      Controller: SandForce 2281

      Danger. Danger Will Robinson.

There's a reason almost every SSD manufacturer, aside from Intel, has ditched the SandForce controllers.

Apparently, firmware updates and production tweaks have sorted out their initial stability/BSOD issues, but I honestly just don't trust those things.

This M500 costs less, performs the same, and hasn't had the checkered past that the 2281 has. Why take a chance?

    • crucial are much better as in power outages the crucial's have the ability to clear the buffer and not crash/ brick when restart.

+1 for the heads-up. After waiting a month for the Crucial prices to drop, I gave in and ordered a 480 GB a few days ago. Now that the price dropped, I just got on line to chat with Amazon, and got the difference refunded, no questions asked.

    Awesome.

    m500 480Gb is now $US219.99

Yes that's a good thing about Amazon is if the price drops any time within a week after purchase you can get a price difference refund.

You can get refund if it's been over a week as well. I got a 240GB on May 6 and got the difference refunded this morning.

        • Does this happen automatically or do you have to contact them? Great price for the SSD.

        • You have to contact them.

  • I was literally showing this to a guy today who wants to upgrade his laptop for a little more speed. I said "wait a bit and the prices will drop as they go up and down". Looks like today was the day :)

I got the M500 240GB SSD last month from Amazon when they were at $109.99 USD. In my opinion they are really fast compared to any hard disk drive. Windows 8.1 boots up in about 15 seconds on my Sata2 based PC from POST to Windows bootup.

Enough space for a Windows install, all the programs and several games depending on the size.

  • really temped. but i don't really need a SSD…
