  • Some reviews on Millenius from Whirlpool here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1956332

Feedback is slightly negative but some of the posts are a bit outdated (going back to 2012).

  • Apparently there will be 2 cpu versions being released, one with snapdragon & the other with cortex. I wonder which one the aus region will be getting.

Great price indeed. But im going to wait a few weeks after the release till i get mine as i want to wait & see if anybody has any issues with them & if the price would get lower.

    • Well who knows, if you buy from either of those 2 stores you could be getting a grey import

    • There has been for the last two, s3 and s4, with the US getting the crappier processor.

      • Good point, two different possible processors.

Exynos, I think you mean. The Snapdragon will probably be in the 4G variant and the Exynos in the 3G, if history is anything to judge by.

I wouldn't worry too much about the site/grey import. They're a registered Australian business. If anything does go wrong, you will always have consumer law to back you up. Even if it's grey import, because they're the importer, all issues will go back to them, so you don't need to stuff around with sending it to China/HK/wherever.

Does anyone know the usual pattern with discounts and a new Galaxy S release?
How long before the launch premium drops away and prices settle?

  • How much faster is 801 over 800? Is it a generational leap?

    • Is it a generational leap?

Nope, not even close. All the important bits are exactly the same; it still has Krait 400 and Adreno 330 - everything's just clocked slightly higher (and there's still a clock speed difference between some versions of the 801 - namely the Z2 version and GS5 version. Who knows why). Apparently it has some small improvements regarding image processing and faster memory support, but I doubt you'd notice the difference terribly much outside of benchmarks.

The 805 (which is what everyone was expecting this year) is a more significant upgrade - whether it's huge or a 'generational leap' depends on how you want to look at things. It'll have a faster LTE modem (don't know if networks in Aus are fast enough to saturate our current ones, though), improve on the 801's image processing, have a (supposedly) more efficient Krait 450 and a (supposedly) 40% faster Adreno 420. Qualcomm has been saying that the 805 was designed with 4K resolution in mind, so there's that.

      • I'm a bit disappointed. Apple's upgrades are pretty big each year in terms of speed.

I think 4k for 805 is marketing speak. The display itself isn't capable of 4K, so what is it going to be good for? Even 805 doesn't sound like a big jump over 800. They went from 600 (GS4, One M7, XpZ) to 800 which at 200 units at least sounds like a significant jump. Going from 800 to 801 or 805 sounds like either a failure on Qualcomm's part in naming it, or just not that big a leap.

This new GS5 phone is quite expensive for what appears on paper an incremental upgrade. It's more expensive than last year's model I'm quite sure and tbh there's not much exciting about it.

I might skip the S5. It doesn't seem that much of an improvement of the S4.

    • Well its sorta waterproof - thats quite good

      • S4 active was water proof also.

    • Same. I was all hyped up for S4, but waited for sales, expecting it to drop as quick as S3 did but it never happened. I wanted to buy it for $400 or under. I don't think we've ever reached that price. By the time I gave up waiting the S5 was close, so I thought, hey I've waited this long, may as well skip it and go S5 instead. But the phone was incredibly disappointing.

With S4, they increased the screen by 0.3" yet didn't increase the size of the phone. In fact they slightly shrunk it. The magic was in reducing the bezel. With S5, they increased the screen by 0.1" but had to increase the phone size by more than that (bigger bezel). Lame. And after all the complaints about cheap plastic casing, and then rumors they would switch to metallic casing, they went with plastic again.

Paying $808 for a grey import phone comes with 12 months warranty is CRAZY!

You better off wait for Dicksmith's upcoming 13% off site wide sales.

    • Will Dick set an upper limit on the discount %?

      • They might. In the past 10 days, they had 10%, 11% and 12% sitewide sales.
