No, Crossfit is really not great. If you're going to practice that monstrosity hybrid of calisthenics, power lifting and bodybuilding then prepare yourself for injury— I guarantee that every single one of you will tear your hands every few weeks, and at least half of you will have shoulder injuries after a year or so.

        "exercise causes injury" - ausmechkeyboards

No, bad exercise causes injury. You don't have to injure yourself when exercising unless the exercises are fundamentally unsafe (see: crossfit). Grabbing ridiculous weights and throwing them around as far as your ROM can go, or lifting them up and down as quick as you can, isn't exercise.

Driving also causes injury, but there is a difference between careful driving and reckless driving.

        • As with any physical activity there is risk of injury. As with your driving example, there is a component of common sense and practising proper movement, training consistency and not being an asshat with stupid weights at the gym.

No reason to post a negative comment. No one is forcing you to join in. If you're not into it, leave it alone. Simple.

        • how about next time you try crossfit (when your shoulder heals) you actually use weights and movements you can handle? just cause you saw some youtube videos of someone doing kipping overhead squats or whatever doesn't mean you have to as well. It's not that hard to apply a bit of common sense.

And driving isn't what causes injuries, it's crashing. I don't think you really grasp this distinction.

        • as this guy said, wreckless driving causes injury. sure, careful driving can also cause injury, but there is a lot less possibility of this.

  • If you want to learn powerlifting - you are better off finding a qualified Strength and Conditioning coach or qualified and experienced Powerlifting coach. While there are many experienced powerlifters in the wide world - coaching is quite markedly different skill set. If you are seeking a coach/gym don't be afraid to ask the coach/gym owner is anyone in doing drugs (we are talking steroids, growth hormone and the like here - and YES you can buy them legally from 'special doctors' in Australia). If they look at you weirdly or appear to become uncomfortable it is probably a 'yes'. If you want to get strong do it naturally as the shortcut with drugs does have serious side effects ie if you have cancer or other diseases - growth hormone will grow these cells as well. Besides, some steroids will make you smell funny! (it's even worse than BO)

Not to discourage crossfitters - a common side effect of cross fit is Rhabdomyolysis. https://medium.com/health-fitness-1/97bcce70356d. Basically if after working out (or doing cross fit) and you dont drink enough water and experience side effects (some time later) such as dark, tar coloured urine - you must proceed immediately to the nearest emergency department for treatment.

    From Wiki
Rhabdomyolysis is a condition in which damaged skeletal muscle tissue breaks down rapidly. Breakdown products of damaged muscle cells are released into the bloodstream; some of these, such as the protein myoglobin, are harmful to the kidneys and may lead to kidney failure. The severity of the symptoms, which may include muscle pains, vomiting and confusion, depends on the extent of muscle damage and whether kidney failure develops. The muscle damage may be caused by physical factors (e.g., crush injury, strenuous exercise), medications, drug abuse, and infections. Some people have a hereditary muscle condition that increases the risk of rhabdomyolysis. The diagnosis is usually made with blood tests and urinalysis. The mainstay of treatment is generous quantities of intravenous fluids, but may include dialysis or hemofiltration in more severe cases.

Rhabdomyolysis and its complications are significant problems for those injured in disasters such as earthquakes and bombings. Relief efforts in areas struck by earthquakes often include medical teams with the skills and equipment to treat survivors with rhabdomyolysis. The disease was first described in the 20th century, and important discoveries as to its mechanism were made during the Blitz of London in 1941.[3] Horses may also suffer from rhabdomyolysis from a variety of causes.
