  • is it possible to get an extra 5% off from officeworks?

    • Not sure if OW will price match, but doesn't hurt to try though I guess.

      • just checked the officeworks website and couldnt find that model number so i dont think its possible

        • +1

I think they do, try SGFAD1TB, that's the OW product code selling for $219

    awesome price…

    Seagate 3.5” Freeagent Desktop 500G /1TB /1.5TB 105 / 149 / 249
shame its not the esata model! :D

if office works stock it is should be, as long as MSY have them in stock… (and office works can ring the store up)

I'd check office works to see if they carry that model still, (pretty sure ive seen it in the past) then I'd ring up MSY before going in to office works.

  • This is a really good deal if you can get it, and the Seagate Freeagent is a good drive. As an aside, Officeworks don't always price match (despite their advertising). I went on the weekend to purchase a HP Photosmart Premium Printer. OW had it for $349 but Dick Smith were selling it for $329.

OW refused to price match, and were only prepared to give me a $2 discount rather than the advertised5%. I lodged a complaint to OW and am awaiting their response.

    • I'd be very surprised if you don't receive profuse apologies + the advertised price-match - 5%.
I've only ever been refused a PM at OW when they simply couldn't get the (MSY) store to answer the phone when OW were trying to verify stock. I went back the next day and the same OW shop assistant got through to MSY and OKed the PM-5%.

      • I just heard back from Officeworks Head Office in Melbourne. They are referring my concern to the Manager of the Officeworks store I visited. However, this is not going to be of any use as it was the Manager of the store who refused to give me the discount in the first place!

I was pretty annoyed at the time as I was trying to get a price match from one of their major competitors, and I even had the Dick Smnith catalog with me to prove the price!

I'll keep you updated if OW come back to me again with a response.

my advice is dont be too tight on a couple of bucks. just buy it at MSY for $149 if u can. officeworks is so tight, they go to any extent to not give you the price match.

i ended up paying about $160 for it at officeworks so an extra $11 because its closer to me.

  • called up the brooklyn store in vic and they said $169 and its a misprint

    • I've got mine at the Ultimo store NSW and they have no problem, I've even manage to got them to put it on hold for me over the phone, so I guess it varies between stores.

      • are u able to show the receipt? if i tell them to call a store in NSW to verify will it be accepted?

        • +2

I can scan a copy of the receipt for you, whether they'll accept it is up to the store.

          http://upload.ozbargain.com/2009/05/31/1858_doc010609-001.pd…

          • @rurouni: they didnt give me the silver freeagent like you said. but they only give me the seagate external desktop drive. furthermore, when they called up the store MSY at boxhill said it's $169 and it's a misprint. officeworks only want to sell me the seagate external desktop drive for just above $160.

if theres an MSY near me selling the silver freeagent then i would go there and buy one right away.

edit - by the way are u sure that it's the silver freeagent they selling you for $149?

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: If they don't honor the deal even after you've shown them a copy of my receipt then I can't help you anymore. I haven't open the box yet but it said Seagate Freeagent Desk 1TB from the box, not sure if it's silver but I don't care about the colour anyway.

Just got home and open the box, it's exactly the silver Freeagent as the OW website.

              • +1

@rurouni: finally after so much hassling i was able to swap the seagate desktop for the seagate freeagent which cost $219 at officeworks for $160.55. this was at the maribyrnong store in VIC and i saw theres only 1 left.

but i suggest everyone to buy at MSY for $149 because i live closer to officeworks and you wont be able to price match it if you live in VIC. all the MSY stores they rang up said it's a mistake.

still a great deal considering the Maxtor Basics 1TB there go for around $169

            • @[Deactivated]: The seagate external desktop drive was on promotion at 9289 for $152.9, bought one and happy with it. I think the free agent drive just has some more software compared with the external desktop, which was not important for me. In my opinion, the external desktop looks better.
By the way, I had a look at the reviews of free agent drive at Newegg.com, and surprised that there were quite a few (25%) very negative comments.
Here is the link from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148…

              • @excite: thanks for the link. i personally think there are pros and cons for every brands. however, i already have a WD external hard drive. thats why i bought the seagate to spread the risks of it breaking down. furthermore, this comes with a 5 year warranty and i would be happy if it can last up to 5 years.

edit - im very happy with this because it has software encryption technology to keep my files private.

                • @[Deactivated]: Sure it has a 5 year warranty? Seagate have gone back to 3 years.

                  • @theguru1: the box on mine says 5 year limited warranty unless it's a mistake. can anybody confirm? i mean if the box say 5 year then if it break down and they dont anything about it then i will complain to the ombudsman to teach them a lesson

Even if OW accepts a price match, it would only save you $8.45 (5% of $149). Again, it is up to people to decide what they want to do and also it may depends on whether OW or MSY is more convenient for them. Just my own opinion, I won't go for a price match but will go to MSY instead. Over the weekend, I saw my local Dimmeys store closing down, perhaps, I guess, because of the fierce competition and economic crisis. This really makes me think, how would the overall competition in the market become? and I know I will be worse off a lot with the lack of competition in a very near future. This is what is happening in the banking industry with CBA and Westpac as many of you may have read on the news.

    • You make a very good point mrhappy…
If "we" only use MSY/uMart/GameDude/9289 et al as a source for price-matching at OW and don't actually support the smaller sellers with our custom, we take the chance of losing all competition to the mega retailers.
I must admit that I've been lazy myself in recent times and not bothered going to MSY when I can get the local OW to price match. GUILTY AS CHARGED!

If anyone is thinking of using the Seagate to watch movies from I wouldn't recommend it.
It lags a lot from constant streaming and isn't compatible with the WDTV.

  • Yeah it's a decent deal but MSY have a lot of cheap stuff, so to be honest, I always compared computer gear to MSY/ITEstate/Fluidtek etc.

  • +1

    It's actually a misprint..

    the price has changed..

  • Whoa nice the prices for hard drives have dropped. Time to stock up soon!

  • NEED HELP!

Guys, i am looking for a 1TB External HDD, Narrowed by choices down to Seagate FreeAgent and WD My Book Office. I checked the prices and as above Seagate is $169 (MSY) & WD is $199 (CPL). My main purpose is that it will be my Movie / Song / Backup, all in one drive. Mainly it will be used to be online 24/7 connected to utorrent etc. I prefer Seagate because of past experience and also it is cheap! Not worried about eSata as USB 2.0 is enough for me. Now as i have made my mind for Seagate, am a bit confused about the following:

    1. What is differnce between Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 1TB & Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1TB? Are they same or old / new model types? Have been looking on Seagaete website and i can only find Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1TB.

    2. Which one is sold at MSY? as i need to buy it asap as currently i am using Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 500GB (Brown with Yellow light) which was bought like 6-8 months ago and i need to return it. (Someone elses drive)

    3. Is Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1TB a wise choice or should i start thinking about WD My Book Office that also seems ok!

    Cheers.

P.S. I have checked and confirmed the warranty from official websites and Seagate FreeAgent Desk is 5years & WD My Book is 3years.

    • +1

I think the FreeAgent Desk & Desktop are the same thing, just people refer to it differently. Anyway the one in MSY is the version on the Seagate Website (silver with white light). I've bought it for 2 days now and have already backed up about 700G of data into it now without any problem, playing movies and music directly from the drive without any lag or delay. So overall I'm very happy with my purchase (esp at $149).

I've uploaded a copy of my receipt in one of the above reply, maybe you can use it to do price match/haggle with some other store?

      • Thanks for the help, i will try that but lets see if it helps. To be honest i am a bit lazy and i think i would end up at MSY anyway.

    • i heard that many people had problems with the WD my book. my personal experience with WD is terrible. they let you speak to some asian guy that i couldnt understand. they dont even wanna replace the AC adapter that was broken stating the warranty is only for the hard drive itself not the parts. and i only got it for 2-3 months.

my advice is buy several different brands and keep at least 2 copies of your files in separate locations.

      http://reviews.cnet.com/external-hard-drives/western-digital…

  • "WD My Book Office 1TB = $199"
I think you'd be referring to the WD My Book Essential Edition at that price.
The WD My Book Office Edition is a NAS type device. (I think it must be a typo' on the CPL pricelist).
    \_/7

  • If it is then hard luck for CPL as they have to sell it on that price. Isn't that the rule?
