You forgot to mention the price = $299

Yea it's an ok deal - considering it comes with Genuine XP Home ~ $150 value isn't it?

    • +1

I got an old Dell Optiplex GX270 P4 3.0GHz 1GB RAM 80GB HD COMBO XPP for $125 delivered.
Does that mean it actually cost me -$25?

  • +2

lol on first glance it looked like an xbox 360

  • +1

    Its $279 with Free Delivery.

    Our system is updated.

Please see photos for the way its packaged, make sure you are happy with that.

  • $279 with free delivery is OK, the $299 + delivery wasn't much better than every other refurbished PC deal out there. (e.g. http://www.greenpc.com.au/product/pentium-iv-30-cpu-only - also includes Office 2003 which is worth a couple of hundred itself, when new).

In general I wouldn't advise getting these, but hey, some people might want them.

  • I think it is a good deal. Even though it's old, for $279 you get a pc + monitor + XP. What more can we expect from that?

  • -1

Does the main board has PCI express slot. if it does, you can buy a graphic card (around $30), add another 1GB ram (around 20), and it's good to go even for gaming (at least you can play Wow on it).

    • +1

Nope, it's got an AGP slot and uses DDR RAM.

So you'd spend around $50-$60 on an extra 1GB of RAM, and about $100 or maybe $200 on a graphics card if you wanted decent gameplay.

      • I have a GX260 (same case) and you will need to have a low profile AGP card if you want to put it in these GX270s, which is not worth the hassle IMHO.

      • You want the next model, the gx280, for DDR2 and PCI-e.

This is a good deal mainly because of the free shipping.

To do the same at a computer shop new is a lot more.

Everyone should pass this deal onto those that want to spend very little on a computer.

    • +1

Why would you compare a computer that's 6 years old to a new one?

Compare it to other old ones (see my link above).

      • +1

The link your provided was for a computer with no monitor, keyboard or mouse.

And the company of that computer, Optima is a bankrupt company. Optima are very bad computers and fail easily.

        • +2

Well yeah, but you'll also notice it's significantly cheaper and has Office 2003.

But that wasn't my point. My point was it doesn't really prove anything comparing a new PC with full warranty to a 6 year old PC with a 3 month warranty.

EDIT Here ya go, if it'll make you happy, GX270 + 17" monitor for $259.

          • @[Deactivated]: $259 + $25 delivery in Sydney & Melbourne
            $35 delivery in Brisbane

So this deal is still better

            • @Scofield: I don't disagree.

But it hardly makes it a bargain, now, does it?

Also, I just googled for refurbished PCs. I'm sure if someone hunts around they can find cheaper.

I agree with tantryl…6 yrs old = wear and tear not to mention older technology (NB: it's not a wide screen monitor). We had these at work and they were never turned off at night.. As a result PSUs would often die and quite a few hard drives also packed it in.. Having built cheap (and reliable) systems in the past I would say not really a bargain..I'm not a fan of COTD either so buy at your own risk I say.. no doubt some will

  • FYI, the GX270s were the first of the Optiplex desktops to use S-ATA HDDs, so you can upgrade with the cheaper SATAs rather than the now-rare and expensive P-ATA(IDE) HDD.

  • Without the system restore disks it's a doorstop unless you have a means to reinstall windows (or prefer linux). However, at $279 delivered it's an ok deal AS LONG AS you can get them to replace broken in shipping monitors/drives/etc with no hassle. However, I doubt that'd be the case. Getting a new motherboard for one of these if it dies will be an even great PITA than a whitebox system of the same vintage. I wouldn't be sending anyone I know to this deal because of the above factors.

  • I actually have a GX270, with the same 2.8Ghz CPU…. and I know the machine very, very well. My work has LOADS of them, and they were getting rid of a few so I took one home. It was very dirty inside, but after stripping it completely apart, it now looks brand new internally. :) I've had it for around three months now, and it's a very reliable machine.

Mine came with 1Gb of DDR RAM, and a low-profile AGP GeForce4MX graphics card. I then added a spare 512Mb of RAM I had laying around (1.5Gb in total). Oh, and a SATA DVD-burner (the mainboard has one SATA port).

My GX270 has an IDE HD.

I installed Windows XP on it myself, and it runs great - it's now a nice little internet machine.

However, for the COTD machine, with 512Mb of RAM and only the onboard graphics… you'd be a bit limited. DDR RAM is very pricey, and low-profile AGP graphics cards are very hard to come by! Ideally you'd want to add another 512Mb of RAM in it…

  • I also inherited a surplus DELL Optiplex. Mine is a GX260/P4/2.4GHz in a mini-tower configuration (with plenty of drive-bays and a large PSU). It runs XP Pro SP3 just fine with 1GB RAM. It's all IDE, so I've 2 x HDD + 2 x DVD-ROM,R/W + the original 3.5" FDD. As with webbiegareth, mine too was choked with dust, but after a few thorough vacuum/blow cycles with an industrial strength Nilfisk (especially the PSU,,, switch-mode HT circuits don't mix well with dust and/or condensation) it has been running continually and as steady as a rock for the last 12 months as my file/print/media/torrent server.
So IMHO if you can get hold of an older PC for the right price, it can be quite capable of serving you well for a good while yet.

    Live Long and Prosper,
    Jean-Luc.
