  • doesnt look like there's a limit. good idea to take your grandparents shopping that day :) (and enjoy the discount)

  • This is good!

I'll bring mum. She's mad about Masterchief and has printed out some recipes. We normally shop on Friday but I think we'll shop at Coles tomorrow.

    :)

    • Ahaha.
      Mastercheif.

bahahahahahahaha does she dress up in green armour?

Fantastic - running around coles, little guys screaming "The Demon is here!" and lobbing plasma grenades at people that take 12 items into the 8 items or less lanes…

  • Nice deal - will let my parents know

  • Better than the petrol deal. Win!

  • is that the heraldsun (Melb/Vic)? wonder if it is a nationwide discount? doesn't say that it isn't in the fine print. maybe someone outside Vic can confirm.

    • It's on in QLD.

      • how did you find this out ? cheers

        • I borrowed an old persons card and went shopping. They have signs when you enter the shop. They didn't care I still have 30-40 years to wait before I qualify for my own card.

The signs say you can't combine the discount with other offers. I purchased a lot of 3 for 2 offers & catalog specials and they applied the 10% discount to everything.

    • TASSIE too.

This is AGE discrimination… I thought that was now illegal in Australia?

    • i see no real difference with this and seniors being able to travel on trains for a discount, except this is a private enterprise, but many of them offer discounts for seniors anyway (chemists etc).

all in all, its a marketing gimmick

    • +2

It's positive discrimination. Section 33 of the Age Discrimination Act provides for an exemption for just this sort of thing.

      • -4

        What's positive about it…

Some rich old dude can get 10% off at Coles when a struggling family with kids can't…

        Shame on you Coles !!!

      • Yeh I love positive discrimination; it sounds so much better with the word 'positive' in there.

  • I just went shopping with my mother. Had no idea about this offer but she got 10% off her entire bill with her seniors card. She was very happy. Saved around $10. I would've bought more stuff if I'd known up front. :|

  • yeah i saw the ad today while i was at coles melb. central…nice one

  • I hate to be the thorn in everyones side here, but all you NON SENIORS out there do realise we're effectively subsidising all the oldies grocieries to the tune of 10% here.

They save 10%, coles finds a way to make an extra 15% off the rest of us.

BOOO - sorry I don't agree with this promotion.

Supermarkets have money set aside for promotions it's part of their budget.

Lets say 10 people go in and buy $100 worth of stuff each, maybe 4 (if that) will get the discount meaning that instead of coles receiving $1000 they will receive $ 960
so yes they are losing $40 in this example but they would also be receiving more customers that would have otherwise gone to Woolworths/IGA etc because of the promotion.

Also, you've got to be kidding yourself to think they would put their prices up by 15% just to cover this offer that is only lasting for 2 days. They need to stay competitive to stop from losing customers to other stores and closing down.

Keep telling yourself that Jay ;-)

In the end the poor old pensioner who saved 10% on their groceries yesterday is also the same customer who (like me) bought the 18 can slab of Coke for $14.99 ;-(

"Also, you’ve got to be kidding yourself to think they would put their prices up by 15%"….

        Do the math.

Jason is right. I heard they have a team of grunts that go around every week, raising the price on every product that will be discounted the following week. And they write the new pricing tickets in Unicorn blood.

For someone so skeptical about bargains, what are you doing on a bargin website? Coles decided to take a 10% hit on pensioners shopping for the week (EDIT - sorry, for 2 days) - what they lost in that discount they hope to make up in PR/free advertising and extra shoppers through the checkouts. Is that so hard to comprehend?

Apologies for the sarcasm, but I think some people assume too much and buy into the conspiracy theories a little too easy when these offers pop up.

Great 1st post Emma2024 and welcome to the OzBargain community.

I've added the direct link to the Coles website document in the deal description.

    Cheers,
    Jean-Luc.
