Asus Vivo 400 - 10.1" Intel Atom Tablet (ME400C-1B035W) - $299 @ Centrecom

40

Centrecom has the Asus VivoTab Smart ME400C for $299 again (as they did couple of months back). I picked one up Sunday. Haven't had lot of time to play around with it, but youtube and locally stored HD videos work fine.

It has a previous gen (Cloverview : 32nm / 32bit) Atom chip, but rated to have up to 9.5 hours of battery life. According to benchmarks/review it can last almost 8hours when surfing with WiFi, which IMO is pretty good for a tablet running standard Windows 8.

Overview:

  • Microsoft Windows 8 32Bit
  • 10.1 (16:9, 1366x768 IPS) display
  • Intel Atom Z2760 1.8 GHz (2 cores / 4 threads)
  • 2GB, LPDDR2 800 MHz RAM
  • 64 GB eMMC Flash storage (~32 GB available)
  • PowerVR SGX545 Graphics
  • Realtek HD Audio
  • 802.11 b/g/n + Bluetooth 4.0
  • 1x USB 2.0
  • 1x HDMI
  • Combo Audio jack (Headphone + mic)
  • Micro SD card slot
  • 580g light and 9.7mm thin

As you can see its not a very high-end tablet, so you probably won't be able to replace a notebook, but at this price point, this is a far more attractive tablet for me than a similarly/higher priced Android or an iOS device.

    It has always been $299.

    • Yes its true. I've been keeping my eye on this occasionally. I can tell you they ain't movin' that stock at all AFAIK ever since baytrail came out. Been waiting for them to drop it to $199 at least…

Better off paying a little extra & get either a Asus T100, HP Omni 10, Toshiba Encore 8 or Dell Venue 8. Cost of these models varies between $320-420.

      • Asus T100 is a good tablet, but currently the lowest price on staticice is $445, not sure if the extra $150 is really worth it. The Omini 10 on the otherhand despite its' baytrail CPU doesn't last as long as the Asus ME400 for WiFi surfing according to notebookcheck. Other ones are all 8" which IMO are too small for Windows 8, at least for any type of productive work.

Guess it all depends on what you are looking for. All I wanted was a cheap ~10" tablet (sub $300 for tax purposes) which runs Windows and has a decent battery life. I don't play games, nor run any CPU intensive programs, so this to me right now seems to have the best value for money.

        • Only if you insist a new asus t100 otherwise a refurbished was $360-370

        • Also they come with a keyboard at that price

      • They will have to drop this price when t200 is out in less than a month

Black one was always $299 @ Centrecom, at least since last 1 month.

Wouldn't touch CentreCON with a barge pole, unless it was to hit them repeatedly.

Say what you like about CPL or MSY, but CentreCON are the worst liars in the industry (IMO).

This deal was ages ago , don't think this is a bargain. Bought this in February and I got to say it is pretty laggy. Some games graphics does not work Like asphalt. Windows keep saying it is not activated

    • Yeah bought this a year ago from Costco (>$300) and returned it. CPU wise, the newer Atom processors would probably be the bare minimum you want to run Win8. Love the hardware (the size, weight, feel, etc) but never warmed to Win8.

  • Oh how times change. It was only about a year ago when this was the darling bargain of the W8 tablet lot. People were pricematching at Officeworks and getting free MS Office with it from Asus.

I bought two back then. Both still running strong for office, browsing and media. Never tried playing games on it though.

  • Sorry OP, not a bargain. I got the ME400C for about $299 ages ago. Technology has gotten better, and this device just gets older.

not quite as good as the 199 at DSE back in January.

The cpu's last version, the new 3xxx is about 50% faster than it. I would prefer buy a Android tablet than this too limited hardware one.
