Anything worth purchasing in Google Play (max $20 per purchase)?

Long story short, I have a lot of Telstra credit accumulating, which I usually spend in the Google Play Store, using the 'Bill to Telstra' payment option. This option can only be used for purchases less than $20.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I am primarily interested in apps / games, and perhaps some movies, although the HD versions often exceed the $20 purchase limit.

My most recent app purchase, which I now couldn't live without, is PLEX.

Do you use your Telstra credit to purchase content from Google Play?

If you're into reading, books are a good option. They're rarely above the $20 limit. I also buy whatever apps I have a slight interest in from the top 100 paid.

    • I don't think that I have ever paid more than $5 for a book on Google Play, which is great value for money, just doesn't bring down the balance a lot. Unfortunately don't have that much spare time for reading at the moment.

    • Are the books DRM free? Can I put them on my Kobo?

      • +1

Yeah, it has Adobe DRM. Can't quite remember if it can be transferred to your Kobo like that, but you can use calibre to get rid of it. Instructions

        • how to find the magazines and books in the storage system?

        • +1

Thank you! I was wondering where the DRM stripping part of Calibre was.
I never understood the point of DRM, it doesn't stop piracy and it discourages people buying the stuff.

It basically just gives management a hard on and the world goes on.

Bought tasker? That's one I use to lure iOS users to the dark side.

    • +2

Tasker is damn awesome. I finally installed and started used it after owning it for 6 months as I wasn't sure what to do with it, but now I use to reboot my phone whenver the network goes down (damn KitKat issue) and also perform actions with PebbleTasker.

It's nice being able to set the volume, activate profiles and toggle stuff on my device using only my wristwatch.

    • +1

I might purchase Tasker, have heard of it before, just can't think of many situations where I need automation. That would probably change once I started using the app, and realised it's full potential.

Indeed you will if you like fiddling with your phone :)

  • Just curious Mark - How does billing it to Telstra work? Does the billing apply to your credit (e.g. $500 worth of calls) or the amount you pay per month (e.g. $30 dollars per month)

    • +2

      amount you pay per month.

      • Using the example, if you're paying $30, how does your $500 credit get affected? Does the 500 get reduced by the amount spent? (Use $20 of the $30, so your $500 credit gets reduced accordingly)

… or are you saying that I still get $500 regardless if I decide to spend $20 of the $30 on the Play Store.

I actually haven't tried it myself, but read a few people say they do it on here and whirlpool

So it looks like this guy buys the $50 recharge option and gets $1000 credit($50 Recharge and $950 Cap Credit), then he gets to use that $50 recharge to buy data packs which allows him to have 3.8GB of data per month.

Hopefully someone else can assure I've giving correct info but I'm assuming it doesn't come out of the credit.

        • I'm not really wanting to waste forum space on this by making it a singular post for discussion, so let's hope someone catches the attention of this thread. Thanks for your input though, potentially we could all be wasting our credits if we aren't "spending" it.

        • or are you saying that I still get $500 regardless if I decide to spend $20 of the $30 on the Play Store.

I believe this is the case. I do it all the time, and I've never noticed my Cap Credit to reduce, even if I spend all but one cent before the month is up. I'm due for a recharge in a couple of days, so I'll test closely then. For what it's worth, I currently have $1.02 credit left, and $112.77 of Cap Credit.

        • +1

That is correct, when you recharge $50 (which I do), you get $950 Cap Credit and $50 actual recharge credit. The $50 recharge credit can be used on data packs, Google Play (purchase cannot exceed $20), and Google Play Music (subscription service).

Spending the recharge credit does not affect the cap credit.

Telstra must hate customers like me, who recharge $50, then spend the $50 in Google Play, they must not make much, if any profit.

  • I subscribe to Google Music All Access and Evernote with my credit. I wish some of the GPS apps were under $20 but they never are.

    • I have thought about giving Google's All Access music service a try, very happy with Spotify and the various apps though.

      • I used to subscribe to Spotify, but they didn't allow in-app billing to pay with Telstra credit. So as soon as Google music started up I jumped over. Someone wrote an app to transfer playlists from Spotify to Google Music, so used that to switch.

      Metroview?

        Nice! It's just under $20!

      • I'll check it out!

Put me down for always. I mainly buy books with it, but I get the occasional app as well. I don't like the idea of tying my music (albums, not specific songs), TV shows and movies to one platform, even if I do already use it extensively, so I've stayed away thus far.

I like the "credit Me2U" option - I use the credit to top up my daughters' phones - one credit does the three of us!

Use your credit to subscribe to 'mog' (music streaming like spotify) which is unmetered for Telstra users! $11.99 per month for a great service. Couldn't live without it and basically costs me nothing.

    • +1

I like that it is unmetered with Telstra, didn't like the Android app the last time that I tried it though.

  • How do you bill to your network provider?

    • +1

You must have a Telstra prepaid SIM.

Sleep as Android (Record Sleep patterns)
    Lux auto brightness
    Link Bubble Pro
GoneMad Music Player or Neutron Music Player. Huge difference over stock Google Music App.
    Tasker
    Pocket Casts (Podcasts)
    Cerebus Anti Theft

    Root Apps:
    Root Explorer
    Titanium Backup

  • Nice list, I have noticed Sleep as Android in the top paid apps list, might look into it a bit more.

Pocket Casts is an excellent app, have been using it for a while, and I was looking into Cerebus Anti Theft, though then I came across Google's Android Device Manager (Cerebus probably has more functionality).

I love Root Explorer and Titanium Backup, not currently rooted though. Might purchase them for the future.

  • I have 35 inactivated SIM cards at home can I activate and purchase shit with them. They are 30 cards

    • +1

      cool.

    • Yep, cannot see why not, might look a bit suss activating so many SIM cards though.

    Other ones to consider:
    Nexus Media Importer
    Helium (Premium)
    Camera FV-5

  • Bought digital copies of Death of Superman and The Dark Knight Returns.
