wow thats dirt cheap! surface pro for 499 or transformer t100 for 480ish…..
    decisions decisions.
    what do you guys think?

    • +3

Definitely the surface, better processor more ram and most importantly a 1080p screen

      • +4

and stylus…why do people forget the most important thing

        also free Office

        • +1

I dont think the Pros come with office unfortunately; only the RT versions and the cheaper Intel tablets from other manufacturers. It would be a huge value add for me if they did though!

        • Transformer T100 comes with office.

        • You can get that for free:) least of my worries

      • +1

        And the superb build quality.

    • T100 was for 404… A few months back

      • Correct. Been and gone. No use now.

    • Damn it gets harder and harder!!

    • +2

Depends on what you will use it for. Surface has much better specs, but the battery life is a joke. Battery on the T100 is around 3x longer.

      • +1

        and includes keyboard

  • thanks mate! decision made!

64gb difference for $100. Would it worth?

    • +7

128GB Surface Pro ships with 83GB free, 64GB has only 23GB.

It's a much bigger difference than it appears on the surface ;)

      • +1

You can get rid of the recovery partition and make a recovery USB drive instead, that will free up a bit of space.

    • +1

i use a 64GB sdxc card and have show up in my library (128pro)

      works real well

  • Wow! Half the price of the Pro 2! Not that you can buy it anywhere, anyway.

  • Is there still a $10 off voucher for new online signups?

    • +1

      It's $5, not $10.

  • +2

JB Hifi have the 128GB for the same price as Harvey Norman's 128GB. If that's more convenient for anyone else.

    • +3

      Actually it's $598 at JB so it's a dollar more expensive :)

  • Darn, I bought one from HN last Sunday -.-

    • +9

HN has 7 days price guarantee

  • Could anyone tell how is battery life?

    • +1

With some minor tweaks (turn down/disable some settings) can get a good 4-5hrs out of it. Also MS is releasing a Power Type Cover in 'Q1 2014' which should bring battery life on par with Surface Pro 2 with Haswell.

The power cover will be thicker than the current Type 2 cover though but is back lit with a 'mechanical' keyboard as per the Type 2 cover

Pretty poor by most accounts. That's whats holding me back personally.

      Here's a very comprehensive test:

      http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/microsoft/55475-surface-pro-…

Also remember that batteries degrade over time and what could be considered barely tolerable now, can easily be unacceptable in a year's time. They also cannot be disassembled for battery replacement without the use of a heat gun and are virtually impossible to put back together afterwards.

  • Does this built in have GPS?

    • No GPS unfortunately. Can use wifi location but as you probably agree, that's not the same

  • If i use surface for editing photo using photoshop/lightroom
    Is it a good choice?

  • +3

This isn't cheap compare to the price that was $698 before, and it included Keyboard attachment as well.

Deciding whether to buy now or wait for more reductions lol

    • +2

For an i5 ultrabook in a tablet form factor, I don't think you will see it much cheaper than this.

    • I'm in the same boat, 499 with touch cover definitely yes. But I'm not too sure now.

  • Just pulled the trigger on the 64GB to replace my Surface RT. Not looking forward to the decreased battery life but have found a need since I travel interstate a fair bit for work and don't have VPN access and also need to install some desktop apps like IBM Notes would be handy.

  • Hopefully now retailers eill reduce the t100 price, i just favor that tablet over surface because it works like a netbook "no stand" i just dont like the stand feature on the surface looks clumsy and not functional in certain scenarios

    • T100 battery life is well over double the surface's and has a real keyboard.

  • +1

As much as I am agonising over a purchase of this in the context of poor battery life, there's some sense in going for this cheap(ish) v1: you can bank that v3 will be slimmer/less bulky and as such those that spend $600 on v1 as well as those who spent $1200 on v2 alike will be wishing they had the v3 ;)

  • Anyone know how long this price is liable to be around? Would like to upgrade my asus tf300t to it, but need to sell that first!

    • I think it's a permanent price drop judging from how the Microsoft AU store is also selling these for about $600 as well, it's not listed as being on sale or anything.

  • what is the power requirements for the surface? can it be charged from a regular computer usb?

    • not, this is not using a baytrail atom cpu.

  • i bought the 64Gb $170 extra in december :(
depressing, I will get the surface pro 2 when it is under $450 in 2015 feb.

  • Damn no keyboard. Was about to get one.

  • Got mine from JB Hifi last week for $647 with touch cover (haggled a bit and got a good $50 off)

so yeah, this deal is okay I suppose. Keep in mind, touch cover is worth $99 so this is decent if you dont care for the cover.
