Nexus 7 32GB 7" Tablet (2012) $149 @ Officeworks

880

The old version but still a great 7" Tablet at this price. My local officeworks only had a display model left but Jb HiFi did a price match. JB has them for $199.

Not had a tablet since the old ZTE optus thingy, sure this will be superior in every way.

For the best possible experience be sure to update the ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7

    • any recommendations? I've got my eye on the f2fs slimkat…

      • +2

for me 95% of all roms are the same - its more just the skin/UI rather than the functionality of it.

for the nexus 7 - its not absolutely mandatory to update it to a 3rd party rom yet is its still fully supported such as the stock rom being the latest 4.4.2 you can get. (there are a few custom tweaks not available with stock rom)
These 3rd party roms become much more useful when google stops support for this and there is a new android version with more functions that can be brought in with these roms.

      • Recommendation if you aren't scared to try a significant overhaul:

        http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2700212

The most stable MIUI port I've ever used.

why? does it come with a blow-wave?

just bought a used 16GB model for $123 off eBay last week, so for $149 for the 32GB brand new is awesome.

  • I shows her this but she refused.
She insists on 7.9", 7.0" is 0.9" shorter than her desired size.
Personally, I think 7.0" is a good size for me.

    • +36

Just give her an inch less during sex ;)

      • -4

This might mean the whole lot to him/her.

      • -8

Hahaha, some people on this sight are so uptight learn to have a laugh once in a while. Jeeeez

        • Some sense of humour you got, along with lack of punctuation and spelling ability.

        • -2

Where might that be? Exclude the 'haha' and 'jeez' and I think my punctuation and spelling was up to par.

          P.s. The 'she' was intended…

        • +3

I think you need to get your sight tested.

It's 'site' bro not 'sight'. Jeez

        • -1

Oh fank u Ozbargain. My dik is more den 10 inches now.

  • Is this a good deal? I'm in the market for a smaller tablet, leaving the IPad 2 at home. Would this be usable for some general browsing, light gaming, note/powerpoint/pdf reading?

    • +2

Perfect for it. I remember forking out $300 for the 16gb model when it first came out because lack of stock at the time. Still have no regrets

  • -2

Current model 2013 fhd much better. I would not bother with old one.

    • +1

2013 is much better but the 2012 still has a market, it's still fairly responsive and good quality.

      • 2012 is slow. browsing with chrome makes me want to die, laggy, screen is too small. Still, best you can get for the price.

        • +21

I'd neg your comment or at least reply saying browsing is no problemo at all on these, but seeing as your sensitive enough to want to die from your chrome experience I'll restrain myself, just this once ☺

        • I also disagree - browsing is fine on my 2012
Too many items running in background, custom rom, live wallpaper, lack of available storage or something else running your tab down?

        • -2

its just not pleasurable. i'd prefer to walk barefoot over icy cold razor blades to get my laptop then use a 7 inch nexus 2012 for web browsing. is it a phone? is it a laptop? no its just a combination of the least pleasurable aspects of both. maybe its just tablets in general that make me suicidal.
i never trust anyone at work who turns up to a meeting with a tablet and hasnt just been to the bathroom.

  • +5

Yeah the 2013 model was recently as low as $199. Its vastly superior in every respect. The original is a little sluggish now if you are used something newer, that typically the way with 2 year old tech though.

    • 32gb? I missed that.

      • Not 32gb, but that deal expired now anyhow. I'm surprised the 2013 model has held it value, google are due to bring out the 2014 model in next couple of months.

  • +1

great bit of kit this tablet is and for the price it really shows how cheap yet powerful an android device can be.

i was eyeing out the asus fonepad 7 from jb, not really needing it to be speedy but the appeal of 3g voice really is out shinning the nexus 7, also has 32gb storage plus expandable.

  • Zte is superior as its got 3g making it one of the first phabelets ever released to the public

    • And GPS…

  • +5

I remember getting this tablet from DSE for 149 a couple of years ago and I was well chuffed. However the tegra 3 is starting to lag a little. The latest shadowgun and dead trigger games are a bit beyond it.

If you do get one and notice that it lags loading web pages try updating your router firmware. It's quite finicky that way.

Argh just bought a 2013 nexus second hand.. Could have gone cheaper with this one instead :s

A great find OP. Using a 2012 to post this, still a decent device, especially with KitI Kat (gotta love Nexus updates). I use the 7" a lot. Think I will pick one up for the mother in law to replace her ebook reader.

  • +2

My current tablet is the old ZTE from Optus too.

I'm disappointed that this Nexus 7 doesn't have a camera though. Not that they're ever good quality, but it's still nice to have!

Thinking of using this for an eBook reader and a way to show my photographic portfolio. And playing music.

Should I bother with the upgrade, or just stick with my ZTE tablet? I don't use it all that much anyway…

Might have answered my own question lol

    • the front camera can be put to use if you install an app called nexus 7 camera launcher from the play store. The camera app is still there, its just that google hid it from view, for reasons best known to themselves.

    • +5

I'm disappointed that this Nexus 7 doesn't have a camera though.

Its a benefit - will stop you looking like a twat, and blocking peoples view in a crowd.

  • Great price. Low battery life is the drawback of 2012 model.

    • +1

battery life for everything except constant video playback is fine
I basically use mine like a kindle (read ebooks) and a bit of facebook and web and easily get 3-4 days but usually a week

  • +4

Personally I still think this is too high. I grabbed mine for $175 from Bing Lee well over a year ago… it's 2014 now, should be around $100-120 tops.
It's a great little tablet, I installed 4.4.2 on mine but it was laggy as, a factory reset helped with that. Since the 4.4.2 'upgrade' I think it's chewing up battery life more tho..

  • +1

I would think this is a better deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/141705
    Discuss :)

  • "Not had a tablet since the old ZTE optus thingy"

    :)

I still have my Optus zte thingy that I paid $149 for. Though it doesn't see much use now.
Very tempted by this though, only thing is I'd really prefer a 10" screen

For those in Sydney who are interested:

Went to the Clarence St Officeworks (Sydney CBD) in the morning and was told they only had one returned one left (despite saying In Stock on the website). Was advised that only Five Dock (<5) and Castle Hill (~10) stores had stock.

Went to JB (World Square) and got a price match instead. :)

  • +1

I went to my local Officeworks (in WA) on the weekend to buy a couple of these. Even thought their site says they are in stock there are non available (I had them check some other WA stores also).

I ended up going to JB Hifi and getting them to price match, they were reluctant at first but I showed them the Officeworks website which shows they are in stock and after talking with a manager they agreed.

Just an FYI for those in a similar position with stock levels at their local Officeworks.

  • Can't decide between 2012 Nexus 7 using 3G via iphone 4 hotspot, or get a 4g Note 8 for $399 from Kogan.

Or just wait for a better wifi tablet bargain… Are we likely to see some big price drops in the next few months?

  • +1

Mate got one at JBHI at this price! Price matched OW
2 year warranty JBHIFI have it!

  • HN @ QV Melb price matched.. Few left..

  • Thanks price matched Jb hifi Adelaide city store had a few im stock.

  • +1

    Am I missing something here?
Says here https://www.google.com.au/nexus/7/ it has GPS and 5mp camera

    CAMERAS
    1.2MP front facing, fixed focus
    5MP rear facing, auto focus

    SENSORS
    GPS
    Gyroscope
    Accelerometer
    Compass
    Ambient Light

add: Dont worry about that, its an older model, like me.

  • Had Harvey Norman Aspley agree to price match this tablet and they would call back confirming that Office works had them.
Got the call and they refused to price match claiming they are only available from Melbourne and they only need to price match if at a nearest store, even though the best price guarantee says no such thing.
The screencap below clearly shows them being available at Aspley so their next weak excuse was that the officeworks store was out out of stock. Again, no mention of that on the price guarantee.

Piss poor performance from Harvey Norman

    http://tinyurl.com/mfm79g7

    • From what I've learnt in online shopping, the 'in stock' level is not always correct so it is best to call the store you wish to purchase from and go from there.

Is there any reason that you'd prefer to buy it from Harvey Norman with a price match over purchasing it from Officeworks where the deal originates from? I understand price matching as I've done it myself but not from stores in the same suburb, I would always give the original store the money as they are willing to provide the price in the first place so it's just curiosity here.

  • How good is this tablet for purpose of installing a bit torrent client and saving downloads to some kind of external media (e.g. micro USB drive like http://www.topbuy.com.au/sony-on-the-go-8gb-usb-drive-white-… )
