept rattling with weird noise like helicopter in heavy load mode (youtube, movies, gaming etc.) You may want to test yours by swinging it backwards and forwards when the fan spins at full speed.

    • +2

Yours must be a dud. I just spent six hours on my Z930 and could not even hear the fan at all. I thought it must be dead.

      • The issue I found only occurred when the fan was in full speed and I was tilting the notebook up and down. It didn't show up when the notebook was still.

        • Looks like I spoke too soon. I've just been using mine in absolute silence and there is a buzzing noise when the fan is spinning. You can alter the intensity of the buzzing by tilting the unit from side to side. It is only just audible when you are sitting with absolutely no background noise.

If it gets worse I may contact Toshiba, but at present it's a minor annoyance.

    • No fan issue here. I researched this model thoroughly before I splashed the cash and the fan issue that was heard in the Z830, is not present in the Z930.

  • i was looking on the site for these.
i was going to buy one between $400-$600 what would be the best one?

  • Thanks for posting the deal. I bought one yesterday.

  • Could have got this for $679 today.

The Good Guys will refund 120% of the difference of a cheaper advertised price within 30 days. They had this model for $1189 and Harvey Norman have it for $764 as we know. 120% difference of that works out to be $510. 1189 - 510 = 697, if my brain serves me correctly.

I asked the employee at the good guys (not specifically about this deal, but in general) and he said that even if it's a sale, as long as the price is printed somewhere like on their website or in a catalogue and it's a brick and mortar store, they will do it within the 30 days.

Was tempting but I think I'm going to jump on the other Samsung NP530U3C-A03AU deal instead, it just feels better in hand.

What's weird though is that they don't just price beat by 20%, which would save a lot of stuffing around!

    • Good find! Can anyone tell if this will work? If so, I can return the HN purchase (this ultrabook has a 14 day money back guarantee) and go to the Good Guys next door!

The GG have it listed on their website: http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buyonline/Toshiba_Toshiba_Z930…

These are the T&Cs for the GG 120% difference refund.

      http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buyonline/content-PriceGuarantee?cm_sp=sidebar--leftpromoespot--priceguarantee

      After You Buy

When you purchase, The Good Guys provide an exclusive 30 Day Price Guarantee. Should you discover a better advertised price for the same product by any local competitor*, simply bring in the advertisement^, plus your sales receipt within 30 days of purchase. We will cheerfully refund 120% of the difference.

Our 120% 30 day price guarantee applies on all newly boxed, currently available stock of the identical model, advertised by a local competitor.

      • Local competitor - A local bricks and mortar storefront, actively engaged in The Good Guys local retail market.

^ Evidence of an authentic advertised price in a daily newspaper or catalogue, commercial radio or television.

      UPDATE:

Seems like GG have amended their price online to $1142.

      • You should give it a try, but do it early in the morning so if it doesn't work you can go straight back to Harvey Norman and buy it again before the sale ends and before they sell your model on.

        • Already got one from HN. Would need to return it to HN, go to GG, buy it and ask for 120% refund. THEN go BACK to HN and hope still they have stock.

        • -1

No, GG will not refund you 120% of the full price! They'll give you back 120% of the difference (GG price minus HN price). You keep your laptop and don't have to buy it again from HN.

      • You would need to:

        1. Find the $764 price advertised in a newspaper or catalogue (from reading the terms it's unclear whether online websites also count - I doubt it)

        2. Buy it from GG at FULL PRICE

        3. Go back to GG later (logically today due to when sale ends) with evidence (#1) and get them to enforce their guarantee. They may ensure stock is available by ringing around.

For #3, they might try to claim it's same day as you bought and therefore will only match price, but technically it's still "after you buy" so you can hold your ground.

  • any thoughts on this one - Toshiba Satellite L850/03S Laptop for $590
    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/promos/the-big-sale/toshiba-s…

    • This weighs 2.4kg and the Z930 weighs 1.12kg

    • ok, i was talking about how the laptop is, but thanks anyway

  • Anyone who got this care to chime in? My Fn + 3 and Fn + 4 button to control the volume up and down doesn't work. :-( all other Fn keys work…

    • Mine are working fine. There is no feedback on screen though.

      • Strange. Damn.

If you want feedback on screen, you need to activate the Toshy Flashcard program.

        • OK, I checked this problem up online and most people say to reinstall the Toshiba Value Added software. I installed both the 64 and 32 bit versions and the Fn + 1/2/3/4 don't work. All other Fn keys work.

Restore OS perhaps? Never had this issue with Macs. LOL.

  • Thanks guys, I bought one and after getting GST next week it'll be about $695. Good deal for an occasional work laptop.
