Excuse the hardware noob, but whats the difference between mSATA and sata? I see it has no casing or anything, is it just a thinner drive?

    • +1

its a card, more like the size of a modem expansion card for laptops.

      • +1

So theoretically it would fit in any normal sata ports?

        • +4

No it's like a pci slot. it's in high end desktop motherboards too.

        • +1

if you have to ask, most likely your laptop doesnt support it

        • Ah i see. Nah, i dont need one, i already have a SSD in my desktop and laptop, i was just curious. Thanks for your help guys!

        • +3

You can buy an adapter that'll allow you to use mSATA in a regular SATA bay.

        • Tonyjzx, that's possibly true in some cases but Im sure that many people just throw dollars at buying an expensive laptop without ever really knowing what its features are (possibly not the type of people that visit Ozbargain though.)

Is there a converter or bracket to use this for a desktop, say convert this to a 2.5 inch SSD?

  • +1

Yes, another Crucial SSD deal! $10 cheaper then last week's mSATA deal.

well it's not really hard to see the trend

    • +2

      new Crucial m550 just released

Tempted to have a RAID 0 setup with 6 of these babies!

    • Do it.

    • +1

A motherboard with 6 MSATA slots, that would be nice!

  • +2

Isn't this the model where the write speed is about half the read speed? Does it matter?

    • +1

Yes the write speed was low but not too bad on the 240gb model, still a bit lower than other models at this price point. Not sure if you'd notice though. :)

  • god its like amazon knew my msata just died

  • If you purchased this last week, will Amazon give you a refund for the difference?

    • Yes…just chat with their customer service.

    • I've Gotten TWO refunds now! because they keep dropping in price.
      Great policy.

  • In before nuc deals

  • +2

I've requested a refund on the price difference $4.30… done… ThanksOP

  • Sigh, I purchased the samsung EVO from shopping express a month ago and have used it less than 3 weeks! Now it appears I can get the same capacity for $60! less! Damn.

I have 2 of these in my Clevo laptop (not raided) and they are great drives. The only problem is I now wish I got 2 480gb ones as they are almost full.
I've been using the laptop solidly for about 9 months now with them and they haven't skipped a beat.

  • @OP

Might want to change the link, it links to a 480gb SSD.

Edit: Nevermind, just gotta change the option to 240gb.

I am trying to buy the 2.5 inch version….

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BQ8RM1A

but it's adding $9 delivery. Is there a way to make this $117 delivered as well?
Or is the $117 on the mSata one only?

    • +1

Well, the 2.5" version is bigger and heavier, so surely postage would reflect this?

still, $9 delivered from the US is cheap…considering that most PC shops in Australia would charge you the same amount if not more to post an SSD…

My dell inspiron laptop came with following storage: 1TB 5400 rpm SATA Hybrid Hard Drive with 8GBCache. I am wondering if we can replace the 8BG cache with this SSD or is it embedded in the HDD?

I read the manual but the only relevant info I could find was:

    Storage Interface SATA 6 Gbps
Hard drives - One 2.5-inch drive(supports Intel Smart Response Technology)
Solid state drives (optional)- one solid state drive (SSD) with Intel Smart Cache support

    • +1

Perhaps have a chat to Dell about it?
You can chat with them live via below link: http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/chat/cont…

If your Inspiron still has warranty, it won't void it also unless you somehow damage the parts when replacing it.

    • if its a hybrid drive, then likely is the seagate momentus hybrid.. which has non-user replaceable ram.

  • Damn… bought it in the last round a month ago, now the price has dropped again! Had a chat with Amazon, no luck with the refund. Only valid if the delivery is within a week of the price drop.

I feel like an idiot, I purchased the 2x Sandisk 64GB SSD for $120 and now a single 240GB is the same price here http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BQ8RM1A

    Whats the difference?

    • 2x Sandisk 64GB SSD… Sandisk Extreme / Extreme II? Generally, a 64GB SSD does not have the best specs in the series (so it does not have the same max write speed, read speed etc… compared to the 240GB SSD sibling). So even though Sandisk Extreme is faster than M500… a 64GB Sandisk Extreme could be / probably is slower than a 240GB M500.

It really depends on what you intend to use the SSDs for. 2x64GB SSDs are okay for 2 old PCs.

Crucial M500 is heavily discounted at the moment… probably because M550 is out.
