THX Calibration Tool for TV & Sound Systems (Free until 3rd Feb - ANDROID OS ONLY)

630

*** SEE COMPATIBLE ANDROID PHONES BELOW***

THX tune-up is a two screen app that helps you check and properly adjust your TV, projector and speakers so you get the most out of your home entertainment system. THX tune-up is completely interactive and you can go through it at your own pace - in any order.

Before you download and get started, please ensure you have the correct equipment and adapters to enjoy and utilize this app. Read Device & Connection Requirements, Sound Adjustments Note below and the THX tune-up FAQ.

http://www.thx.com/consumer/home-entertainment/mobile-apps/t…

THX tune-up features custom video test patterns, photos and tutorials to help you adjust and confirm the best picture settings on your display based on room light conditions. Using special audio tests, THX tune-up also allows you to check external speakers to confirm they are in phase and are working properly for 2-channel stereo or 5.1 sound systems.

To get started, connect your device to your TV or AVR, locate the adjustment buttons on the remote control(s) and follow the steps which will walk you through your “THX tune-up.”
Video adjustments
• Aspect ratio – ensures your TV displays shapes and sizes correctly
• Brightness – ensures shadow details and night scenes are clearly visible
• Contrast – ensures white detail is visible on your television
• Color – ensures colors are bright and vibrant but not cartoonish
• Tint – ensures skin tones look natural and are not too green or red

THX tune-up uses the Android device’s rear-facing camera to set color and tint with a special built-in color filter. Just point your device’s camera at the TV screen and see if your color and tint settings are adjusted correctly.

Audio adjustments
• Speaker assignment – confirms speakers are connected properly to the correct AVR outputs
• Speaker phase – confirms that speaker cables are connected correctly and all speakers are in phase

THX Extras
• Play extraordinary THX trailers to show off your newly tuned TV and sound system
• Show off your audio system with the push of a button by playing “THX Deep Note” in 5.1 surround, just like in the cinema (phone or tablet must be connected via HDMI cable)
• Turn your phone or tablet into a “moo can” - tilt it to hear the “moo”
• Have a question for THX, or just want to provide feedback? Ask Tex!

Device Requirements
THX tune-up works on the following mobile devices with Android OS 4.2.2 or later.
• HTC One
• HTC One Max
• HTC One X
• HTC One X+
• LG G2
• Nexus 4
• Nexus 5
• Nexus 7-2013
• Nexus 10
• Samsung Galaxy S4 & S3
• Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Connection Requirements
To connect your Android phone or tablet to your TV, projector or AVR you must use an HDMI cable and an HDMI adapter that is compatible with your specific Android device. Current HDMI adapters for Android are MHL to HDMI, Slimport to HDMI or Micro HDMI to HDMI. Please read the specifications for your Android carefully to ensure that you have the correct HDMI adapter. You should be able to see the Android screen on the TV or projector and hear audio from it BEFORE you use THX tune-up.

Sound Adjustments Note
To run the sounds tests with an AVR, set the AVR to “Direct” or “Digital Auto Detect” mode or equivalent. If your AVR does not have this mode, it may not accurately process AAC 5.1 audio tones. Also, check the specifications for your Android device. Some Android devices “virtualize” surround sound audio and will mix and play audio on multiple speakers, even though audio signal may only be on one or two channels – as in the Speaker Assignment and Speaker Phase tests in THX tune-up. In either or both of these cases, the results of the 5.1 speaker/sound adjustments may not be accurate. This is not a problem with the app but due to audio processing of the AVR or Android device.
This app is not a professional calibration tool and is not intended to replace an in-home professional calibration.

  • 119MB app. Just downloaded it. Will try it later on my Nexus 4 :)

  • Does the phone have to be where the person usually sits?
    I suspect it does.

I don't have a 4M long HDMI cable to do it … sigh.

    • Didn't check, but probably $10 for one at MSY

    • Don't think so it just prob just shows templates on your tv via your phone so you can adjust your brightness and contrast using your tv remote.

  • Cool. What adapter will I need for a Nexus 4?

    • Slimport I believe.

      • Yes slimport, same with nexus 5….

so this won't work on my nokia 3210?

    • +9

No, but you can use it to calibrate a paper weight or a brick.

    • +9

Hah… Ah, an IPhone user, but didn't want to embarrass himself, so went with Nokia 3210 instead.:)

  • Supposedly my Galaxy S3 is actually incompatible… gah, 4.1 only on it

    • My S3 showed up as compatible, but i am using 4.2.2 on mine

      • How do you get 4.2.2? Telstra hasnt released it yet?

  • Interested to see if it works on any other phones with CM10.2-CM11. Could someone try pls?

    • It could, but I believe MHL may not always work on CM, due to driver issues.

Note that there is also the THX Optimizer tool included on every DVD and Blu-ray that is THX certified.

TURN IT UP! TURN IT UPPPPPPPPP!

    • Lol - ah I needed that!

  • I can't install this (HTC One X).
    * edit - Running 4.2.2

    • Solved my own problem. Downloaded the APK and installed it manually. Works fine now. Probably a custom ROM issue that I had.

  • The Play Store is saying my HTC ONE is not compatible?

    Anyone else get that message?

    • My One is compatible
      (running 4.3)

      • HTC One definitely compatible.

  • And it needs to know my precise location presumably to measure my distance from the screen? sarcasm

  • bohooo cant install on note 2

    • I don't get it, why they made it not compatible on note 2?!

  • It appears to be compatible with my HTC One X running 4.2.2, but it doesn't have an HDMI out. Would I need to buy an MHL adaptor just to try this app? Are these universal or have to be bought for a particular phone model?

    • +1

MHL cables are universal, and pretty cheap too.

      • Thanks - I have found one for $8 but not sure if I should get it as I would have no use for it besides this app. I already have a tablet with HDMI out that I use for connecting to the TV on the rare occasion when this is needed. I use DLNA for most other stuff.

  • Amps can do this, if you don't have one that can then this more than likely wont make things any better.

    • Never heard of an amp to calibrate the TV. Please share.

Instead of negging his comment, would anyone care answering the question, as I'm also interested in this. I have a top of the range Yamaha Aventage, which has an industry leading HQV Vida video processing chip. However, it's used for upscaling low-res material (although I have not been impressed by the results), not for calibrating the screen. So, if anybody has an AVR capable of calibrating their TV please do share indeed - some of us are genuinely curious. Now you can go and neg me as well.

I ordered the Disney WOW bluray from amazon as I heard from others that its a great disc to calibrate your system with, still waiting though.

There are links to a FREE calibration tool that I saw used on youtube, looks interesting .

          http://www.avsforum.com/t/948496/avs-hd-709-blu-ray-mp4-cali…

I am going to give the AVCHD version(note the .7z ext will need an unzipper program like Izarc to unzip) a go this weekend until my Disney WOW disc arrives. as I just got my Samsung F8500 on Tuesday.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qG0Xgpqk7EY

        • im gonna order Disney WOW as well

        • You need to be able to see a TV to calibrate it, so unless your AVR has a video camera then it won't be calibrating your panel for you.

        • I ordered it from amazon as its Region Free
Be careful though there is a DVD version also
so if you have Bluray be sure that's what you order

          http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Disney-WOW-World-of-Wonder-Blu…

    • I have a high-end AVR that has it's own sophisticated measurement and setup, but it's for audio only and it uses proprietary algorythms that are not THX sertified. I am also curious, mostly for fun, to see if this app can calibrate my Panasonic plasma.

  • Compatible with LG Optimus G as well - which is not surprising, given it's the same phone as the Nexus 4.

  • Not compatible with my Galaxy S4 (from officeworks/telstra). This is bs.

  • Not working with my S3, even though it's on the compatibility list. Stupid google play store.
