  • Went down by 100 since I bought it. Good deal!

  • bf bought this for $698 from JB Hifi last week! The sadness :(

If you use a 28degrees card, their credit card insurance has price protection and allows you to claim the difference back within 6 months of purchase :)

He used cash -.- I have 2 credit cards with purchase price insurance :P He feels very cut

retailers may refund difference if wk old purchase…
      wont hurt in asking?

    • +2

Why said, this doesn't come with the keyboard attachment, so it's basically the same price.

      • YES! Good guy JB Hifi gave the $100 difference back :D

VERY tempted, but am compelled to go for the SP2 based on battery life alone…

How tolerable is that battery life? And is SD a viable medium for storing a couple of games on?

    • +3

Surface Pro 1 got me 3-4 hours of regular use and the Surface Pro 2 gets me 7-8 hours of use.

      • That's quite a substantial difference!

    • I'm more worried about the heat. I keep hearing that it gets uncomfortably hot.

      • Used my mates one regularly, I haven't noticed a problem….

    • Also the pro 2 is lighter in weight

      • Really, that's actually the first time I have heard this mentioned. How much of a difference is it?

Hmm, $400 savings are difficult to say no to though…

$599 with free delivery at Microsoft store

well microsoft sounds like a better deal, if u but a power cover which is 199 dollars you dont have to worry about battery life anymore, im stuck between this or waiting for a asus t100 deal..

      • Good point about the power keyboard, but for me the only stuff I do needing a keyboard happens while docked at my desk with external mouse and keyboard.

I've been living with an 11" 2010 (C2D) Macbook Air for the last few years which has similar or worse battery life to the 1st Gen SP, so I wonder if that means I can find an excuse to justify this one :)

i read in a previous post where an ozbargainer said he has bought the sp1 and he thought the battery life wont be that bad, than he went on to say that he was wrong and it was really that bad and he should have paid 300 more for the sp2… now taht the sp1 price is cheaper the difference is over $400 which makes the decision that much harder:/

  • This one is without the typing cover. I was happy to pay $100 more in the previous deal to have the cover. Mine lasts 4 hours on battery. I think the touch screen and interface is absolutely rubbish compared to some Android tablets. The onscreen keyboard is cumbersome and hides so much of what is going on that it makes you wonder if anyone at Microsoft used it before it went to market. The touch keyboard is essential with this in my opinion. Nice to have the Windows connectivity, but if you want a good tablet, grab a Galaxy Note. I do like mine, I'm just not sure why. The sooner Microsoft allows replaceable onscreen keyboards, the better. My Swype on phone and tablets easily outperforms the Microsoft keyboard.

You can drop the maximum processor speed (on battery) through the power savings settings.

Supposedly this can get you better than 4 hours battery life. I get 6 on wifi and a not-too-dark screen setting. (this is very unscientific testing). The stock charger is small enough to cart around and I bought an e-bay charger, MS bluetooth keyboard and mouse to leave at the office.

I got the $698 deal with free touch-cover. Touch-cover is very so, so. If you don't mind looking at the keyboard when typing, its okay. I certainly can't type at my usual 120wpm - drops to about 60wpm with lots of errors.

You're better off paying the extra $140 with deal and getting the back-lit type-cover 2. So in theory, you pay $40 more than last time and can get a working keyboard.
      FWIW.
I have a Surface RT (which my wife uses for watching videos, browsing internet and using light office).
I had a Surface PRO 2 and returned it due to warranty problems and it's been out of stock since.
I bought the Surface PRO @ $698 and can live with the lower battery life. I use the type-cover 2 as screen protector, etc.

I have a 11" Core 2 Duo Macbook Air through work.
My wife has a 13" Macbook Air that I use sometimes.

Surface PRO >> 13" MacBook Air >> IPad >> Galaxy Tab >> MacBook Air 11 (nobbled with XP).
Surface RT >> iPad. (no pen-ink support in either) Using a rubber crayon-pen to write is way too fiddly.

Inking is great on the Wacom-enabled Surface Pro 1/2. My 10+ year old Onenote hand-written notes from my Toshiba M200 come up and can be searchable. OneNote (free version) with SkyDrive/OneDrive integration is really good. The Office 2013 OneNote is good, but does not seem as fluid as the free version (or maybe I need to spend more time on both).

Being able to install Windows Apps is useful as well. Visio, Project, etc work great.

I popped in a 64gb MicroSD card and formatted with NTFS and bitlocker encrypted the disk. It's okay for downloads and skydrive local-copy syncing, etc.

Supposed Touchpal is a swype like alternative for Windows 8 - but the stock Microsoft touch-screen keyboard may pop onto screen and cause headaches…

Touchmouse point is good as well.

      YMMV.

  • so by that rational are you suggesting that spending money on a cheaper device is a smarter choice? one like the asus t100? comes with keyboard and great battery life, lacks cpu/gpu power of sp1 and does not have FHD screen. best price its been was the office works price match for $404 dollars which i sadly missed, i guess what ever deal comes up next that's close to that price, ill be pulling the trigger.

I wish that came back - I didn't take it up and am regretting it now

  • This is good one, I just bought it from HN last month $700 with surface touch cover. So, it seems not much save for this time.

  • Saw it on ebay US today as manufacturer refurbished for 449 USD… just in case anybody is over there/traveling to the US.

  • New model MS2 and MS Pro2 are in the shop soon, check it out.

Microsoft must be close to clearing out all their Surface 1 now. This is probably where all that 900m writedown went to.
