School Android/iPhone Apps NO Set-up & Design Cost Save up to $695 @ Pocket Schools

10

Hi Guys,

I have started a business recently and want to get it off to a good start so I am offering no set-up/design costs on building apps for schools and colleges.

I realise this might not appeal to a lot of users here but everyone knows teachers or has children in schools etc.

Monthly hosting and support is $49 p/m for iPhone and android and $59 p/m for iPhone, android & iPad + GST. Please note this is a minimum 12 months (No other hidden costs)

We usually charge $595 and $695 +GST for each plan for design and setup costs, but to push my business and build a name I am not charging this fee for new schools and colleges :)

Any feedback would be great also. Thanks for your support.

  • What backend are you using for this?

  • "Most Popular
    Standard Edition
    $49 / month"

If it's a new business how can that be 'most popular'?
It's like people who have an FAQ but make up their own questions based on what they want to answer, not what people would actually ask.

    • presumably because he has startup customers or customers from a beta type period and this is what most have chosen - seems pretty obvious?

    • I think as a business you can often safely guess at what will likely be the most frequently asked questions from your clients even when they haven't actually asked yet. As such, you can prefill a list with expected questions and then add to that list with ACTUAL questions asked over time.

I certainly went down that route when setting up my business website years ago. Its basically pre-empting what you expect the questions to be and saving you and the customer time in the long run.

The whole "most popular" before a business even has any clients is purely marketing spin directing customers at what you want them to buy.

  • Hi Guys no intention to mislead anyone we have had a few demos set up already and all have opted for the "49$" plan hence the wording.

    -Mike

    • Sorry, I wasnt intending my "marketing spin" comment to be directly at your business personally, just an explanation of what can sometimes occur in marketing in general. Good luck with your new venture by the way, I hope you do well.

      • Thanks for that :)

  • pocketschools - what differentiates you from Skoolbag? noticing that your service looks more expensive for schools under 500 students. I am keen to take on this kind of service but need convincing to go with a fresh startup rather than someone established, unless your product is uniquely different?

    • Skoolbag

Skoolbag ongoing cost works out much cheaper, $300 per year… This deal is almost twice that..
And you don't need to pay twice for iPhone and Android.

      • Thanks JV Yes you are correct if the school has 300 students or less Skoolbag would be $300 + 680 set up fee.

But we feel our price is fairer as a standard cost for all schools we feel is a better pricing decision. A lot of schools have excess of 500 even 1000 students so if you work out averages we feel we would come out cheaper for your average school.

Not to mention additional features we offer.

        • A lot of schools have excess of 500 even 1000 students

          And lots have 200-300 too…

Skoolbag works out much cheaper after 2 years and beyond… (even including set up costs)

        • There may be smaller schools but we have set our price based on averages. I feel we still work out cheaper over 2 years for the average school.

          ie. For 500 students (680 +500+500 for 2 years = 1680)

          This deal (49x24)= $1176

Thanks for the feedback, I would just like to add what we offer is more useful features than our competitors so this should be also taken into consideration.

It's kind of like comparing a Ford to a BMW.

        • This deal (49x24)= $1176

That's very misleading. Skoolbag price includes Android and you charge $120 extra per year for that…

It's kind of like comparing a Ford to a BMW.

          Which one are you?
Fords are more reliable, get you from A to B and much much cheaper to maintain…

        • Hi JV,

Actually for $49 p/m the android and iPhone apps are included and it is not an additional $120 per year. I'm not sure where you got that figure from.

          Thanks

        • It's kind of like comparing a Ford to a BMW.

          Which one are you?
          Fords are more reliable,

jv, I'm giving your comment a + based purely on its humourous content!
I'll be sure to show this to a few mates tomorrow as I know it'll give them a good laugh as they pull yet another head off a late model Falcon!

    • Hi iamcerberus,

Thanks for the question. We do offer a very similar service to "Skoolbag".

What differentiates us? We feel we offer more features that are useful for schools like uniform/canteen ordering within the app :http://www.pocketschools.com.au/uniform-canteen-ordering/

Also we offer the teacher meetings feature with all apps which is very handy and some schools already pay for this service separately.

Apart from this I feel our apps are designed more professionally and the UI is easier to use and nicer. Please note this is only my opinion. I'm happy to take criticism and feedback as to areas I can improve.

Finally "Skoolbag" also charge $680 +GST for set-up and with this offer we are waiving set-up/design costs so that is quite a substantial discount we feel.

I'm happy to take criticism and feedback as to areas I can improve.

      Thanks :)

      -Mike

      • Finally "Skoolbag" also charge $680 +GST for set-up

        That's once off…

But you charge $59/m = $708 per year

        • Yes that is correct but please note that price includes and iPad specific app specific which Skoolbag doesn't.

As you can see from our preview app we have put a lot of time into it and feel the quality is greater than that of our competitors.

        • +1

and feel the quality is greater than that of our competitors.

Many of the schools where I live are already on Skoolbag…

Unless you can compete on price and features to differentiate, I don't think having a specific iPad version is going to cause them to switch across. Especially if the iPhone version works fine on the iPad.

  • Hmm, this sounds exactly like an app generation service that got posted here last year - and got deleted. It was trying to flog off low quality apps to restaurants, lawyers, etc.

It was very template stuff - the logo got switched out, etc. but the general standard was as low as you might expect from bucketware.

They all seem to run off the same basic framework - tabs and simple linear menus is it IIRC. They were the types of apps that got deleted in apple's and google's periodic clean outs.

I should get a reference to a real app, in the real play store, if I were you - if they exist. You can then see for yourself. Particularly important for Android IIRC - the app was a bit of a mess on different size/shape screens.

In general, for an app, you are looking at a minimum of $50k for a professionally produced app, for one platform. If you see someone advertising for less, ask for play or app store link - or even better they should be pointing you at one to show off.
