  • Best rice bar none.

    • Why?

      • Tried a few brands in my cooker, and this always turns out the fluffiest. Also great for sushi (if you like long grain rice sushi).

I've switched to Basmati rice for a while now after being disappointed with the quality of the other supermarket long grain rice.

        • +2

Ive found that the coles brand basmati rice is one of the best ive tried.

        • That's the one I currently have in the cupboard… Unless the Riviana one is on sale and cheaper…

    • Thanks for the feedback. Would you say its better than some of the asian brands you get at the asian grocer - like tiger or rose brand ?

      • no where near, Rose brand is one of the best but cost too much. Actually I was thinking about return the Red Ant to Coles for a refund unfortunately this one doesn't come with a Satisfaction Guarantee.

    • The one I bought tasted like Basmati, very loose. I have to mix it with Sunrice Jasmin 3:1 so they will stick.

good deal but Basmati is king in my books low GI, very fragrant and fluffy. I buy 5 KGs for 10 dollars from Costco. Excellent quality too :)

    • I buy 5 KGs for 10 dollars from Costco.

      Which brand ?

      • +1

I too would like to know that, as I buy IndiaGate Basmati 20 KG's for around 45$ at Costco.

        • +2

I have also tried many brands but I think IndiaGate is the best. Try the India Gate Classic Basmati rice if you can find them in one of the Indian grocery stores.

        • IndiaGate is the best.

That sounds like a rice substitution scam…

      • Kirkland, and I rate it too.

Bought a bag last week when it was on sale for that price.
10 kg of white rice with 1kg of black ants inside.
    I kid you not.
It wasn't a few stray ants here and there, there were thousands in the bag.
Took it back straight away and got a refund. Next day, they removed the whole pallet that was on display.

Lucky you didn't buy Cockroach Rice !

      • Or Dalek Rice!

    • Bear would say…. it's good protein

  • How much is 10kg of red ants?

    • +2

yeah wheres the Rice brand Red Ants?

  • Nothing better then a quality basmati rice from your local Indian grocer,, you can buy a top brand for around $16 for 5 kg

Tried one bag last time when it was on special, but won't touch it again. It is dry and tasteless, seems really aged stock IMHO. It’s hard to find any nice long grain jasmine rice these days. The old superb Lion brand also becomes crap since the 2008 economic struggle.

    • +2

      You should try cooking it!

i got 3 bags from their pre vious half price sale. really struggling to finish them super dry~~~never buy again, trust me!

Correct me but I think this is Thai long grain rice. When we were having the drought over in the eastern states and Sunlong switched over to Thai rice, it became really dry and lacking in fluffiness. Had to compensate by putting a lot of extra water into the rice cooker and reheated rice the next day was quite awful. Now Sunlong is back to Australian rice, the quality is much better. I haven't tried this rice but if it is like the Thai long grain from Sunlong a few years ago, it wouldn't be worth it.

    • it became really dry and lacking in fluffiness

dry you say, hmm, i wonder if it was bad enough to make you…..constipated?

  • still $22 in vic 3020 . maybe in some location only

  • Still $22 in Adelaide

This rice is very poor compared to the premium brands (as you would expect given the price.)

Find an Indian or Asian grocers and spend the extra on some India Gate Classic or similar.
This rice is not the bargain you are looking for.

    • definitely. Rose brand is the only one I use now ( although Sun long jasmine and umbrella brand is decent) although its hard to find at times… seems to sell out quicker in Asian grocers.
having said that sometimes ppl need to adjust amount water used depending on brand…(having said that some are really shit like Koala )…it seems not all Thai sourced rice is equal….

  • I believe this price ($9) was in last week's catalogue and expired midnight last night (barely 2 hrs after this was posted).

  • I bought once in Coles, taste like nothing.

  • Not my particular favourite brand of rice to work with. Quality seems to change from batch to batch.

First couple of cooks you need to work out how much water to use. Last bag I used I needed less water than the previous bag.

Must buy bulk from all over the place and then they bag it, hence the difference.

Normal tasting rice though so ok in my books based on that.

This rice is actually the worst rice I have ever eaten - I wouldnt feed this to anyone I like. Struggling to finish it. Get proper Basmati rice (like India Gate) if you are really a rice aficionado.

  • Bought this Red Ant from Coles last time .
It tastes funny -I don't like it & kids moan too.
Love the Maharaja Gate Basmati from Coles for about the same price when it's on special.
Would happily give this to the dog if I had one.

  • For those who bought Rose brand rice, what's the cheapest price ?

I usually bought golden world from KFL supermarket @Springvale, 25kg for about $35-38
