Bear in mind, Geekbuying do not charge in AUD anymore… On the checkout page it reverts to USD.

  • Will this decode AC3 and DTS from an MKV video??

    • Yeah interested in knowing that as well if anyone knows… I have a minix Neo G4 that does it.

    • Nope..I believe it's not supported

    • Hi,

I am not sure right now. I will confirm it soon.

    • Hi,

I have tested it. It can decode AC3 and DTS from an MKV video very well.

  • Cortex A9 Rk3188T —> restrict to 1.2GHz

  • What are these? Do they do what a WDTV does? More, less? How do you control it?

    • +7

It's an internet enabled media player that runs Android — and runs Android apps. You plug these into your TV, and it is typically powered by a Micro USB port.

You can control these via an ordinary USB device by plugging them into the USB-OTG port, but more recently these TV sticks feature bluetooth which means you can use a handheld bluetooth keyboard or air-mouse to control them. It has WIFI too, so it is possible to remote-control these using your Android phone.

You can install all kinds of media-center software on it, XBMC or PLEX.

It's way better than a WDTV….you can control it with your Android smartphone, any ordinary or wireless USB keyboard/mouse, Air mouse (like Mele F10 pro) or something with this : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/137445

You can connect any of your USB webcams, and you can video chat on your TV via skype.

You can download Torrents etc.. play movies from your HDD, network etc.

      Can install Netflix, XBMC etc…

The possibilities are unlimited…it basically makes your TV a smart TV.

It turns your TV into a giant Android tablet. You can hook up external hard drives and use them in a similar fashion to media players.

Hi, please read this article: http://tvbox.geekbuying.com/tvbox/guide

    • Plus votes for all yall

Thanks, I think I might grab me one. My LG DP1W must be dying, its getting as tad slow.

  • What's this like with xbmc as a htpc ?

    • I have got no experience with this particular model…. But I have a Minix Neo G4 which is kinda lower specs than this, it does XBMC pretty good without any problems.

  • Far out. Many questions and no answers yet. Not even any positives on the deal. At this piece I'm interested but…..

    Off to google reviews.

I use something like this to watch movies from, never had any problems as its android and powerful enough to do most stuff :)
I would have thought these would have been cheaper in price by now.

    • $50 US for what is essentially a stand alone computer is pretty good if you ask me!

Reminds me of the time I went to buy a passive ethernet female-female connector (to connect two ethernet cables together to make one longer one). Turns out buying a 4 port gigabit powered switch was less than half price!

Don't forget that Harvey Norman will sell you a standard HDMI cable for $150….

Same old issues with other Android sticks

    1. Stock kernel is 720p. 1080p might or might not work
    2. Laggy h264 playback
    3. Unstable wifi connection

It's OK as a toy but would not be an ideal HTPC candidate

I think your information is outdated :)

    • The reviews for it seem to be quite mixed

Though I have a feeling many of the people who bought this product may not have bothered to flash a custom ROM, or don't know what a custom ROM does.

      • I have the older Tronsmart Dual core MK808b from Geekbuying and never had any problems once I flashed a Custom ROM.
Mine does 720p nicely, but 1080 was too laggy for my liking and our sitting distance puts us into the realm of indeterminance to perceive much/any quality advantage.

Flashing is a bit of a pain, but worth it.

Slightly related. I have a Tronsmart phone from geekbuying. It has:

    • 1 dead pixel
    • software that copies a 25mb tronsmart promo video onto every muSD card inserted as well as the internal storage, delete the file and it will just reappear. Once rooted easy to remove app that causes this.
    • android apps that get downloaded and installed without my permission, no idea the source (not a hacked gmail account as no other android device I have does it)

Because of these I wouldn't buy a Tronsmart device again, too much unknown happening in the background.

Geekbuing themselves are prompt with communications although somewhat useless as far as support goes. The last email was basically "sorry, sucks to be you, here are 4 links to seemingly random websites, try rooting your phone. k thanks bye."

I would probably buy from Geekbuying again, but just note there is next to zero after sales support.

  • I've got a similar device. Great at playing videos, but the big drawback is the lack of infra-red remote support. You can use your phone or buy a third-party remote or wireless keyboard/mouse, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having a universal remote (e.g. Logitech Harmony).
    I don't understand why HDMI-CEC isn't a common feature in these devices.

  • you don't need to bother to root again

Oh I'm definitely going to bother

  • So any recommendations here? This one, or a better one.I dont mind spending $100?

    • Sorry I keep promoting Minix products because I simply love their products and above all their development support. (I am not associated with Minix in any way, I am simply a user of their product). I have wasted a lot of money on other brand Android dongle Andover have finally settled on Minix.

If you can spend a little more, I suggest going with Minix Neo X7, if it's too expensive, probably go with with Minix Neo X5, if not then simply go with Neo G4.. To make it a complete package you may wish to buy a good brand AC powered Usb hub (Belkin or Dlink etc) $15, a wireless keyboard with touchpad e.g. Logitech K400r $35 and a USB ethernet $5 if you need wired connection …. Install XBMC and you are ready to go. :)

Ii have a MK808B which connects wirelessly to the router and plays movies off the nAS and I use a $15 Wireless mouse from MSY to control it. All going perfectly, plays mkv format as well . I think it's worth the price

I'm getting one. My couple of years old ug802 is still going great. It gets heaps of use playing downloaded movies and tv show of any format and my wifes Candy Crush, etc etc games.

Don't need this but i want it.

  • I have a tronsmart t428… besides the constant crashes it goes OK… the latest kitkat update has made it pretty stable…

was unable to play a few files and some file playback was really chunky (uses the same chip as the one in this post) however, transcoding with PLEX solved all my problems… I now love plex.

  • Although it says expired, this is still going until about 2pm today (Qld time). If DST is still active, it will be 3pm AEDST.
