Too bad it's not 0 annual fee for life… I have the HSBC credit card with rewards & no annual fee.

    • +1

I applied for the card to get the points , mainly the Westfield $150 voucher for 30000 points . Once I recieve it , I'll cancel the card

      • +4

That sounds bad for your credit history :/

        • +21

Not planning on ever getting a loan because Ozbargain has saved me millions of dollars :D

        • +2

I have always wondered if doing so would affect the credit history? I have kept about 6-7 credit cards and have recently applied for a loan too, there was nothing that was flagged regarding the credit history.

As long as you don't default the payments etc, I don't think it affects the credit history?

        • +7

          It does.

Every 3 months I order my credit report from Duns & Bradstreet tps://www.checkyourcredit.com.au - it costs bugger all (or free if you're willing to wait 10 days to receive it)

Once you get it, have a look at the "enquiries" section. Every Credit Card/Loan/Interest free etc you apply for will first go to your credit file and and this is where their mark is left (as well as the corresponding total you're applying for)

Now this isn't a huge deal for most, as banks generally only look at how many enquiries you've done in the last 6 months, however recently I was denied a card, even though I have no black marks and perfect credit, because of many OzBargain deals I had gone through 4 cards in the 6 month period, as well as an interest free from Jerry which totaled 5 enquiries in 6 months. Despite solid income etc, they wouldn't have a bar of it.

          Hope this helps.

PS - I'm using "enquiries" & not "inquiries" as this is how its worded on your credit report. Not that you probably care :-)

        • If you request for a copy of your credit report, is that considered an enquiry?

        • Certainly is…. Under the "Accesses" section. However:

"Accesses are recorded on your credit report for your information only, for you to know who has accessed your credit report and can only be viewed by yourself. Credit providers and other organisations are not able to view this information."

      • Might not be very wise move with the new changes in credit reporting: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/136066

        Also see http://creditsmart.org.au/what-has-changed

These changes will take time: Some credit providers don’t use credit reports at all to make their credit decisions. Others will continue to use the current ‘negative’ credit reporting system. Credit providers that hold an Australian credit licence may adopt comprehensive credit reporting, but may do so at different times.

SO these changes wont happen overnight. Its going to take time, and as we know change is a big thing for companies because they have to invest in new systems, processes, time, projects etc

And from my experience at the place i work, it takes 2 - 3 years for a change to take effect

        • To me that doesn't look too different to the UK credit system. And getting a new card/closing an old one every now and again has virtually no impact on your rating over there - so I don't see why it would in Australia.

Is there something I've missed - or are all these rumours just a "fear of the unknown" type thing?

          Hi guys,

This is actually my area of work :O so I just thought if state some facts that I am aware of:

          • Every time an individual applies for credit at a bank/credit union, a credit check is completed (I'm not sure about this for your small lenders). This is generally done by Veda, a credit bureau.

          • When banks build credit models, one variable which is generally significant is the number of enquiries by a customer, which Veda provides to the banks. If you have 1 or 2 enquiries, it won't be a biggie, but >5 could cause a problem.

          • The new credit reporting standards mean that "positive" banks can view your behavioral history with other banks. They already have access to your number of enquiries through Veda - even if they are "negative" on these new standards.

Hopefully this clears things up and apologies for the long comment :)

        1. Bonus 30,000 points offer is available to HSBC Platinum Credit Card holders who make an eligible purchase within 3 months of applying for their card. Points will ordinarily be credited within 2 months of making an eligible purchase.
  • +2

Don't forget you pay the annual fee up front and they credit it back after the eligible purchase.

  • +1

I coudn't find what is an eligible purchase for the 30000 points?
Also @Jesseboy89, cancelling your own credit card which has good credit history, bad for your credit rating? Why so?

    • Just the having an unnecessary credit application on your file for years.

  • I will get a Citibank one instead which is NO annual fee for life. I believe it's still valid.

    • You get no bonus points with that . I'd imagine most of us are applying to redeem the bonus points and then cancel the CC

      • No. You get Citibank points… 1.25 per $1 on platinum and 1.5 on signature.

        • +1

What EC means is you don't get bonus points upon signing up.

I believe the purpose of this post is for people to sign up, grab the $150, and leave. No sticking around.

  • Cancelling a credit card with no outstanding credit doesnt give you a bad cc rating…

Otherwise signing up for a credit card would be like getting a bad STD. One bad choice and it sticks with you for life.

    • It doesn't give you a "bad one" but the number of credit checks on your report does impact it. Believe they kick around 5 years. Go do a credit check yourself at vedacheck.

      • They do stay on file for a long time, but banks will generally only take into account the last 6 months of searches.

And a couple of searches over years means absolutely nothing. They only really get concerned if you've done several in a short space of time.

Term & Condition 2: Bonus 30,000 points offer is available to HSBC Platinum Credit Card holders who make an eligible purchase within 3 months of applying for their card. Points will ordinarily be credited within 2 months of making an eligible purchase.

    What is "eligible Purchase"?

    • +2

      a stick of gum

      • normally I just add the credit card to PayPal and their few cents verification deduction is enough.

Looks interesting. Since HSBC can't be bothered providing the link to the insurance cover, here it is for anyone interested (second link down on page —> PDF): ZURICH INSURANCE DETAILS The list of exclusions as long as your arm, and a $200 excess applies in many cases. Pffft!

  • Ummm amazing! $150 free money- why aren't there more votes?

  • Guys, Is there a bank in Australia offering Credit cards which has no Annual Fee at all for life ? I need one. Please suggest.

  • Nice find - I guess a fair enough reward for the hassle of applying - direct debiting and canning etc. Thanks OP, signed up for one.

  • I'm conditionally approved . Faxed them 2 pay slips

    • +6

Payslips? with the million of dollars you saved, I thought you don't even need to work:D

    • +2

      Fax!!

  • whr does it say how much to spend to be eligible for the points?

    • Here is the answer from T&C

2 - Bonus 30,000 points offer is available to HSBC Platinum Credit Card holders who make an eligible purchase within 3 months of applying for their card. Points will ordinarily be credited within 2 months of making an eligible purchase.
3 - Purchase excludes business expenses, interest free promotions, interest free merchant purchases, balance transfers and cash advances. Rewards Program terms, conditions and points capping limits apply.

    • I'm a HSBC customer but I chose the Citibank card instead for the lifetime fee free offer. Happy with it so far.

  • any know if the 30000 HSBC points can be changed to QFF if you link your account up during sign up?

30000 QFF is worth more :)

    • Yeh I know , I was searching through their rewards portal to see if they have that option but couldn't find any info . If I get my card, I'll call and ask if it's possible

  • Good deal, thanks OP. Will apply for one. Surprised this is not getting more votes.

  • So you cannot make use of the 30k points AND 8 months 0% balance transfer at the same time?

    • U can. Apply for credit card and apply for balance transfer at the same time. Then make a shopping for minimum amount such as 20 cents or something at Woolworths etc. U will be getting bonus points, free balance transfer and u will be paying 1 cent per month interest on purchases

  • Anybody know if having a Woolworths credit card makes you an existing customer?

  • +2

got approved and my card is on its way. Its been a good year so far. $50 Card from Virgin Credit card, $100 Cashback commonwealth card, $100 bonus ANZ bank account and $150 from this HSBC card. Thats $400 in total. A few more cashbacks and i can get a SG5 for that money :D

    • Or get Nexus 5 at the moment…:D

      • also got approved for the coles mastercard with $75 free shop, makes total $475.

Any more cashbacks, me wants my free "earned" SG5

        • I guess OZbargainer award of the year should go to You..:d

        • -1

Do you have a wife :D

    • Did you manage to get your points converted to QFF?

      • no, not for this card apparently. Then have a different card you can convert award points to QFF

    • Hi,

Could you please share the link for the other cashbacks that you have got so far? Especially, ANZ, Virgin and CBA…

      Cheers,
      Shakti

  • Thanks OP.
Submitted ID check at AusPost the other day.

  • Finally approved. Took ages to prove my address because I've just moved and it isn't the address on my driver's license. I ended up sending them my proof of enrolment from the electoral commission, although they had no idea what that was at first. Funny how neither the electoral commission or the department of licensing required proof of my new address, yet other organisations accept their word as proof; i.e. they use an unverified source to verify information.

    • Maybe it would have been easier to change your address at the RMS (or whatever it is in your state) first?

      • I did several weeks ago and am still waiting for them to send the new address sticker to put on my license.

  • Card received, spent on card. Will post when points come through.

  • +1

Btw, you should be able to transfer 30000 points 2:1 to Asia Miles for better value than a $150 gift card.

    • how to do this?

  • For those who asked for balance transfer … when you get the card and info pack … do they specify the balance transfer upfront?
Or you have to call up and arrange a balance transfer?

    Thanks

    • Does anybody know how much of the limit they'll BT? 80%? 100%?

  • Signed up and got my card within a week. They didn't contact me at all saying I was approved or whatever.

Just made my first purchase yesterday, so I'll let you guys know if they points come through. I took a screenshot of the the promotion anyways, just in case…

  • activated the card and got told that the annual fee doesnt get charged unless i make a purchase. i wonder if this is true? might buy a grape for 5 cents at coles within 3 months to get my 30k points since i did a bt which was processed even before i activated the card.

    • +1

The annual fee is free for the first year. I spent $1.55 on some taco seasoning from Coles. Now the waiting game begins.

  • still no points for me…

    • It will take up to 2 months

  • They sure want alot of info to approve card - payslips, bank statements, employment letter, tax assessment & super assessment. Never had that with any of the other cards.

  • +1

Has anyone used the 0% balance transfer & get the bonus points? I assume to get the benefit of both, one would make a tiny purchase like $0.50 to avoid interest on the balance transfer.

  • just got my first credit card statement

have been charged with annual charge of $129.

also received the 30,000 bonus points.

    • looks like I have to wait 2 months;

"An annual fee of $129 usually applies, however HSBC has arranged for this to be waived in the first year for HSBC Platinum Credit Card holders who make an eligible purchase within 3 months of applying for their card. The amount of $129 will normally be credited within 2 months of making the eligible purchase. Eligible purchases exclude interest free promotions, balance transfers, business expenses, cash advances, fees or charges, any disputed transactions, BPAY® and any government fee or charge."

    • I got charged annual fee but have not yet received my points…

      • Me too. Have you received it now?

        • Made first purchase on 28/04 and still waiting for points. I have been credited the annual fee.

  • got the card, but didnt see anywhere regarding my requested balance transfer. do I need to call?

  • has anyone redeem their points yet?

    • I have, waiting on it to arrive now.

      • got my $150 of coles vouchers.

        • how long did it took?

        • about 1 week to arrive.

  • Wonder if they will pay you back the annual fee in cash if you cancel it after they give the money back.
Otherwise, need to make $129 worth of purchases.

    • Just get cash advance from an ATM.

    • Too late to do a balance transfer? :)

  • I got charge annual fee but got 30,000 points.

  • Got my first statement today.
Got the 30000 points after making a $2 purchase but also copped the $129 annual fee.

  • Rang the number in.the statement and check balance, now $2. Yipee

  • I was just calling up now after receiving my statement a couple of days ago that included the annual fee.
Automated phone banking told me my account balance was just $18.50 (the only purchase I made).

Sure enough, internet banking shows a credit
14/04/2014 MARKETING PROMOTIONAL CREDIT $129.00 CR

Card first used 21/3. Annual fee charge 9/4 (and statement dated through to 9/4).

  • great, also got my $129 credited.

  • Damn HSBC told me first that I wasn't eligible for the annual fee being waived, then said they could waive half only, then said I'd have to wait another month.

  • Anyone had their annual fee waived but haven't received the points yet?

It's been a month since my purchase.

  • I made a purchase for $1.55, got my points and was charged $129 fee. I transferred $130.55 onto the card before I knew the fee would be refunded so quickly. I've sence spent the remaining $129. Now at a $0 balance, with my $150 Wish cards in hand… it's time to close the account.

    • how long did it take to get hte gift cards? I redeemed two weeks ago but still nothing in the mail yet.

also how long did it take for them to waive the fee? I've been charged the fee but no refund yet (been around 2 weeks)

      • got my gift cards in 1 week

        • Yeah, I got my cards in 1-2 weeks. The fee was waived soon after the first statement arrived.

Edit: I've now closed the account. I said the reason was because I just applied for a home loan and they need me to close my credit card accounts. Of course they tried to entice me to stay. First they offered to waive the annual fee (which was funny since it was already waived, and that wouldn't help my home loan application). They they pointed out that the platinum card can also be used for purchases (imagine that! a credit card that can be used for purchases!). The they finally offered the reasonable option of reducing the limit, but I declined and they finally closed it.

  • purchase made 26/4, annual fee charged and refunded, but still waiting on the points.

  • I made a purchased a month a go, checked internet banking, no annual fee was charged & waived & also no point was credited.
    anyone got same situation?

    • mine went smoothly, annual fee charged on statement date, points credited 24hrs later. Then annual fee waived ~ 2 weeks after,

    • Yeah I got charged annual fee, then it was waived - and now waiting on points too.
