they both have the same warranty length and im pretty sure they have the same MTBF.
from my experience with warranty - if you can't find your receipt or if the drive fails after a year, you need to deal with seagate/wd directly.
you can send seagate drives back to the australian supplier but WD requires you to send overseas. this is the first main reason i go seagate.
and secondly - the WD drives have "Preemptive Wear Leveling" that causes a bunch of activity on the drive when it's idle. even though the drives are quiet, it pissed me off because i could hear it ticking away after i'd done a bunch of transfers.

I wouldn't want to risk shipment of hard drive because any thing could happened when in transit!
Dumb thing to say. Hard drives are packaged well, and on top of that their shock rating when not spinning is up there with almost everything else. Plus, just get insurance like you do with all your other items and you won't have an issue.
If it spins up when you receive it then you're covered by standard manufacturer's warranty.
It depends on the packing and the carrier…. I still worry about it but then again I but camera gear from overseas as well.
