great router. generally buy it for circa 130 online. Have had no problems with dropouts or connectivity

  • its look version 1

  • +1

If it's a DGND3700v1, it works with VDSL2 as well, though the router itself is a little less reliable.

    • +1

The router is decent but not that great. I've gone through quite a few routers over the years and I find that Billion is the most reliable.

My last router was this exact model; replaced it with a billion 7800 DXL.

Price is okay. I got the WNDR3800 for about 80 with the cashback a while back. The main reason I'd get this router if you wanted a router capable of Gargoyle.

    • +2

Good to know, I just get odd looks whenever I ask a salesperson whether any of their routers can Gargoyle.

Edit: initially thought Gargoyle was gigabit autocorrected, now I see it's custom software. Joke's on me!

    • +2

To be clear, the DGND3700 router in this deal is not compatible with Gargoyle.

  • Interesting. Looks like the same router on dse front page as a hot deal dse link
Dicks deal not so hot @$179

  • Good price. Bought one and gave it back about 2 months ago. The internal antenna was not strong enough in my house. Got a TP Link with 3 x 5 db antennas and it works much better.

    • I am looking to buy a new router with the option of having an extended external antenna. Noticed that D-link and Netgear don't seem to have the option for adding/modifying external antennae. Like you, looks like TPlink is the way to go for me, what do the decibels (dB) represent for the antennae? the higher the dB the better?

      • +1

Yes, the higher the better. Many have only 3dB… so I was sold on the 3 x 5dB which are also unscrewable and replaceable too.

Heres an eBay link for some extra boost antennas. Guy from work is using them to transmit video feeds that previously couldn't get picked up, so they must be at least half decent.

      • Thanks Heaps!

      • Just a reminder, these are from Hong Kong so expect 2-4 weeks on delivery. These are for people who don't mind waiting.

I have tried two of these and returned both. The USB sharing and DLNA was very buggy. Range was also average. Lots of "don't buy" reviews online too.

  • I like this modem. I have one. Version 2. Nit a massive fan of netgear, but this one is awesome. No issues with WiFi connectivity even outside my house. I never reset it only stare at the pretty lights :)

i got mine price beat at officeworks for $102.45 around 8 months ago

  • Bought one a few years ago. Works well… no issues. USB port not very fast.

Too bad it does not support QoS

    • Where do you get that idea from? A look on the product specs of manufacturers site say they are.
      http://netgear.com.au/home/products/wirelessrouters/high-per…

I saw a forum post from someone saying it doesn't do QoS from incoming data but I didn't think that's how QoS worked in the first place (at least not on the part of the modem/router).

      • I have this router, no downstream QoS, only upstream- which is useless for me.

    • will if you install gargoyle ;) works like a champ

      • Can you install gargoyle on this model?

  • If anyone is after a cheap Router I have a D-Link DIR-825 (brand new) for $30.00.

I have owned this router and used it for around 2 years now and these are my thoughts,

    Pros:

    • The performance is pretty good
    • Quite reliable
    • Usb drive support
    • Lots of tweaking options
    • You can use it as a router only

    Cons:

    • QoS is only upstream
    • DLNA server is buggy as hell and disconnects often
    • Not much support for custom firmware because it's a modem/router
    • Rather poor range

Right now I have a R7000 linked up to it in preparation for when I get cable installation.
In my opinion experience with a standalone router and a modem is much nicer than the combo, it is a lot more flexible in the custom firmware (running DD-WRT right now and runs like a dream with all the bells and whistles esp. QoS) and the router is generally of a much higher calibre.

Overall, it is a good modem/router but certainly not the best experience possible.

P.S: Despite the usb ports being blue, they aren't USB 3.0, only 2.0.

  • Your much better off with an TP Link TD W8980, you can buy one of those for the same price!

  • As someone who purchased this router getting little change from $250.00, this hurts to see.

If you want to use this as a DLNA server then please avoid it like the plague. it just doesn't work as it should, and Netgear don't give a rat's clacker about fixing it, despite happily advertising DLNA as a feature.

I'd personally never touch Netgear again, not just because of this, but also the craptacular, dropout-addicted WNDA3100 adaptor.

    • All of their products have different chipsets, though, and even their user interfaces differ between models.
I wouldn't avoid Netgear due to one bad product.

I actually use exactly one of these as my VDSL2 modem (gets me 100Mbps on a specific ISP in Canberra) with a D6300 attached as my main router, even providing local IPv6 support.

I agree that most of their USB sticks leave a bit to be desired, so I don't use them - I use an ASUS PCIe wireless AC card in my gaming PC, and the built-in Broadcom chip in my laptop.

Mix and match, and everything still works.

    • Agree. I also failed to mention that their phone support was crap. Their answer to everything was reset and then return to the store.

Ps the remote print function for me simply did not work. Lots of promises on the packaging with little delivery.
