    How is this a bargain?

Make it $10pp/pn or move to forums

    • +2

Please post up a better bargain for on-snow accommodation at Mt Hotham to prove how this is not a bargain.

    Advertising. Bye Bye.

  • +2

Yeah, this is pretty standard price. Unless you mean $65 per room per night.

  • +6

this is why nobody holidays in australia anymore. you'd get heaps better snow in japan for around $40/night in similar accomodation.

australia is a rip and it's hard to enjoy a holiday when you're made to bend over every 10 seconds.

    • 100% correct

    SPAM…

Their normal price, no discount mentioned…

    • jv our trusted ombudsman is at it again

It's $135/pp on the Snowbird website so I'd say $65/pp is a bit of a discount.

are you guys kidding me? The cost of staying at hotham is insane! I'd take this deal any day if I didn't already have access to accomodation up there. Staying at the RMIT owned lodge at buller is $90 a night on weekends for non students and that doesn't even come with a blanket or sheets.

It's really not a horrible price in comparison to other places, skiing in Australia is just rediculously expensive.

Not sure if this place has had any major renovations in recent years but its not quality accommodation. Its location is supreme, but nothing else would have me stay there again. Our biggest joy of staying at the snowturkey was the free nightly 'jelly slice' for dessert.

  • +1

Never mind this place doesn't supply linen neither lol but still cheaper than anywhere else in hotham unless you stayed at diner plain which may possibly be cheaper.

WOW, bunch of ingrates. I wonder how many of the detractors actually ski. I am am member of a lodge at another Victorian ski hill and we charge $80 pn for similar sounding lodge type accomodation. Our lodge is clean and newly renovated but a little way off the runs. $65 a night is pretty cheap for a bed on the hill. Try booking yourself commercial accommodation at the snow in one of the hotels and see how you go.

Additionally, Japan/Canada/US aren't massively cheaper either as suggested. I have skied all of them in the last few years. Similar lodge type accom in Japan is cheap and the snow is better but the cost of getting there is considerably more expensive. The US and Canada don't really do lodge accomodation, you end up either having to book commercial accommodation or renting a flat off VRBO etc. Skiing is much better though so if anything it is the lift company ripping us off on lift ticket prices, not the lodge.

Something else the OP hasn't mentioned is that most lodges also have shared fridges/kitchens so that you can take your own booze and food. Anybody that has had to buy a round of drinks or buy dinner on the hill would know that this can be very expensive. The money you would save on not having to eat out every night is a massive saving all by itself.

Edit: I see you are a competitor

I am just a member of a ski lodge at a different resort (Mt Buller), I'm not the sales manager or the bookings officer, I am just a lodge member that also happens to be a tight@rse on the OzB boards. We might be an indirect competitor but if I was worried about that why would I be supporting this guy and saying his deal was worthy? I have never been to the lodge mentioned here, I don't know the OP and have absolutely no idea where the lodge in question is although I have skied at Hotham before. I have commented on here because I think there are a lot of people making comments based upon something they know nothing about. I don't think many of the people saying this is expensive have ever been members of ski lodges/clubs and have ever had to manage the accounts or understand what it costs to stay at the snow. Indeed the whole reason I am a member of a lodge in the first place is because of some cost modelling I did 10 years ago in a quest to find a way to be able to afford to take my kids to the snow in the 1st place.

I am a tightarse or I wouldnt be on OzB and I have spent ages trying to find bargains to pursue my ski addiction. If it was possible to find $10 pn backpacker beds at the snow I would have fond them long ago.

I have spoken to the treasurer of our lodge previously about the ins and outs of running our place and I reckon $65 is very cheap for a bed. I assume this is because the place sounds like it is a bit run down. If i am wrong and this is in fact some big conspiracy/scam please just point out the cheaper options. I would be happy to swallow my pride, cancel my lodge membership and save a stack of money on ski holidays if cheaper options are available.

If you think I am supporting this deal to help justify whatever it is that my lodge (which I have never mentioned by the way) charges as part of some kind of conspiracy then please just post up a better deal. Show us where that $20 a night deal is and prove that this is no bargain.

      • couple of upvotes now! If I was going to be critical of anything it is that the advertised deal ends on 28 June. I would be amazed if the snow up until 28 June is anything like that on the pictures in the advert. In fact I'd be amazed if there was good natural skiing on the hill by then. I am sure there will be some man made snow or early falls but this is a deal designed to get in some tourists/partyers or beginners and fill some beds prior to the main body of hardcore actual ski/board folks turning up for the year.

This is a backpackers should be $20 pn max

    • +2

Show me anywhere, at any Australian Ski Hill where you can stay on-snow for $20 per night. I am a member of a lodge and it costs me more than that to stay in a bunk bed in our lodge.

  • Definitely adverstising, at even 50% capacity they are making $7,500 PER NIGHT. Nice money if you can get it. The $135 claim is just inflated price tactic

    • +2

We charge more than these guys and we are one of the cheapest lodges on our hill (wont mention which one to avoid accusations of SPAM). The majority of nights during the year our lodge runs at 0% occupancy. I can almost guarantee that their lodge will be empty for about 9 months of the year but they will have to pay rates for 12. School holidays, most of August and weekends during the snow season are probably the only times the place would be full.

Have a look at comparable rates at other lodges on the same hill http://www.mthotham.com.au/plan-my-trip/accommodation/lodges… don't assume the market/price for snow accommodation at Mt Hotham is the same as Backpacker accommodation on Sydney Harbour.

      • As devilbabies above said: no wonder nobody holidays in AU anymore. For what it costs in accomodation in vic/nsw ski resorts you can get snow trip to US or Japan including airfaires. SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!

        • +2

You're (smartconsumer) obviously not a skier/boarder and are ignorant of the true cost of a US or JPN ski holiday. I've done 2 ski trips to Japan. It's worth if for the better snow conditions, but it isn't cheaper.
