How do they now if you have/had a family member in the armed services? It's not like they give family members a defence force card.

    • maybe you bring in their card? would suck if you needed to use it. at cerberus you arent allowed to walk around the base without a card showing

      • -1

        works at night =D
and if you get caught just say "I forgot" works all the time.

also it doesn't say in description how family member would be able to use if member is not there with them.
        Hope they don't need card.

          there is a secret handshake.

Interesting, it says its open to former ADF and their families. My grandfather was former ADF so how to I prove that I'm "family" if current families get a card? :-)

    • +1

Actually they do. There is a special family/spouse defence force card that families get for entering base etc.

  • Excludes iTunes?

  • It's also 10% for staff members (including Liquorland, Target etc), worth adding in

  • Weird discount. Never seen career specific discounting before

    • +11

It's pretty common to see military discounts in the USA. I'm kinda pleased to see Coles offering one.

    • +2

This isn't the first time Coles have done it. They had a similar thing a few years ago.

    • Now they are in to tattslotto too.

    • +1

Truth ain't well received round these waters brother.

Coles is a PR whore that doesn't give 2 rats about our farmers or Australia in general and it sickens me when I see cheap PR stunts like this.

sadly none of the sheeple can actually see it.. let alone admit to it..

this is nothing more than jumping on the bandwagon in the hope to gain a cash grab.

      • +1

And if it happens to help a family in need and/or deserving along the way… Good on them!
And how's this for another cash grab… Don't know how they sleep at night!

        • -3

helping "diggers" while screwing over the farmers (who are often direct descendants of the same people)? just to gain a better market share?

nah sorry. you have missed the point.

        • sorry my points a little vague i guess….. and at this time of nite my explanation probably fails to have enough substance for some.

          heres a little light reading

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldier_settlement_%28Australia…

theres loads more for you to learn if you wish…. or just downvote me.

        • probably NSFW. dont click here

        • +1

I only downvote stupidity, not personal opinions!!!
I'll have to read it later. This company doesn't want us advancing our minds and has Wiki blocked!!!

    • Send 'us' off to fight, 'we' are fighting them?
Very liberal there from your computer chair soapbox.

Only Australian armed forces? I think most people will have a family member who was in the armed forces at some time if you go back far enough.

    • +2

i feel discriminated against because my family isn't in the war

      • +8

How about you feel thankful and happy then.

        • thanks gagootzz i feel better

      • Armed forces are not all about war.
The majority of their work is humanitarian.
Before you people go spruiking off at the mouth you would be well advised to get some facts first.
It's embarrassing just how dumb this country is becoming.

    • I think most people will have a family member who was in the armed forces at some time if you go back far enough.

      Yep…

      • You're related to Mad Max!?

  • Just ask the tin rattlers to go in and do your shopping for you.

    What's next?

10% off for CEO's and their families?

  • I wonder if it's going to be like the Krispy Kremes discount where you had to be in uniform to get the discount.

    • +1

Maybe I could just rock up in my paintball fatigues.

  • +5

I think this is a great idea! OzBargainers are just mad that they aren't offered the deal.

    • +4

      Then join Defence!
      80 days for Recruit training.

      • +3

        Service guarantees bargains!
Would you like to know more?

        • I see what you did there…

    • -4

OzBargainers are just mad that they aren't offered the deal.

If OzBargainers can't take up this deal, why post it ?

      • +7

        Why not??
A lot of members would be current serving members and many more would be ex-servicemen like myself.

        • +1

        • +2

        • True but few of my friends l couldn't handle recruit training so they quit (and they call themselves ex servicemen)

  • +3

checkout staff have been told to honour any claims since they don't want bad publicity from it

    • -2

where does it say that ?

      • "checkout staff have been told"
JV… Told means spoken or said, not written…. :-(

      • internal docs

        • +2

this is because it has nothing to do with diggers or anything else of substance. its simply a "PR grab" to try and cash in on something much bigger in the hopes it can divert peoples attention away from how much harm the company does elsewhere.

  • +1

Just says armed forces so cud be any country even al queda not necessarily australian!

  • +4

Well done Coles. There used to be a discount scheme when I was in the Army but probably nothing as universal as this. US takes it seriously but they tend to appreciate their forces/servicemen more over there.

US bases normally also have a PX Store that sells all kinds of stuff that is cheap by US standards. You have to show your ID card to get into US PX stores and they accepted my Australian Army ID. They also have a discount grocery shop on their bases as well called the 'Commissary' that their service families mostly shop at. It is meant to be cheap as well but I never managed a visit to one.

Australian Bases had shops on them run by a company called 'Frontline' but generally their prices were average for most things.

There wont be many people from foreign armed forces here that could use the discount. A few exchange people here and there, maybe some people from foreign militaries studying here on courses, not many for Coles to worry about. Probably only a big deal for places like Townsville, Palmerston (NT), Enoggera, Seymour etc where there are loads of military families that would make up a large % of the shoppers at the 1 or 2 Coles near a major base.

  • Seems very similar to the US

  • Good on you Coles!! It would be nice to be a self-righteous pacifist. Do they forget what the Japs did to Darwin. We would all like world peace, there is no doubt about it! Unfortunately this is not always possible.

  • +1

Could this be seen as discrimination? Offering the discount to one section of the community and not the rest?

Imagine if it was only offered to dentists or lawyers..

    • It probably could be deemed as discriminatory…
But who's really going to jump up say stuff the people that maintain the liberties and freedoms that our country has to offer?

    • Everyone is able to apply for FREE membership to the Defence Force. It's the Defence Force who is discriminating against people not fit/willing for service, not Coles :)

    • Why not?
It's not really any different to any other discount offer made by being part of a club, union, etc for countless other services, only difference is this one has a lot more exposure.

  • +1

All Members of the Armed Services and their families will receive a 10% discount on their groceries* by presenting a valid Department of Veteran Affairs or Defence Personnel Card at the checkout.
    Source: http://blog.coles.com.au/2014/04/09/thanking-our-diggers/

    • Coles have a photocopy of what id is acceptable. For Veterans, this includes the Repatriation Health Card, and the Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card.

  • -2

THERE ARE TOO MANY BITCHY PEOPLE ON HERE SO I HAVE EXPIRED IT

    • Why?
The discount offer is still available, all that listing it as expired will do is possibly have it overlooked by the people that can take advantage of it.

  • -1

    NOT EXPIRED
