    $50-$100.
Mug me for an old iphone, a dirty lunch box and a couple of magazines? I reckon I'm safe.

    • +36

      $0 cash
      ING payWave
      Cheap Huawei smartphone
      Decoy gold
A small amount of real gold — well hidden
      (Optionally) One key

I call it the OzBargain load-out.

      • +7

You carry gold with you everywhere?

        • +54

Yes, for bartering in case of emergencies/societal collapse/war/etc.

        • +22

Can't tell if serious or not?

        • +9

          That's a statement. It doesn't need a question mark?

        • +16

          nether does that.

        • +10

          I'm Ron Burgundy?

        • -1

Never tell Batman what to do.

      • +10

Are you Dwight Shrute from The Office?

      • +4

Is this a south park reference? Where Cartman knows Kyle will keep his real gold in a different place to his decoy gold?

It's probably a different reference that south park referenced, knowing me -_-

        • Definitely a South Park reference.

  • +23

If you mugged me today, you would have been the new owner of:
A $20 note, about $12 in coins , a $40 rebel card gift card,my samsung galaxy $4, a couple of nut-free snack bars, pink hair clips, hair ties, box of tissues, a lippie, ,an unopened bottle of nurofen for kids syrup,a small first-aid kit, a pair of earrings ,wedding ring and an expired condom.
I've just chucked the condom in the bin.Not sure how much the ring and earring cost. They are both simple and unostentatious.Doubt anyone would mug me for them.

Edit: I also usually wear a watch (rrp $200 but of course I did't pay rrp) and my oroton handbag.
Edit 2:and also my 'engagement' ring.I'm not putting a value on it though and i would have kicked you where it hurts the most (assuming you're a guy) if you tried to take it from me.

    • -7

You ,my sweet, sound like an easy target…if it wasn't for that little bird who told me that your khru calls you the next Jeeja Yanin.

      • Sshhhh! ;-)

        Get a room

        • -4

          Get a room

Its weird how we always get that comment on ozbargain but never in real life.

        • n/m

        • +1

I find it odd that you guys are two of the very few people on here that use a real photo of themselves as an avatar…

Usually people that do that are trying to pick up lol

        • +3

@WT: not sure how to respond to that:-) I'm not here to pick up JJB. I did that about 12 years ago @ the Eagle bar, Bundoora. He looked like a lost puppy. I walked up to him, gave him a big hug and said "let's get out of here!" and we did.

        • +12

          anybody else vomiting uncontrollably?

        • +1

          anybody else vomiting uncontrollably?

Yeah. Me! What does "He looked like a lost puppy" even mean? Doesn't sound very flattering.

        • Bar-crossed lovers, huh?

        • -1

you're hot Jar Jar. unfortunately i already have a GF.

        • -1

          you're hot Jar Jar

          ummm thanks…i think o.O

as far the second part of your statement, good on ya,mate. But doesn't your boyfriend mind being called a GF? Not judging, just saying ;-)

        • ;-)

        • umm, she's a woman and will be my wife soon.

        • Congrats! :-)

        • If… you're… mother is you father clap your hands!

    • +1

      $12 in coins ?!

      • -4

oh man! I think you might be missing the point. It doesn't matter how much money she's carrying. Its really not worth it to mug someone who can do this

        • +3

That girl fighting … she looks uncomfortable fighting. Absolutely no force in her strokes and all partially extended.

        • +4

If i'm not mistaken the vid, is an extract from the movie 'chocolate'.I haven't seen the whole movie but she played the character of an autistic teenager in it, one who learns how to fight and defend herself from watching movies. I also remember reading that no wire or CGI was used for any of the fight scenes, which would explain why she's holding back.
She has a 3rd Dan black belt in Taekwondo and only started learning Muay Thai a couple of months before filming that movie, which could also explain why her moves are not as fluid as they could be.
I'm nowhere that good,so I take it as a compliment whenever my fighting style is compared to hers.

        • cool sound effects!

    • why the expired condom?

      • +2

coz jjb couldn't get her into a room all this time:)

      • +3

Clearly you missed the bottle of nurofen for kids. Once you have kids the sex pretty much stops for a while until you are ready for the next one.

It does get better once the sleep resumes!

        • +3

interestingly wicket1120 has plenty of time checking ozb while having kids.

        • +2

          @Zan123, isn't that a bit misogynist?

  • Less than $50. The only cash payments I normally make are the barber for a haircut and a family member for doing my washing/ironing.

  • +16

    $0

    • That's the true OzBargain spirit!

      • I agree with you $0 now a days with paypass no need for cash

        • +1

          paypass

          *ING payWave

        • I disagree, there seems to be more shops I go to nowadays that are 'cash only' … no doubt for tax avoidance purposes.

I generally have less than $100.

    • +2

I assume all those who carry no cash aren't coffee drinkers? Most cafes don't take card below $10/15 (or if they do there is a surcharge). I usually take out $40-60. Never any more than that.

      • +4

man, this is ozbargain, we brew our own coffee from free coffee machine (+$5) that we got from target

        • True! :) It's definitely one area I never skimp on myself.

    • I usually carry 50 cents for the pay phone.

      • It's been a long time since I've seen a pay phone take less than a dollar. Heck, even that was half a decade ago, it's probably $1.50 or $2 by now.

        • Still 50 cents just used one and with a coin :)

  • +3

I hardly ever know how much is in my wallet. The only time I check is when I end up in a shop that doesn't take eftpos. A quick shudder of panic before I open it up and see a $20-50 note in there. A couple of times there has been nothing, so I either go back to the ute and scrounge through the change tray or I have to walk to an ATM etc.

  • If i mugged you today, what would be your stolen goods value ?

You will get nothing, except for a quick jab in the nose, an elbow to the gut and a swift kick to your derrière.

But if you had a gun then I guess you could have my wallet not even worth $20, literally no cash, Pebble smartwatch and my crappy LG Optimus 4x.

    • My thoughts exact, except even with a gun I'd still give them a broken nose at least even if i have to lie in a puddle of my own blood after XP

But yeah… whats cash? If you mean those plastic note things… i have none.

  • +2

$0 only carry cash if I am going somewhere with no eftpos

    • +4

      same here.

With cardless cash I only carry my phone now.

      • At some stage you would be carrying cash, if you use the above feature!?

  • +1

I had $60 on me without me knowing so I went and spent it.

    Otherwise $0

    • Should have banked it.

      • Could have but I needed petrol..

  • +6

If I was a mugger, I would go for all those people saying they don't carry cash. They would be like, "hey I don't have any cash. Here have a look yourself" and they would throw their wallets at me.I would take it and run… and make lots of $99 contactless purchases with their cc and debit cards, which I would then give to the poor. I would be the modern Robin hood , the prince of thieves. Wouldn't that be grand?

well until i get caught and sent to prison.I'm too good looking for my own good. All my cell mates will want to be my boyfriend :(

    • So you think, or you know? LOL

    • +1

Joke's on you, both my cards' paypass thingies stopped working!

I should get that looked at.

      • +1

Could that be because the prince of thieves has already taken out all your money?

    • Jar Jar

Mug me in a back street etc and nobody knows who you are

Use my Paypass and 9 times out of ten there will be some video footage of you doing the transaction.

Guess you might find a new boyfriend faster than you think

    • Joke's on you, because you're likely stealing from the poor anyway. Consider the 1st percentile retaining 30% of Australia's wealth and income.

      • +2

@GateauBoeuf, I was joking.Trust me with 2 kids, an ewok , a jedi cat, a wife ,a full-time jobs, a very needy neighbour and being a dedicated ozbargainer, I really don't have the time or energy to hide in dark alleys to mug the rich. I just find it easier to donate money to charities. Hopefully some of it goes to the poor and needy. Its taxa deductible and its legal.
BTW, are you Mtian? I've heard of the expression 'caca boeuf' but not of 'gateau boeuf'.

        • +3

You sound like a good human being. So thankyou for being nice and helping out the less fortunate :) thought you should know you're appreciated.

  • Usually not more than $50, sometimes $20, sometimes close to $100 (not too often), most of my money stays in the bank,

Usually only if someone pays me back in cash, will leave it in my wallet for essentials (fuel, food)

-My wallet and cards (nothing really valuable, probably little money on my debit card,)
    A $70 android LG phone,

  • +4

If you were to mug me, about $20 cash a few loose coins, no jewellery,Tweezer, a compact mirror about 5 different lipsticks an eyeliner, 1/2kg of paper (including receipts, letters, etc.), my keys, my iphone 4s and about 20 cards ,only 1 is a credit card btw ,the rest are all discount/club/rewards cards, lol. So you would have privileged discount/sale access to Spotlight,Anaconda,EDR,Flybys,Supercheap,Bakers delight,Village,etc.Phew..! just to name a few. :)

    • +6

      1/2 kg of paper…lol

    • It seems women are more inclined to carry around reward cards then men. Personally, I hate filling my wallet with them unless I am actually going to use them and get a tangible reward.

  • Tonight, $1310, but 9.30am tomorrow I'll be at the bank depositing it all and then back to $10(5 and coins), never really carry anymore than that.. $10 is enough to buy bread rolls from the Chinese bakery with no eftpos, and parking meters.

I guess value of goods in wallet is priceless to me. A couple credit cards could rake up some $$. Maybe $20 on my myki card, I have $13 on a used village movie card too.

  • The only thing with any value that I carry are bundles of Hungry Jack's discount coupons.

Probably something quite prized by the typical mugger.

    :(

(seriously though, no cash unless I know I'm going somewhere where I need cash - then I will take some money out beforehand).

Doubt anyone would ever try and steal my handbag. I think my permanent bitchface is a good deterrent :)

  • +5

I carry $20-$80 of cash, 2 credit cards, and a used 2 year-old phone. Definitely nothing worth getting a criminal record for, or going to jail for.

If you're considering engaging in criminal behavior, mugging is about the dumbest crime imaginable. It's high risk and low reward. You want something high reward and low risk, and that means white collar crime. Look at the alleged inside traders they just caught - they made $7 million, and splurged it buying one of the places from The Block, and were only caught because they were dumb! Look at Eddie Obeid - nearly made $70 million on just one corrupt land zoning deal, and he seems to have made an awful lot of dodgy deals, and he's not even in jail yet! And these are just the particularly highest-profile ones that got caught. Imagine how many white collar crimes there are that aren't being caught. No, instead of menacing someone in a dark alleyway, you need to start your life of crime by asking: How can I abuse my job for personal profit, or get a better job that I can abuse, or who do I know with a job that can be abused?

I am of course not serious, but it's a real pet peeve of mine how ridiculously soft we are on white collar crime, when the cost to the community is massive, both in dollar terms, and in lost trust.

    • Despite all the deals in mobile phones..seems people stick to their phone for at least 2 years.

So, like, when's the next OzBargain meetup?

Can everyone who posted here wear nametags plz?

    kthnx.

  • +16

I see that the OP is aware of the new budget and is already making targets.

  • +1

We've had posts asking how to get out of fines, penalty payments, etc, that any day now I expect to see a post that goes: I'm being mugged, please give me suggestions how to talk my way out of it.

    :)

    • Don't, but seriously,

      don't

      :p

      • OK I won't mug you if you don't post asking in OzBargain. :)

    • +6

For those interested, if you ever get mugged:
      1) give them what they want and run. Trust me that high score on candy crush saga is really not worth risking your life for.
      2) if there is no way to avoid a physical confrontation :use a pre-emptive attack, that is anything that will buy you some time and slow them down e.g: kick to the shin , punch/elbow/handbag to their stomach..and then run.
3)if they are attacking you, then use your hands to protect your face/head and use your elbows, legs to kick them.Scream for help.
4)If you feel that your life is in danger, then obviously no-holds barred: eye-gouging,biting ,scratching, hitting them with whatever you can get your hands on..etc But it rarely comes to that, if you make the wise decision of running away from danger in the first place.

      • +1

What about throwing your wallet past them, then turning and running.
I don't see them chasing you, cause they now have what they want and you get a headstart, if they are going to come after you and leave the wallet there, you were pretty much stuffed in the first place imo.

        • Yep. Isn't that what I've said, give they want n run?

        • -2

*give then what they want n run?

      • +3

        @wicket1120 Terrible advice.

        Good advice:

Scream/shout for help as loudly as possible and act crazy. Seriously.

        • +6

I used to work in Dandenong. Screaming, shouting 'n acting crazy while getting mugged, is the best way to get to get shot or more likely knifed. Also, ever heard of bystander apathy? Just because u're screaming for help n there some people around, doesn' t necessarily mean that someone is going to come to yr rescue.

        • +2

Muggers typically pick the easiest target — someone who looks submissive in a secluded area. So if you make their task difficult, they will hopefully flee to pick on an easier target.

If no one knows you need help no one can help. The louder you scream the more people will hear and the more likely that one of those people won't exhibit "bystander apathy".

If you fight back, but don't manage to get away, you're at an extreme risk of a retaliatory attack.

      • I think step three is a bit redundant - if a person is attempting to steal from you and is attacking you in the process, I think it is fair to assume that your life is in danger.

        • I only resort to eye gouging when I've run out of options. But hey that's just me ;)

      • +3

Why give them your wallet and then run instead of, you know, just running? At least that's what I always do, but I'm pretty fast and they have only ever pulled melee weapons on me. If they pulled a gun I could chicken run I guess (i.e. run in zig-zags), lol.

        • +2

+1 would love to see someone actually run in zig zags away from a mugger…. especially if the mugger didn't have a weapon. lolz

        • +2

that's what I always do… and they have only ever pulled melee weapons on me.

How frequently to people pull melee weapons on you??

    • @greenpossum : how about this guy who got his wallet stolen and is looking for advice? link

      • +1

@wicket1120: I'm so prescient at times it scares me. That's not a live question though. But who knows with advances in wearable computing someday there might be live feeds of muggings in progress. Unfortunately the pollies are too well bodyguarded. :)

        • something you've said reminded me of a character from one of my favorite movies : blue naked guy.I'm trying to remember his name but I can't.I hate it when that happens.

        • The adult version of the smurfs?
