Microsoft Australia Online Surface Pro - 128GB AU $599.00

60

I brought my surface pro at $1099 last year when it was just released. I use it every day and it meets all my needs. At $599 this is absolutely a bargain.

    • I just bought it from JB this week. $574.08

$597 Harvey Norman. So not absolutely a bargain.

    • But can get cashback from start here 7.5%.

      • you get more from Qwibble.

but its only 1.6% cashback from quibble and 1% to 1.5% from starthere

  • How is this compared to using an average 13" laptop for:

    a) everyday business / word processing / some basic image scaling
    b) weight
    c) battery life
    d) keyboard and mouse support

I bought it at the student price a few weeks ago.

It's great, but to answer your questions…

      a) It's okay - I wouldn't want to be doing any hard core word processing on it without a proper keyboard. I have the Type Cover 2 which is great but it's really not up to a 2000 word essay.
      b) Weight - fine. You can't really hold it in one hand very long but it's certainly not heavy. Lighter than any lap top I've ever felt.
      c) People tend to carry on about the battery life and try comparing it to 'proper tablets' - which this really isn't. It's more a full PC in tablet form. Anyway, I've never really had any problems you are probably looking at 4-5 hours, bit less for intense gaming or watching a video.
      d) Any keyboard and mouse that works with Windows will work with the SP.

      • "d) Any keyboard and mouse that works with Windows will work with the SP"

Which is a real bonus over the likes of other tablets that don't have a USB port!

      a) You'll need a keyboard and a mouse if you want to do heavy work. You may feel the the screen is not big enough compare to a desktop.
      b) Heavier than an ipad but lighter than a mac book air. Comfortable enough to be hold by hands when browsing the internet on bed.
      c) Battery usually lasts 4 to 5 hours, it is not a problem for me since I could access an electrical outlet.

I bought one of these on the weekend from JBHiFi Nunawading. They do not do student discount officially and Harvey Norman actually wouldn't even hear me out but JB came to the party and gave me a 10% discount anyway. It is an awesome device for my daughter at Uni, light, fast and the Wacomm stylus is very nice to use. For the money this thing is the best out there. Only downside is that with normal use, browsing, taking notes, looking at powerpoint slides etc she gets about 5.5 hrs battery which is just enough for her longest uni day of the week.

You shouldn't have brought, you should have bought.

  • Got 2 questions:

    1. Should i get this or surface pro 2.
    2. Anyone got microsoft store promo code?

    Thank guys

      1. This. I believe the only real difference is a 4th gen processor (same specs) and the couple hours more battery life you get from it. 4ish vs 6ish hours. Worth $500?
      2. Be a student, or obtain a .edu email address. $539 is what I paid.

      1. A few slight 'improvements' too, apart from what Michael15286 posted. The kickstand has two different positions and the charger has a slight led light to tell you if it's charging. My dad was looking at both and couldn't justify the extra $500. The power covers are out in the US to give extra battery but they are $200 USD no AUD price or Aus release date yet.

I have the surface pro 2 but if I was doing it over again I would get this + power cover. If you don't need mobility this is a no brainer.

      • The charger for Surface Pro also has the charging LED..

      • As the owner of a Surface pro the stand for me inst such a big deal. The biggest issue by far is the battery life on the Surface pro 1 is rubbish….I am amazed this device was sold with such poor battery life. If the price between it and the Surface pro 2 wasn't so far apart Id get the pro2, for the money if you can put up with the bad battery life the pro1 is good.

      • some of the newer surface pro 2 got slightly faster cpu speed
battery time of surface pro 2 is nearly double the SP1.
SP2 support Displayport 1.2 Daisy Chain Monitors (the only new tech that I wish my SP1 has)

        Any other difference?

  • Keep trying JB HiFi for price match on Student Deal at $539. JB in George St Parramatta did it for me about 2 weeks ago

  • Tried student price match at JB Carousel (WA) and just got a "Nup."
